I drove past today and noticed the Lightning had gone.
Anyone know what happened to it?

"Anger as iconic BAE gateway jet is removed.""A decision to remove the iconic Lightning jet that has stood as gate guardian at BAE Samlesbury for more than 20 years has prompted anger. Employees at the site, off the A59, say Lancashire’s weather has taken it’s toll on the Lightning F53/ZF580, once the pride of Lancashire, and that it is not in a fit condition to be refurbished." www.lep.co.uk/news/local/anger-as-iconic-bae-gateway-jet-is-removed-1-5464910

Thanks Speedbird
Shame is was left to rot, if they had maintained it properly it might not have got in such a bad state

Apparently it has been taken by a model making company - who are going to use it as a splash tool to make a full scale weather proof plastic replica. Once complete it will be sited by the main gate with a full scale replica of the F35 lightning 2.
In the mean time no final decision has been made to the fate of the original lightning - though I guess they will find a good home for it.

There can be life after being displayed on a poll!! The Lightning that was displayed on a similar way at the old Ferranti site in Edinburgh was moved to Dumfries where it has been fullt restored. Here seen buring a Night Photography Session

Drove past Salmesbury yesterday
A Lightning was back in position, looks like they had only recently done this as there seemed to be a work still going on around it
It looked like it was a mock-up rather than the real thing
It is marked as XS921 and is painted in a darker colour than the usual metal finish

The Lightning that was @ Salmesbury went to Newquey to a company who make Plastic Replica Aircraft to act as a Mold. It has now been passed to the Classic Airforce Collection who will display it.
The Lightning that has re-appeared @ Salmesbury is most likely a Plastic replica, so I will endeavor to photograph it the next time I am passing
