JJ Your picture of the Liberty ship reminds me of one that sank of Cornwall in Whitsands bay, the James Eagan Layne. Holidays as a child the top of the mast could still be seen above the water, the Scylla ex Royal navy now lays nearby. Both popular dive sites.
Brian..

Hi Brian The James Eagan Layne was in convoy BTC103 when she was sighted 12 miles of Plymouth by U 399 who put a torpedo between her holds 4and5 she was taken in tow and beached at Whitsands bay but settled on the bottom there is something planned for the 70th anniversary of the sinking in March 2015. The Jeremiah O'Brien is 1 of 2 preserved in the USA the other being the John W Brown pity we don't show the same passion to preservation. JJ

The liberty ships were American, I'd rather we preserve our own ships such as the Royal Iris and the Manxman.

Yes, your right we do let things go to easily, if we had as much money as the yanks then things might be different.

With all the mulit millionaires being made in UK and billionaire business men and women, like Branson. it would be nice one day if they saved some of these icons. I am sure the remaining members of The Beatles could have helped with the Iris or even HMS Liverpool ?
