Kenny invited me to go to Prestwick for the day and not having been to PIK since I went on a MAS trip back in the early 80's I jumped at it. 07:30 departure from Runcorn to Crewe and change to Glasgow train then Scotrail to Prestwick. We had to go this way due to the unreliability of Northern Rail. Unsure what the weather would be like it was big coat time and as it was, shorts would have been the order of the day as it was brilliant sunshine. It did not give us much time to spend there but we saw what we went for plus others. The Norwegian B.787's waiting for engine changes, the US Navy, RCAF and French military that was there for an exercise. Big airport with just one airline 3 or 4 times a day, Ryanair and they have a spotters lounge. Nice to see that Prestwick is still as photogenic as ever. One of my favourite airports in the UK, and happy memories of times gone by with Kenny.

Great shots Beemer, I miss going up to Prestwick
But, it can be hit and miss, I remember a couple of times when it was just me and a Ryanair 737

Thanks for that Ian. We knew in advance what was there and we missed one and gained two others. As you can see it was wall to wall sunshine but yesterday Sunday it was lashing it down. Long day but well worth it. Beemer.

In my case just me and a Pan Am DC-7 starting up - if I was lucky! (And that was even before Kenny's earlier visits there!) Looking at Beemer's picture of the large building on the other side of the airfield reminds me that there have been a few names on the front of that building...

Always used to call in at PIK when in the area, usually pi$$ing down and the occasional Air Canada DC-8, Northwest 747 or Flying Tigers DC-8 (and Bulldog G-ASAL which is obviously still going strong)

Brian's not quite correct. The following day, Sunday, it was not "lashing it down" - true it was cool, grey and low cloud, with a drizzle starting shortly after 2pm as I left. I drove down from Perth (a little over 2 hours) and when looking at Brian's log I'm surprised at the number of changes in around 24 hours during 'down-time' from the main exercise. Apparently a second French Atlantique and the two German machines had gone elsewhere for the weekend. My original intention was to drive from Perth to Inverness/Kinloss (3+ hours each way) to look at the Museums there, but as they did not reply to e-mails asking if they were still open, knowing I would certainly see aircraft at Prestwick I headed South-West, not North for the day. A worthwhile day-out and the northern museums will wait for a future visit. Hi Mr Beemer We may have been on the same MAS coach trip to the Scottish Air Show when we were treated to a hangar full of Canadian Starfighters and a Twin Pioneer. The good old days!

Looking at the pictures of the B787’s, does anyone know when they are likely to get their engines back and are operational again?

The current Wikipedia entry, with a fleet listing dated June 2019 includes all 8 B.787-8s as 'active' - which clearly they are not. The article though does refer to the engine problems encountered by Norwegian Long Haul during 2018. As it is nearly (corrected following Beemers' following post) the whole fleet of Boeing 787-8s that are stored at Prestwick with most of their Boeing 787-9s apparently are in service, one wonders if they are actually waiting for new power-plants, or onward lease to a new operator, or indeed a mix of both! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwegian_Long_Haul

Eventually getting around to posting logs and photos of my brief excursion to Scotland last week. Photos of Prestwick on the Sunday are dull due to thick grey cloud compared to those by 'Beemer' in bright sunlight the day before. Military first, then a few civilians to follow after. Merlin HM.2 ZH847:CU landing Boeing C-17A Globemaster III 77177 (07-7177) with Dover AFB blue tail band. 436th AW/512nd AW units on nose. All 3 of the stored Norwegian Boeing 787s in that area of the airfield can be see beyond. Boeing C-17A Globemaster III 70047 (97-0047) with Charleston AFB yellow tail band. 437th AW/315th AW units on nose. MDD KC-10A Extender 30076 (83-076) with Travis AFB white tail band. 60th AMW unit on nose Boeing P-8A Poseidon (B.737-800) 169325/YD, with a Canadian Lockheed CP-140 Aurora (Orion) behind Boeing P-8A Poseidon 169426/YD, with French Navy Atlantique No.28 beyond BAe. Hawk T.1 XX239/842:CU Royal Navy, arriving One of two CP-140 Aurora in the hangars, along with a Norwegian Boeing 787. The Cherokee G-BVNS behind the fence in the foreground was also seen by me at Dundee the day before - it is a Prestwick resident. Boeing P-8A Poseidon 426 departing Cobham Falcon 20 G-FRAH departing BAe.Hawk T.1 XX161 departing. Very likely this is recently out of storage, as the fin '161' is a style not used for several years, since retirement of the T.1s from RAF Valley when replaced by the T.2s. A pair of Cobham Dassault Falcon 20s shortly after arrival, G-FRAF and G-FRAS. Second Royal Navy Merlin HM.2 of the day, seen departing. A confusing to the eye image, with telephoto foreshortening of PA-24 Comanche 260 G-AZWY departing the main runway, with the big USAF transports forming the background. "K5671" (G-EHMF) Isaacs Fury in 43 Sqdn style colours. Cessna 152 II G-BTFC of the Prestwick Flying Club Boeing 737-9AS EI-DCO arriving - the only commercial movement in 3 hours. In calm conditions it used the other runway direction for landing. Unfinished BAe.ATP fuselage dumped on the airfield presumably for non-destructive RFFS use.
