Barfluer, Where abouts did you take the photographs from? I cycled down the canal today to go get some pics and they closed the canal off at Wango lane

AC2348. The answer is on another thread on this 'Other NW Airfields and Locations' section of the forum. A thread entitled 'Aintree Grand National'. Second post down (reply #1) links to detailed instructions etc posted last year, along with comments. Direct-link: www.derbosoft.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=local&action=display&thread=9148Do say "hello" to anyone with a serious looking camera + lens - they are very likely forumites!

Found the spot at the end of barlows lane but couldn't get there until 2-30. Couldn't see much of the parked choppers other than PACO & CGGD. PIXL was overhead. Might have to try for an earlier finish today to see if i can see some before the racing starts.

The link to the description of the Barlow's lane field does state that there is no view of the the landing pad and parking area. The position is good for the landings, especially with a westerly wind. With an easterly the helicopters depart along the same path, only are a little higher.
Rayscant, if you cannot get there for the arrivals (last arrival has to shut down 15 minutes before racing or 1315 on Saturday, then would suggest you delay getting there until after racing is complete (no start-ups until 15 minutes after the end of the last race) and watch the departures. Some helicopters will return either for a second load or having refuelled somewhere while the punters are at the races. Although I've never had the audacity to try it myself, a few of the Aintree locals have found that they can walk in the pedestrian entrance unquestioned once the day's events are all over and get to the helicopter pads, but don't ask which entrance (somewhere to the west of the field).
