Love the Miss Blackpool name on Aces High Dakota G-AKNB ........do we know the explanation for this please? Sorry I don't. I'm assuming that the aircraft had been resident for so long (non-flyer), that the name "Miss Blackpool" was a play on words for when it finally came to depart. Or alternatively (or more likely?) someone considered that she might win the annual "Miss Blackpool" beauty contest for eligible young females?

(An aircraft which needs a lot of maintenance)

Another excellent set, Acklington! Yours truly was involved in the 748 having a holiday for a while in the British Virgin Islands, replacing the DC-3s of Air BVI, run by the exotically-named Elihu Rhymer, on what was then a very short runway at Beef Island, which few of the 748's competitors could cope with. I remember the Saudi interest in the Pleasure Beach. I think this could have been developed further, but as you may recall, the standard of hotels was not great in those days and I was told that this put them off.

Fantastic memories, always loved Squires Gate, even as a meagre PPL when you checked in to pay your landing fee the person in the landings office would always call you Captain, I wish!. What a lovely airfield.

Next batch, and these have mainly a GA and helicopter theme. Quite a few personalised registrations which indicate their reason for using Blackpool. Headline acts at Blackpool theatres frequently used aircraft to fit in more venues during the season. The fiendish fairground rides on Blackpool Pleasure Beach were German designed and built. Fleetwood docks attracted shipping activity. Once again an amazing range of photos and once again the memories come flooding back. G-ARUM was owned by the National Coal Board (of all people!) for about 12 years from 1961-1984 and was an occasional visitor to Speke. I assume G-LADA was from the time when it was owned by a car dealer in Bolton, when Ladas were a familiar sight on British roads. In the background is the 'Kite Club' a bar regularly frequented by airport staff, especially when Keith Whyam couldn't be bothered to open the one in ANT Mention of the rich and famous visiting BLK reminds that me that late one cold and rainy night, there was a knock on the ops room door and a gentleman dressed as a chauffeur popped his head around the door and asked if we would mind looking after a visitor for a short while. The terminal building had long closed and we were awaiting the arrival of the truckloads of newspapers from Manchester for the Saturday night uplift to Dublin. "No, that's fine" I said. (Times were very different then). In walked Shirley Bassey, still in evening dress from her concert, clutching a huge newspaper-wrapped pile of fish and chips. Without further ado, she made herself at home in the office and I offered her a cup of tea. She happily accepted and chatted amiably while we waited for her 125 to arrive to take her back to Biggin. It is a night I shall never forget! I remember that one of the many comedians at the time remarked that the classic definition of an oxymoron was Shirley Bassey in a low-cut dress singing 'I who have nothing'. I imagine the Bell 206, G-COAL was probably owned or operated by a mining company, since at the time the photo was taken, it was registered to a company in Sheffield.

This is am amasing thread. Brilliant photos, great memories and wonderful anecdotes. I see a couple of aircraft in there that I have flown in the past. Thank you everyone for the work done and time spent in reminding us of a brilliant era.

G-ARUM was allegedly called "Snow White" because all you could fit inside it were seven dwarfs! I've looked up the dates for G-ARUM and the NCB may have sold it by the time my photos were taken, it went on to be re-registered in the UK. I've just googled the "The Kite Club" and it was demolished in the '90s. But rather like The Cavern in Liverpool the name lives on for Blues music and a band in Blackpool. The helicopter sales and maintenance outfit was run by a Mr.Wilkie, if I recall correctly, a large man with an even larger beard.
