Apparently Guernsey has followed the example of the IOM and introduced its own registration. I gather it's 2-XXXX (insert non-indecent combination of your choice) . Their website suggests that they do not register commercial aircraft, but the first aircraft out of the traps is a Ural A319. Call me confused.com!

2-ABIF is ex AP-BIF of Air Blue. Regards Beemer Aahh, right. That explains why they didn't go for anything fancy, like UAAB (Ural Airlines Air Bus) Still confused as to how it got on their register, though, when it says on their website that they don't register commercial aircraft. link

They don't register commercial aircraft that are in service. The aircraft are registered on a Private category registraion (2-, M- etc) by the bank or leasing companies to save money when they are being stored or in a lease transition.
I think there are also favourable VAT and Import Duty terms.
I presume the Ural Airbus is either destined for storage or will take up a new registration soon...

Probably being moved on. There's no VAT in Guernsey and of course it's much easier for the leasing company to recover the aircraft if it's operating (or stored) in a country where recovery would normally be be difficult if it's on a European reg.
