It would appear that Wizz Air UK have been granted 161 slots at Manchester for Summer 21. It's suggested that four A321 aircraft may be based.

Been talked about on several forums, nothing but a kick in the teeth for Liverpool Airport and its city. Considering they have set up a base at DSA, very disappointing. This is shortly after Jet2 announcement at BRS.

Plus EZY and RYR adding extra aircraft at MAN and EZY shrinking the base at Liverpool.

There is a small sticking point for wizz in that it asked for 168 weekly slots, and thus 7 weekly havent been granted so far. Crucially, the 7 unallocated slots are for the 4th based early wave.
But, flybe still hold 7 based worth of slots, and its unlikely all the based incumbents will use their full portfolio, so, there are plenty of chances for wizz to get those 7 slots it still needs.
Now, this is a kick in the teeth for LPL as we know it now, but, there are caveats:
-this is just a slot request. They may not use those slots. -we dont know if they are also planning this at LPL and playing the airports off each other. MAN is slot controlled, LPL is not, thus, at this time we know about the MAN side but not the LPL side. -the slots at MAN are for wizz UK. The LPL flights are Wizz Hungary, so at this time, theres thankfully no evidence this is about shifting LPL flights to MAN. Yes, its a blow if they do choose a MAN base, but at the moment, this doesnt appear to be about moving LPL flights.

Its really bad news for Liverpool Airport and the Northwest in general as Manchester continues monopolises air travel in the region. If this comes to pass, nothing good will come of it for LPL as a result, same as Easyjet then Ryanair, Manchester then wants business Liverpool grew and can offer much bigger incentives to take it away .

It’s tough, but that’s market forces for you. It’s also just a slot allocation so may never be taken up. I think it is naive to suggest the level of expansion proposed at MAN for next summer will happen, especially as COVID won’t have gone away.

Yes, its unwelcome news, but it is not the end of it, as others have written.

The days of cheap holidays and weekend breaks next summer will probably not happen.A family of 4 could be asked to spend approx £900 for reliable and acceptable PCR tests.
The rumour is that the UK government will charge £90pp for a test on arrival back in the UK just to reduce quatantine time to 7 days.

I think the dynamics will change if the vaccines are effective. Quarantine is established to reduce demand on the NHS. If hospital admissions fall because the most vulnerable have been inoculated then the fact that the virus is infecting the rest of the population at a low level becomes irrelevant. Fingers crossed.......

Yes, it will depend how long it will take to vaccinate the population and how long the vaccine lasts for. Ì think Summer 2021 will still be very challenging.

Agreed, I don’t see it as business as usual but maybe business rather more usual than this year.

Looking at the Cardiff flights, they are all to sunshine destinations - Faro, Lanzarote, Sharm el Sheik - and so on. They sound rather one-way traffic, since I cannot imagine someone from Lanzarote rushing to spend a week in Cardiff. It is, therefore, quite a different operation from Liverpool. It's also not a terribly convenient airport. I used to live in Cardiff and, then, there were no links from the city to the airport. There is a bus now which leaves from outside Cardiff Central station (or it used to, prior to the redevelopment there) and there is a station - Rhoose Cardiff International Airport or something like that. It is a fair way from the airport and there's only a train once an hour from Cardiff Central. The airport there has also struggled to attract scheduled airlines over the years but, one the Welsh Government took it over, I guess sweeteners were offered as Qatar's link to Doha started up. The lack flights to a good many destinations (at least until recently) does seem a little odd bearing in mind it is the base for the Welsh Government and a whole raft of other governmental types organisations.
