just wondering in the age of cutbacks and austerity ? what is the significant value of woodvale as a military establishment ? as it seems to be a low used utility , and escaped the cut backs is it still funded by the mod ?

Hello, it was touted for decommission at one point but it eventually escaped the cull due to being the only RAF presence base in the North West and relocating UAS Manchester and Liverpool, would have been an issue. I think it's here to stay for a while.

Thankfully it is here to stay and is also the home of 611 RAF Regiment (Reserves). The government is committed to expanding our reserve forces and 611 was formed as part of this expansion.
Woodvale is also an important basic training airfield being the home of 10 AEF, LUAS, MASUAS, 631 VGS and the local Aircadet wing HQ.
RAF Woodvale is unique in that it is one of the few RAF Airfields that has not changed in Runway or major Building layout since WW2.
A superb Airfield , a happy place where Military and Civilian GA coexist well and with much mutual respect.
Long may it continue !

I drove past a couple of times on Sat 19 August with nothing noted, not even any of the UAS machines.
Talking of ghost stations has anyone heard this before? Noted on the Flypast Forum
Woodvale airfield just north of Liverpool is also home to an apparently well known ghost often seen in full flying gear. A popular story is that he once cadged a ride in a small aircraft only to disappear in mid-flight.

Flew from there many times when I was in the CCF at school, but I never heard that story. Many WWII airfields have a resident ghost, it seems.
