Just watched part of first episode of Planespotting live on BBC4.
While at East Midlands Airport they mentioned the annual cargo throughput there. An amazing 374,000 tonnes, thanks to the mail, parcels and general cargo. Probably throw in some car parts as well. What a sad indictment on the pathetic Liverpool figures. All about LOCATION,LOCATION,LOCATION. Throw in a runway extension and a well laid out apron. It was bigger than Liverpools back in the 60/70's,when Liverpool was busier than EMA. End of another of my rants.

Well I think you answered the issue yourself - Given the circumstances Liverpool operates in I think they do a very creditable job looking at the totality of passengers and now with the success of Wynne aviation it shows that with the right people on board things can change for the better - Not necessarily to magnitude you allude to - but East midlands was clearly selected for good reason by those cargo operators so you cant complain just because Liverpool didn't get the business and like passenger hubs no doubt the links built up have enhanced the amount of cargo they move.

Dereks I think they won a lot of business from Stansted. Probably offered better service. Liverpool has two buildings to blight it, from previous operations. The, now, non-aviation related, mail building is obstructing expansion due to its location, and the TNT building which never operated as an airside development.

Why didn't the TNT building operate as airside? TNT formerly operated a nightly service through LPL of course.

Why didn't the TNT building operate as airside? TNT formerly operated a nightly service through LPL of course. I stand corrected, but it never lived up to its 2007 expectations. More and larger aircraft than a BAE146 were hoped for. Like the Royal Mail building later,it's 56 bays dealt more with road transport.

You may be correct, I was wondering why it wasn't airside assuming it wasn't! It seems such a waste of a facility given its location. I'm pretty sure that the Royal Mail building was purchased about 2 years ago but nothing obvious has since emerged.
