MALAGA AIRPORT SATURDAY 10th August 2019 2045-2130 just prior to sunset to near dark A late evening airport run, for a one hour delayed EasyJet from Liverpool. Nothing exceptional seen. However the Danish Islander and Icelandic Dash 8, both parked on the military apron and a departing Iberia Regional CRJ-1000 with a Maltese registration are worthy of note. Just one larger biz jet on the north apron - an all white Challenger 850 (I think) and a corporate Airbus A.318 departed as I parked. Although landing from the inland end, for convenience parked at Churriana - the Danish Islander was a reward for that decision! MALAGA AIRPORT, SUNDAY, 18th August 2019 Observations from around 1145 to 1450 Many will now know, from another running thread, why I'm doing a number of Airport runs with arriving and now departing close family. Always one to take the opportunity of a couple of hours at a runway end no matter what the reason. Shortly before I got to the inland end of the runway (so around 1210) until shortly before I left for Churriana (so around 1410) there was a fire burning with dense black smoke to not that far beyond the north east boundary, possibly beside the main river. Both the CL-415s were already out, so a helicopter appeared from the Coin (so NW) direction, collected a 'fire bucket' and started circuits collecting water from the river presumably and dumping it on the now well established fire. Just as the fire was extinguished, a CL-415 came into land - a different aircraft from the two I saw a week ago. However about 20 minutes on the ground, it then engine-ran for 10 minutes, so could have had a problem. The smoke did drift through the approach, but far enough away not to present a problem to landing flights. Lots of biz-jet activity. Only two 'bill-boards' schemes, an Air Europa Boeing 737 in 'Skyteam' colours that I seen before and an Air Baltic Airbus A.220-300 in "Latvia 100" titles and an arty version of the Latvian flag flying the full length of the fuselage.

MALAGA AIRPORT SUNDAY afternoon, 18th AUGUST 2019. AIRLINERSFirst time this year I've been with the right time/day combination to see the seasonal Delta service. Boeing 757 N723TW Air Europa ATR-72 EI-MMZ in the new blue scheme While still in the old Aer Lingus Scheme Airbus A.330-300 EI-DUZ on the daily Dublin midday flight. Baltic Air Airbus A.220 YL-CSL in 'Latvia 100' national flag celebration scheme, together with the nose inscribed as Airbus A.220-300, no longer a Canadair CS.300. Keeping to the new colours theme, Lufthansa A.321 D-AISQ in their new scheme. While in the older Iberia colours ATR-72 EC-LQV flown by Iberia Regional/Air Nostrum. OY-JZL Boeing 737-800 of Jettime of Denmark An early afternoon regular, the Turkish Airlines service to Istanbul, Boeing 737-800 TC-JHV In comparison to Boeing 737s, there are relatively few Boeing 757s about, here is TUI's G-OOBN While on the theme of Boeing 757s, here is Jet2's G-LSAD For a variation in shape, a Boeing 717 EI-EXI of Volotea KLM's Boeing 737-700 PH-BGG to contrast in size against the majority of Boeing 737s which were -800s. Having mentioned Boeing 737-800s, this one in Sky Team colours is Air Europa's EC-LPQ A move of location to the other end of the southern runway to inspect the military apron and main biz jet parking ramp - although the heat haze prevented most from being identified. As the sun moves into mid afternoon, so photos of aircraft departing become worthwhile, even if it is only a British Airways Airbus A.320 G-EUYR! Aeroflot's Boeing 737-800 VP-BRR arrival, daily this flight seems to mark the start of a quiet mid-afternoon period, so time to go. But not before a quick shot of Royal Air Maroc's ATR-72 CN-COH departing.

FIRE FIGHTERS, BIZ-JETS & RECONNAISANCEAs mentioned in the introduction to the Log for the visit, beside the airport, likely in the river course between airport and city was a wild-fire. Not too long after the first sirens were heard responding, the Trafico blue and yellow helicopter circuited the site then made a full run along the runway length before landing beside it's hangar alongside the biz-jet ramp. Some while later this Bell 412 EC-IXU passed through the approach At first the helicopter was obscured by the thick dark roiling smoke, as the smoke thinned it became more visible, and as the fire died down so the helicopter delivered the water from the fire bucket lower and lower - so more targeted at the seat of the blaze. The smoke though seems to have thrown autofocus into a tizzy as most of the shots are unusable. Cessna 550 Citation Bravo G-XJCJ EMB-550 Legacy 500 M-MDMH Falcon 2000EX CS-DFF of Netjets Gulfstream 200 Galaxy EC-KRN N50SN Dassault Falcon 50EX heading for the holding point Global N904DF with an American football helmet logo on tail. In the early afternoon the sun has moved around sufficiently to make aircraft landing on the runway behind possible, however the distance results in heat-haze shimmer. During two-runway operation, the occasional landing movement heading for the military apron is accommodated on the otherwise 'departures only' runway. Here refugee humanitarian 'spotter' Do.328 VH-PPJ completes a mission. A Canadair CL-415 landed shortly before I left, however it one I had not previously seen this season, coded 43-28/1122 - not either of the regular pair. King Air 200 G-MEDZ departing. This one I had seen a few days previously, but could then only identify it as '*-*EDZ' as the passenger door was open. A fairly horrid shimmering shot of the Icelandic Coast Guard DHC-8 Dash 8 parked by the biz-jet ramp. There is much better shot of it 10 days earlier higher up on this thread, but in the meantime TF-SIF had transited over NW UK going north. Two days later I could confirm that it was TF-SIF that had returned. Just for a bit of fun, I have been asked on a PM just how close the main morning photography point was to the departures runway. Think this might help, with my car, a taxiing Ryanair and a departing Ryanair for illustration.

For the interest of members of the forum, the primary role of the blue and yellow Trafico helicopters is monitoring road traffic and when necessary the enforcement of violations. Commonly known as Pegasus, because of the equipment they carry for speed monitoring and the use of cameras to name just two. Staffed by Guardia Civil Trafico officers and flown by a military pilot. They are deployed all over Spain. Videos and photographs are available to peruse on line illustrating their capabilities. Their distinctive colour is meant to act as a deterrent as opposed to enforcement. Guardia Civil general patrol helicopters are green and Polica Nacional blue and white. Hope of interest. Bill

Becoming a major Malaga photo thread, even more so when I add two more posts, again one mainly airliners, the other mainly biz-jets. Final posts from Malaga during August - promise! MALAGA AIRPORT - AIRLINERS, Tuesday 20th August. EC-ISN Boeing 737-800 in the older Air Europa scheme, with additional 'El Mundo' titles Only recently registered white ATR-72, EC-NCC, with Iberia Regional and Air Nostrum titles One of two 'polar bears' seen on this visit, ES-SAT Airbus A.320 of Smart Lynx, flying for TUI Belgium aparently D-AEWM Airbus A.320 of Eurowings, with additional 'Boomerang Club' titles Few aircraft turn onto the departure runway early, this is one of very few that did - my first sighting of a Maltese registered 9H-QAB Ryanair Boeing 737-800. Not my best ever shot I'll admit. LX-LGS Boeing 737-700 Luxair EI-STA Boeing 737-300 of ASL Airlines TAP/Air Portugal Express ATR-72 CS-DJF The other 'polar bear' was Avion Express 9H-AMA, operating for Norwegian - presumably covering for the lack of Boeing 737-8MAX aircraft. Something of a grand old lady of skies now, an Airbus A.310 in Air Transat's old scheme, C-GTSW I wasn't intending to include any Ryanair, Norwegian, Vueling or easyJet in this photo-thread, but on account of the 'Bordeaux' bill-board, OE-ICF has sneaked in. While photographing the departing aircraft was also watching the landing stream. I've been hoping to see this one for a while, Airbus A.321 D-AIDV resplendent in Lufthansa 'retro' colours - looking somewhat like a Boeing 707 in the 1960s. EI-DUZ Airbus A.330-302 on the daily lunch-time Dublin rotation 3rd time in 3 visits I've seen the same one though. It could be something to with only a single over-wing exit, but the Volotea Airbus A.319s (this one is EC-MTC) always look smaller than the easyJet ones. No apologies for two more of the 'retro' Airbus A.321. Even put on the wide-angle lens to capture a side-on taxi-way shot, which is quite impossible with the 100-400 zoom attached. Boeing 757 G-POWH in Titan colours, but without titles as it is flying for Jet 2 this summer. A flock of Cattle Egrets passed through - must present a bird-strike hazard, although the only larger birds I saw.

Last Malaga post for a while. BIZ-JETS & MILITARYAn early morning shot from the multistory car park prior to heat-haze building up, evidence that TF-SIF was the DHC-8 of the Icelandic Coast Guard, having only days earlier been seen over NW England northbound. BN-2T Defender OY-FHA of the Danish Air Force Home Guard 'Patrol' was made by ATC to taxi the full length of the runway to depart, rather than use an earlier intersection. Appears to be operating humanitarian refugee spotting flights, although the Do.228 and DHC-8 must cover a lot more ground (or is that water?) during a mission. Shortly after the Defender departed the EASP air Do.328 VH-PPJ appeared, landing on the departures runway to save taxi time to the biz-jet ramp. OK, OK, who has nicked the registration? Surely it is not painted in white on white! My award for the most anti-social registration placement seen goes to Global OE-IEL with a 1/10 for being so deviously hidden. Canadair CL-415T 43-34/2090 landing, along with EI-EKP Ryanair waiting to depart. The second of the water bomber pair, 43-30/1125 comes into land - the 4th different CL-415 I've seen in 10 days. T7-ASG Piaggio P/180 Avanti G-LEAC Citation 510 Mustang, along with CS-DLD Falcon 2000 and CN-CTA Challenger 300. T7-VYT Phenom 100 CS-TMI Jetstream 32 in polar bear scheme, without titles. One of two surprises on the biz-jet parking ramp. D-CMMP Phenom 300 has been featured on the LJA daily thread recently, here it is in the heat of the Costa del Sol. This was the other surprise type, arriving moments before I left, N50G a Cirrus SF.50 Vision The more frequently seen Cirrus product, N840CD a Cirrus SR.20gTS in factory scheme LX-EVM another Falcon 2000 another afternoon arrival.
