EUROPEAN AIRPORTS - A Gerry Manning Photo Thread Some more of Gerry Manning's b&w prints, these mainly of airliners active at a number of European Airports in 1967, 1970 and 1971. Naturally the Paris Air Salon features, but so do German, Swiss and Yugoslavian airports.
These photos are the original work of Gerry Manning so are his copyright. He selected these images to be enlarged and printed at A4 size in the early '90s. Forty-five years on they form a fascinating 'time capsule' of the best of what was to be seen around Europe at the time. A fantastic wallow in memory re-awakening nostalgia for those around at the time, a real flavour of times past for those that were not!
My role has been to digitise the images, crop, clean, straighten, re-contrast, sharpen, post and caption, using free programme 'Picasa'. The copyright is Gerry's - should anyone wish to copy an image (or two) then it would be polite, and expected, to contact Gerry first by PM.
Enough of the intoduction, on with the airliners, the initial batch being from France in 1967, a trip to the Paris Air Salon at Le Bourget, which clearly visited other Paris airfields, including Orly and Creil.PARIS, LE BOURGET, 3rd June 1967 N11183, a BAC-111-215AU prior to delivery for Aloha Airlines. Last operated by Okada Air as 5N-KBW from 10.91 until wfu and stored. F-BJAK SE.210 Caravelle 11R in the colours of Air Afrique to whom it was delivered as TU-TCY, then 5N-AWQ with Kabo Air and HK-3288X with Aerosucre of Colombia until crashed near Barranquilla 26.4.89. N8778 Douglas DC-8-61 prior to delivery to Eastern Airlines. Later JA8050 with Japan Air Lines then N844AX with Airbourne Express until wfu Detroit 12.99. N1037V Boeing 377 Mini Guppy, later to N940NA with NASA. F-ZJRL also as No.2/L Breguet BR.941S. To French Air Force as code 62-NB/F-RANB in 1970 and wfu 1974 56508 Douglas C-54Q transport for the USN 'Blue Angels' team as team #8. This beautiful aircraft wfu to Davis Monthan 3.68 and scrapped 12.74. 142470 a TF-9J Cougar, as team #7 of the 'Blue Angels' 141803 F-11A Tiger of the USN, as team #6 of the 'Blue Angels' CREIL, 3rd June 1967 F-BMJR (44-34313) Douglas A-26B Invader. Never gained a civilian C of A and scrapped at Creil 1967. PARIS/ORLY, 4th June 1967 F-BNRB SE.210 Caravelle 10R of UTA, only delivered new 3.67. Later to HB-ICQ of SATA and TC-ASA of Istanbul Airlines until wfu Ercan, Cyprus 11.91. F-BNKC SE.210 Caravelle III of Air Inter, also delivered new 3.67. Later to 5N-AWO with Kabo Air until wfu Lagos 1988. 7T-VAI SE.210 Caravelle 1A of Air Algerie. Damaged beyond repair landing at Algiers 23.9.73. Look closely as this is N5605, a Convair 990A Coronado leased to Air France only from 3.67 until 11.67. Later became N8150C with Ports of Call until wfu and stored at Denver 1981 prior to being broken up. Not an aircraft type you generally associate with having been operated by Air France. G-ARPC HS.121 Trident 1c in the then current BEA scheme. DBR by cabin fire at Heathrow 28.12.75. LZ-BEM Ilyushin IL-18V of Bulgarian Air Transport (TABSO). Clearly the original negative badly finger marked, which shows despte cleaning up the image. N9701F Fairchild C-82A Packet (formerly 45-57814) operated in Europe by TWA for transporting jet engines and spares. Certainly a 'wow' factor find. No.116/F-ZACE SE.210 Caravelle III of the French Air Force. Eventually retired and placed on display at Montelimar 2.98. Worth examining the background for a Douglas DC-4, Super Constellation and the 'double-decker' Deux Points. What a selection of aircraft on a single apron, even for 1967. 4X-FDX/098 Boeing 377 Stratocruiser of the Israeli Air Force. Another sighting with a 'wow' factor, even at the time. Aircraft SOC 4.75. Another print from a marked negative, this one has cleaned up reasonably well, although a little 'grainy' as it is already blown-up from just a section of the negative.

Once again a big thank you to Brian for scanning and loading these pictures, I hope those viewing them will enjoy a bit of nostalgia. For those who like to pick up on small details the Israeli Air Force Stratocruiser was at Orly on early Sunday evening June 4th 1967, the 6-Day War started less than 12 hours later, it was unlikely to be back home before the start of the conflict, I wonder what cargo it was collecting? Just a 'bump-up' to announce that this is a further thread of period photos that has been restored to the forum following Photobucket's unilateral action last June. For the record the thread 'hit' counter stood at 3,430 in the period March 2015 to March 2018, and will no doubt climb further now that there is something to see once again!.

BUMP UP Just a quick note that if you like looking at 60s airliners around various European airfields, then this thread which has been without images for the past 2 years or so is now fully viewable again. Gerry Manning's excellent images are well worth a scroll through again. For the record this thread had clocked-up a substantial 5,620 'hits' (visits) since first posted in March 2015, despite twice being denuded of visible images by image hosts changing their rules.
