Up there with the great aircraft designers,on a par with RJ Mitchell and Sydney Camm, was Roy Chadwick(1893-1947).
Born in the village of Farnworth, now in the northern part of Widnes.
Chief designer at AVRO,he was responsible for both the Lancaster and the Vulcan. Even a genius can have a bad day at the office as he also designed the Tudor. One of these monstrosities killed him,he was a passenger on a disastrous test flight.
The denizens of Farnworth have erected an information board with a potted history of their village including photos of a Lanc and a Vulcan.Good for them!

Thought to myself Vulcan and 1947 - can't be right but it certainly is. The V bomber specification was issued in January 1947 and he died in August. He certainly saw some changes in aviation in his lifespan !!
