I pay £20 a year car tax and the majority of cars these days are low tax. I would rather pay that extra bit more than have to worry about a toll. But from April 2017 all cars except zero emissions will pay at least £140. Interested to know how much road tax would have to rise to have all river crossing etc toll free. I guess it would be only a pound or two.

I don't even think it would be as much as a pound. Its a good suggestion to be incorporated within road tax. There are only 5 major toll routes that I can recall (3 x Mersey Crossing, Dartford bridge/tunnel and Humber crossing). In recent years the Clyde bridge has become free (I can't recall if the Clyde tunnel has always been free or not) and the severn crossings. The Conwy tunnel was supposed to be tolled when built but due to local opposition it never materialised. There are numerous small/private toll roads, some of which are only pennies to cross (The nearest I can think of is near thelwall). If the will was there, these charges could easily be incorporated (more fairly) within the road tax.

I have mentioned this before to MPs etc.
Get HMRC to convert the car tax for an average family car into an additional petrol tax. In my case it would add around 2p per litre.
This way everyone pays i.e. the normal car driver, the lorry driver et al. It is also something the deads heads who drive without tax and insurance cannot avoid either.
Also the big car owners are penalised too as they will use more petrol so will pay more by the hidden tax. The foreign drivers who dnter the U.K. will also contribute to the Excheqer as they can't avoid it either.
It will also save on the money payed out for the collection of car tax that we find currently.

This thread was moved to this position on request from members as it impacted on customers getting to and from the airport and there could be an un-interrupted discussion on the subject. Regards Beemer (Administrator)

There is an article in todays echo (online) from Weaver Vale MP Mike Amesbury concerned about people travelling to Liverpool airport being caught out and being fined (as per previously raised on this thread). Highways England and Mersey Gateway have stated the signage on the M56 and M6 to follow 'Liverpool airport' will not include any mention of tolls. To make matters worse (if I am reading this correctly) they are actually taking down these signs! If this is not a money making racket at the expense of Liverpool Airport I would be surprised. Highways agency also stated that theres an obvious way to avoid the tolls by using the M6/M62 route. From North Wales this would add around 25/30 minutes outside of rush hour and many miles to the journey. I don't think anywhere else in the Country would put up with these lame excuses.

So that works out at around £5.30 (gallon of petrol) v. £2 for the bridge.
That's s no brainier even before the time saved.

Having tried out the new bridge today, I believe it is going to make a massive difference to many people’s journey times. We drove from Ditton to M56/Jn12 AND BACK in just 12 minutes this afternoon. It may be different for my commute to work on Monday, but I still expect to save in the region of 30 - 40 minutes on the round trip. That’s 2 1/2 hours of my life each week I get back by not sitting in traffic.

And there you have it. Toll or no toll is an argument in itself, but as an individual do you feel the toll is worth it for you?

I am not sure if it has been mentioned but you can pay online for a single crossing in advance up to 24h without registering.

I cross Runcorn Bridge to go to work nearly every day, and I have to say I thin the new bridge is fantastic, so much faster.

Interesting that another Forum is suggesting MAN will introduce drop off charges from next April...
