The latest flying club at Liverpool is Lomac Aviators, formed by Paul Lodge and Jim McVey. Both the founders having been involved in aviation locally for around 35 years. Lomac Aviators was incorporated as a company on 25th February 2004 at Liverpool, initially as a brokerage for aircraft hire, sales and parts, later also offering aircraft for self-fly hire and long-term leasing. Both the founders have owned aircraft based at Liverpool before this joint venture, these falling outside the scope of this company story. The first aircraft to be registered to the company was Cherokee Warrior G-WARW, which arrived at Liverpool in March 2005 and was used by the Cheshire Air Training School until they ceased trading during 2007. Later in the 2005, the company directors jointly acquired Cherokee Arrow IV G-BRLG for their own use. During late 2008 two Tomahawks joined the Lomac fleet for onward leasing work that did not materialise, with a Cessna 150 arriving during September 2009.
Right at the end of 2010 the company entered directly into the flying training business at Liverpool. Portacabin accommodation was acquired and positioned adjacent to the GA apron at the SE corner. Services were installed, the area landscaped and security fencing erected. So by the end of January 2011, with signing erected at the entrance to the GA and outside their premises, and with CAA approval, the flying school was in business. Initial equipment being two Tomahawks and the Cherokee Warrior, although the company owners own Cherokee Arrow also acquired the ‘three bladed prop’ company logo. In February 2011 a Cessna F.172N, G-BEWR, (by co-incidence a former CATS machine) was purchased and joined the fleet. During late summer, the engine in the Cherokee Arrow was changed, enabling the aircraft to become much more widely available for training and type conversion. A little over a year later, during 2012) and the fleet increased again, with a third Tomahawk and the Cessna 150 G-BCBX overhauled. The fleet expansion has continued into 2013 with the arrival of a fourth Tomahawk in February and the purchase at auction in April of Cherokee 140 G-BCJM and Cessna F152 G-LAMS. They arrived at Liverpool with Lomac logos already applied.
For summer 2013, with 10 aircraft in the fleet this establishes Lomac as the second largest flying school and flying club at LJLA, having overtaken Liverpool Flying School (with 6) and Merseyflight (4), indeed challenges Ravenair Training (12). With Cessna 152, Cessna 172, Tomahawk, Cherokee and Cherokee Arrow aircraft in the fleet they also offer a greater variety of types than the other resident flying clubs. For summer '13 the Flying school offered ground and flight training leading to: EASA PPL, NPPL, CAA IMC Rating, EASA Night Rating, EASA PPL-SE Revalidation and R/T Exams.
Lomac Aviators have quickly established an enviable reputation, offering a wide range of activities including pilot training, self-fly hire, aircraft rental or leasing and trial lesson flights. For contact details www.lomacaviators.co.uk
