Really interesting article, on the point of "Orphan" pics surely putting an identifiable watermark on the picture would make the picture Non Orphan and offer a higher level of protection There are plenty of watermark programmes in most digital photo programmes like ADOBE or Paint Shop or even free downloadable add ons found on the net.

Does that mean that anything on like say 'Photobucket' thats not watermarked or copyrighted becomes the property of the hosting company ? Anything that I put on Photobucket is free for anyone to use , and they just have a camera ref numbers on , 'commons' I think the term is . so they can claim the as 'their ' copyrite ..... ?

If you dont want anyone to steal your photos, then dont post them on the internet. You wouldnt leave your camera on the back seat of your car with the door open would you?

This copyright "thing" gets blown up out of all proportion. People threaten with Copyright law and straight away other people panic. As long as any photo is NOT used for financial gain, then any photo can be shown for private viewing. Dont get panicky about copyright. This post is copyright to me, the thread is copyright to whoever started it, the actual forum is copyright to the founder(s) etc etc, dont worry about it. Civil courts hate dealing with copyright cases if it goes that far, they are boring and usually result from petty arguing anyway. If you dont want your photo(s), used, viewed or abused then dont let other people see them...simple ! Bill www.cwk205.com

If you're worried about theft of your photographs, most editing progammes (even the free but effective Picasa) have a text insertion function. You can simply type your own message in a variety of different fonts anywhere on the picture. Use highly transparent lettering for less obtrusive text. This would seem to be much less bother than downloading a "specialized" watermark programme to perform this task. I'm not sure about this but be aware that a watermark can probably be erased from a photo by anyone who wants to pirate it. I'd be interested to know if this is not the case i.e.if a watermark is permanent. If so,remember to keep an un-watermarked original!

I now embed copyright in EXIF data, so unless whoever uses it knows how to get rid of the EXIF (which the majority won't) then there's always proof it's mine. I don't like ruining photos with watermakrs and share photos for them to be enjoyed. I accept they might be stolen and used without my permission, but that won't stop me doing everything I can to prevent this. It's certainly not a reason to stop sharing photos .mic

After posting the earlier message in which I could not confirm a dedicated watermarking function in Picasa,I found this is contained in the "Export" options box. I would assume therefore that merely typing text over a photograph does not protect it from alteration/piracy as this can be erased the same way as removing blemishes, but watermarking is permanent. I'm still not certain about this difference as I've never had occasion to copyright my photos, but if you have Picasa try out the option for free before downloading any more programmes which might only do the same thing.
Hope this helps,Keith
