Here are a few shots taken at Squires Gate. I don't have the exact date, but my guess would be about 1962. Chilton DW1 - the number probably suggests that it had taken part in the Kidlington Air Race, and I believe it's still around: Thruxton Jackaroo, which was based at Squires Gate in those days. ...and again on the apron. The flag is the old MCA (Ministry of Civil Aviation) flag which flew at most airfields of any size. The LAC EP9 Prospector, which was built just down the road at Samlesbury. I understand this finished up in New Zealand - I wonder how it got there? DH 84 Dragon of ANT (Air Navigation & Trading), owned by the late Keith Whyham, who came to grief en route to Liverpool some years ago. The area underneath the nose is the viewing area and cafe. ...and another shot of it taxying out. Across the Pennines now to Burnaston, the former home of Derby Airways, forerunner of British Midland/bmi. The airfield is now the site of the Toyota factory. This Miles Marathon was destined for Canada, but I don't know whether it ever made it. Here's one that would struggle to make it to the scrapyard... Nearby was Wymeswold, home to Field Aviation who were what would today be called an MRO (Maintenance Repair and Overhaul) organisation. There was invariably something exotic in the hangars - there was a Venezuelan Viscount at the time of this visit. If you were really lucky, there'd be something interesting outside, too! This Ambassador (G-AMAF) had been cannibalised for spares. With grateful thanks to Beemer for digitising them.

What wonderful photos, which were very so very nearly lost forever as they are from b&w negatives of a much larger format than the now standard 35mm. Thanks to comments by Garstonboy on this forum and response by Beemer who discovered his scanner could be modified to take the large format, we now able to enjoy these near 50 year old shots of yesteryear. I'm amazed at how sharp, detailed and clear they are. I gather that there are many more to come and for one cannot wait to see what has been found.

Great photos bringing back memories of trips to all of those places. I remember seeing Shackletons at Wymeswold.

So here are some more old photos - this time from Brazil. Not the best quality, but they they were taken in September 1964, and I don't have the negatives for these, but I thought they were worth sharing. Most of them were taken in Rio, but where there is a story to tell, I've added further info. These pictures were taken at what was then called Galeao, the main airport for Rio, but shared with the military.Here we go: "] We move now to the downtown airport at Santos Dumont, home of the Air Bridge shuttle to Sao Paulo, which is also shared with the military, but on the way we pass the naval base where the Brazilian Navy's aircraft carrier, the Minas Gerais is just entering. Now Minas Gerais in Portuguese means 'general mines', which seems an odd name for a ship! Minas Gerais is one of the largest states in Brazil, and if the style of the carrier looks familiar, it was formerly HMS Vengeance. OK, so how many of you thought Saab only made military aircraft, cars and lorries? Well the Saab Scandia shows that they did produce some civil aircraft too. This one is being prepared for departure to Sao Paulo... ...and here's another one in Congonhas (Sao Paulo) ready for the return trip On the way back to the main airport, I discovered a small airport on which were these two, where they obviously specialised in looking after Lockheed 18s: A typical Latin-American scene this one, complete with palm trees. All the work is done outside, and the aircraft is surrounded by maintenance kit.

Some more to add to the mix: This was taken at Beirut in 1964. I no longer have the notes for this trip, but the Dart Herald is Royal Jordanian and the C-130 is USAF. The next three are much nearer home - Burtonwood in fact - probably about 1960 at an open day. Some idea of the enormous apron can be seen from the photos of the C-124. Why oh why did it never become the North-West regional airport? These were taken in Rotterdam. Shell must have been one the first companies to see the benefit of a corporate aircraft and their connections with Holland were evident even then. Airfields are windy places when you have to wear a hat! That's a Dan-Air DC-3 in the background. The pictures were taken circa 1962 KLM operated scheduled services to London with the Viscount. The Bristol Freighter operated the car ferry service to Southend.

So Garstonboy, you have dispensed with my services now that you have a new scanner. Can you scan the large format negatives with it, 2" x 2" were they.Regards Beemer.

Yes, bought an 8800F. ;D I can now do the whole series of negs which I have. Far too many to have asked you to do. I still have to post the ones you did for me. I'm putting them together with some other stuff, so watch this space!
