Would anybody like to advance a theory as to why a large aeroplane, such as G-NOAH, obviously with some purpose and logistics around it, would apparently plan to Liverpool with a further departure to another place, only to head of elsewhere, presumably the second place on its route.

Ron,
I think Liverpool was only going to be used for a quick fuel stop if required (splash & dash), as it was only going to be on the ground for 30 minutes. They probably had a good favourable wind across the Atlantic which meant they could continue without the fuel stop at Liverpool, onto their final destination at Luton.

It filed for Liverpool for ETOPS planning as it was on a charter flight. It can then 'divert' to its preferred destination which was out of range.

Hi Ron,
I think that Saberliner has it. It sounds like his intended destination was Luton, but was filed to Liverpool. With favorable winds, it appears that he could press on, so could have made a request for an enroute change of destination. Whatever he did, he would have to have been in compliance with CAA regulations pertaining to company operations. I am not familiar with CAA regulations but am very familiar with FAA regulations. It sounds almost like a procedure called a planned redispatch that US scheduled carriers can do on long international flights. One main difference is that for the US carriers, the flight plan is filed to the final destination, not to somewhere short of the final destination, as appears here.
