Returned from the Super Cup Final via the new airport in Istanbul(IST). What a place! Built like a giant mosque, with a ceiling height of about 70 to 100ft, filled with bright lights which reflect up from the marble flooring, it’s almost magical. You can walk for miles in there with hundreds of gates, duty free shops etc. Lots of security everywhere. Went through 3 lots of xrays and 4 passport checks, but with little delay. No wonder Turkish airlines are trying to compete with Dubai and Emirates. Loads of space everywhere. Only let down is nowhere to view the airfield until you get to your gate and then you can only see a couple of stands. With amount of security around can’t image you would be welcome around the perimeter. Flew back with Atlas Global. They say that they are “low cost”, they are, but we had free checked in baggage, a meal( although it was disgusting) though it was aimed more at the Turks on board and an even bigger surprise, 3 rows of business class seats. Plane was a A321 which was very clean and tidy, with seats you could recline and let your head touch the head rest comfortably. And with crew in bright red uniforms with a design going back to the 60’s. And it operated to schedule.

I had a long connection there on the day before the match. There is security between the upper(arrivals)level and lower(departures),but having passed through you are free to walk miles of gates uninhibited. There are many views. All four runways are west of the first terminal complex.Another giant terminal is being constructed between the two sets of parallels in use now. As all movements are west of the current terminal it is quite easy to position yourself to view both inbounds and outbounds. Each of the piers has an outside viewing deck although not all are open yet.The one I tried was actually quite useless as it was not high enough to look west at the runways, was full of smoking staff and had a dense mesh that was difficult to see through. In the north east corner of the field(it is a VERY big airport) are two rows of five grounded Turkish MAXs.Unfortunately,TK have 12. If anybody knows of a TK MAX parked anywhere but here could they let me know.I don't think their solitary MAX9 was there....they all looked like MAX8s to me but I only had pocket optics. Isn't TK MAX a shop?!

One,minor, complaint re the new IST: the airport wifi was driving me mad!! Signing in is a ball-ache....requiring the use of TWO texted pass codes. And then you get kicked off after a short time requiring different pass codes to sign back in.I presume this is all designed to get you off your phone and into the shops(of which there are very many, including a well stocked English language book shop). So if you intend to monitor FR24 for hours I suggest you buy a local Sim card.Probably a good idea anyway as mobile data costs a fortune in Turkey.

WadokiWe stayed on the ground floor departures, didn’t go upstairs. Yes it’s getting bigger by the day. Even with all the gates we were bused to the far side of the airfield to a remote stand. All ground floor departure gates are for buses. Next floor up for air bridges.

If you want to see what this airport looks like there are numerous videos on You Tube. Well worth a watch.
