This is the trouble with a narrow apron / taxi design-it will never suit wide bodies. Fine for current types.....hence plans for newapron/terminal over on south side-one day perhaps!! Its a shame the hangers could not have been removed or re-located! Good for GA perhaps??

Yes, there is to be some work to expand the area used by moving the wall towards the baggage reclaim belt Number One. Also discusions regarding ways to improve speed of processing - Border Control have already improved time required for each data set to be entered. Discussions held to improve communications with airlines & handling agents particularly in relation to planning of schedules and information on actual likely arrival times. Intention to smooth the flow and iron out some of current peaks and troughs.

Arrived back from MAD yesterday. Looks like work to expand the border control area is almost complete. The area has been extended to accommodate an additional two immigration desks (which will take the total to eight once they're brought into use) and I would guess that moving the wall has increased the floorspace by about 30%.
For the record the drop / security check process went very smoothly with little in the way of queues. Departures is looking pretty smart now and the lounges much less cluttered than the last time I travelled through in May. Not perfect by any means but an increasingly pleasant experience.

Just for the record, the UKBA area is as andyh says is/has been increased in size. This is only a 'fix' and its the intention to have a more permanent solution to this.
Departures is in transition to a more permanent arrangement too.

It has been said that the contracts for improvements to the toilets on both sides has been let so work should start soon. The arrivals area has come under severe criticism and we understand improvements are being planned, the sooner the better!

They should gut the entire lower levels of the hangars and use that as a new arrivals area.
Glaze the sides and have the apron buses pulling up on both sides of the hangars for maximum usage/affect.

That was the intention subject to the agreement of all the interested parties and finances permitting when the hangar was converted for the new security area on level 3, - with arrivals and border control on level 2 and an extended baggage handling area on level 1 (ground). Somebody at the Airport seems to have forgotten this in all the changes of faces over recent years.

I was talking of gutting all the hangars, future proof them, and convert it to arrivals.
