Excellent news and long overdue. It will certainly help increase the amount of traffic from the Chester area and North Wales area into Liverpool.

....and it will avoid paying the charges to cross the new bridge when it is completed.

Hopefully the chosen operator will run services along the North Wales coast and provide the direct service to Liverpool that many Liverpudlians in the area have wanted for years. Direct services to Shrewsbury would also be welcome. The current need to change at Chester is a brake on development of rail services to Merseyside. LJLA will also benefit if proper publicity accompanies the rail link opening. Personally I would like to see Merseyrail as the operator with modern diesel multiple units as the power units.

I will certainly use it, as I live near Frodsham, and agree I'd like Meresyrail to run it, in fact I'd like to see them expand further anyway. What I would love to see is a proper rail link to Liverpool Airport, I think it would make a massive difference to attracting more passengers.

A rail link is one of the very best investments for an airport. Nevertheless, the opportunity for Liverpool was lost many years ago. There was a close proximity of railway to the old airport but passenger volumes were far too small. Forward thinkers might have protected a route through the old airport to the new one. As far as I can see that option is firmly off the table. Never say never, but I just cannot see the pax volume to justify the investment required to circumnavigate everything that separates the new airport from the rail tracks.

Ron's right. There were even earlier " Forward Thinkers" who neutered our rail network and blindly sold of as much of the former routes as quickly as poss.We are starting to regret it now as road traffic builds up and up.The usual short term thinking. Ron,as I understand it all disused rail lines( apart, possibly, from Departmentals) in France remain the property of the State in perpetuity

Last Sunday and Next Sunday work is taking place on the junction at Frodsham onto the Halton Curve. The project seems to be coming along nicely.

Great news and long overdue. I remember going to a meeting in Frodsham (when I was living in the area some years ago), but it seems to have taken forever to get this project under way. Better late than never, though!
Liverpool has always had close connections to North Wales, far more so than the other large city to the east, and it will be good for the Merseyside area to renew these. The shops in Liverpool 1 will be rubbing their hands, because the Welsh used to love shopping in Liverpool.

This is true. When I was a kid I used to spend the summer with my grandparents not too far from Chirk. (Crossville 119 from Lyme Cross to the Pier Head - Ferry - Train from Woodside to Chirk - then a long walk along the canal bank over the viaduct of the Ceiriog Valley, which I thought was scary, so high up and a broken fence in places There was always at least two shopping trips to Liverpool an a "Charabanc" for shopping. I hated it and did everything I could to stay in the country riding a bike around, exploring and fishing. The alternative to the train from Woodside was Crossville No 1 to Chester, then a walk across town, usually a run, to get the Crossville to Wrexham. Then pick up the Crossville going to Oswestry and get off at Chirk Bank. The last bit was a walk up a long steep hill, across the canal and then down a lane to my Grandparents' house. (Yes people walked a lot in those days. With luggage too.)

When I was young Thursday was always known as Welsh Day in Liverpool. Yes it was and Owen Owen (a few on here may remember them ) was packed to the doors, along with TJ Hughes, Lewis's and Littlewoods. I went to school in the city centre and we would have to walk to Church Street to get the bus and you would hear a lot of Welsh being spoken.
