Some tips I have found dealing with aircraft photos .
Camera.
If you use photoshop or lightroom to adjust your photos, try shooting in RAW format.
It will pay dividends shooting in raw but it will place limitations on your camera in continuous shooting mode.
Shooting at higher magnifications amplifies mirror box bounce, keeping steady is hard enough @ 300mm or more but you cannot do much about whats going on in camera.
My choice was the Pentax K-5, its superb and super smooth @ 6fps in raw.
My Nikon D7100 is not in the same league for silent shooting in continuous high mode, also sometimes I will lose shots as the buffer cannot catch up.
If you are thinking of buying a new slr camera, try it out in high speed mode at a shop first take a card and a lens, make a few panning shots in high speed raw mode and make sure you are happy before committing the cash.
Uploading to Flickr.
Lots of people use flickr to upload/embed images to NWAN website.
Flickr is great 1000gb storage for free and its easy to embed your photos but there are a few hidden tricks that you can use.
Resize your photo in 3:2 ratio to 1280 pix wide, this is more than enough 1600 pix tops if you have a particularly good shot.
Most computer displays cannot handle more than this anyway..unless the viewer has a 27" mac.. so extra image definition just takes longer to process.
Now the important bit.
Save your 1280 pix wide/1600pix wide image as a .png file extension.
Not .jpg
Even if your camera cannot shoot in raw or you dont prefer to shoot in raw and have a jpeg file to handle there is a better way IMHO.
Uploading to flickr straight off the bat will degrade your jpeg photo as Flickr further compresses your image using their in house jpeg processing...Double Trouble !
Flickrs jpeg compression engine adds further unwanted artifacts and noise.
If you have a full size jpg, before uploading to flickr..open it in paint (MS windows), resize it, and save it is .png
There are some downsides with .png,
1. The filesize is bigger as there is less photo trashing compression going on. A typical 1280pix wide shot is 3mb size in .png format or 500kb in jpeg format.
2. A word of caution, resize first before converting to .png otherwise your computer will have a massive job on its hands trying to convert todays 16mp + images !
3. The exif data will not be available in .png
But the benefits are a much more detailed photo that can be viewed on normal displays.
Upload the .png to flickr
Share in the normal way and embed /post @1024 pixels wide for NWAN forums.
Try this out with a pair of uploads of the same shot, you will see that the .png will look better.
The aim of the game is to try to preserve every bit of detail from your camera and be able to post images that are of decent quality and a reasonable size for fellow users to view and websites to handle.
Flickr Tricks
Q : So what if I want to display a photo on NWAN forums (perhaps one of my duffers) using flickr hosting but I do not want the photo to show a link to the flickr site or my photostream, how do I do that ?
A: Like this,
Get the bb code link to the photo in the normal way, it will look like this for 1024pix...
We need to copy the hidden away image address in red only
Then we can embed it in the site using some text and symbols which act as webpage commands. These are all you need.
Now make a string of text using the format below.
So in this case it would be like this
And it shows on the website like this @1024 pix,
Yippee look no flickr link, or crazy flickr txt promo !
Can only be done as jpeg though
Tip
Effectively a user can set up another flickr account using a second email address and use this method to post on NWAN if they dont want to become part of the flickr community at large (join groups, follow members etc). Plus they get 1000gb of storage for free..better than any cloud backup currently available by a country mile.
Try clicking on the photo below, its hosted on flickr, but it opens @1024pix on a blank white padding/background not opening directly to flickr site.
Google Hosting and Tricks.
Google have changed image hosting since withdrawing Picasa, there are some alternative ways and some tricks to show photos using google hosting like clickable thumbnails, and retain the all important .png format that zoom to full size when you click on it like this.
You can make the thumbnail as big as you like, this is @ 200pixels wide zooming to 1280pix full size.
These are quite hard to do as google change the coding game constantly,This method saves a lot of space on webpages though.. I will try to explain how to do this in another post.
Hope this helps someone.
Mike
