At first thoughts why does an energy/utilities investment business want to invest in an airport? Peel for several years have suggested that they need more free cash for further investment in their whole portfolio of businesses. To this end they have agreed a joint venture with Ancala by forming a new company taking over their energy business. So obviously this is were the idea of the airport has come from, when they’ve asked is there anything else we can do together. So what does an investment company with no experience in the airport sector want from their investment? Don’t be surprised if a planning app. goes to the city council for a solar farm. Airports have large acreage of grass doing very little so it would make sense to start with something they know about. Asset managers are about one thing, making a return for their investors, so there should be something happening soon as they would have had to put a plan together to get approval for the investment from their board. There will no doubt be good things happening but some things that some might not like. It depends on what sort of operator they are and the way they intend to make the level of return. Time will tell. I did here a rumour from a Speke resident that he had heard that "solar farm" was to be built alongside the new safety zone but i will beleive it when i see it!!

It wasn’t a rumour. A planning application was submitted to Halton Borough Council but has since been withdrawn (reason unknown).

This requires very careful watching. My opinion. Overall. Bad news.

This requires very careful watching. My opinion. Overall. Bad news. I have to say that I have a similar opinion, Ron. I have had numerous dealings with Peel in a professional capacity and my experience was, that as in most businesses these days, there is no room for sentiment - it's all about the money. My reading of the situation is that the 45% which has been sold to Ancala will certainly give them some 'seed capital', but I doubt very much it will be used on the airport. What concerns me most is that they have chosen to sell their holding to a company whose main interests appear to be in the renewable energy sector. Here in the area of Northamptonshire where I live, two former airfields have been turned into wind/solar farms, the former RAF Chelveston and Podington. Podington is of course the home of the Santa Pod Raceway, but it is now home to three large wind turbines and fields full of solar panels. This is no coincidence. We all know that airfields are windy places and the site of both the old and new airports are south-facing - ideal for solar panels.I should add that the wind turbines alone bring in revenue to Santa Pod in the region of £250k each per year. I would be delighted to be wrong with this and to see the money which has been acquired invested in the airport infrastructure. I know people will say that I'm being pessimistic without knowing the all the facts, or allowing time for development plans to be revealed, but my business experience, like Ron's, stretches back more than 40 years and I've seen a lot of things happen in that time. Time will tell...

"whose main interests appear to be in the renewable energy sector."
Wasn't there talk just recently for building a solar panel farm on the now fenced off area between Baileys Lane and Dungeon Lane.

At first thoughts why does an energy/utilities investment business want to invest in an airport? It classes itself as 'infrastructure investment managers'.

What is the issue with the solar farm if it happens..

What is the issue with the solar farm if it happens.. Not sure there should be any issue. At a time when airports are under increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions, they need to be inventive about how they generate their power. Solar can be a good option. It may also be that the new investor wants to diversify into new areas.

What I was thinking, alot of land around the airport, whilst we would love to see major expansion, it won't happen over night, so put the land to use... Putting 2 + 2 together it wouldn't take a rocket scientist to presume the new investment is probably aimed at renewable energy ideas on the land, but if any of that investment should it happens goes back into the airport, be it through savings on energy or profits being put back in, then it can only be a good thing... Balancing things out a bit, let's not forget also, if it wasn't for peel we probably wouldn't have an airport now...

Lets also remember aircraft use jet fuel air travel is talked about a lot due to environmental issues. If the airport can help with renewal energy that must be a good thing.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but the new setup on stands 51 52 53 is fully operational looks very nice the outside lane nearest the aircraft for for any domestic arrivals and inside lane for internationals.
so no more getting soaked looks very nice, if only they would replace those hideous grey portacabin buildings
i was in them today and you can hear the rain pattering on the roof conservatory style,

Whilst not technically airport developments, it's worth noting that direct rail services will be introduced between Lime Street and both Edinburgh and Glasgow by the end of this year. Journey times are 3 hours 20 to Glasgow and 4 hours 30 to Edinburgh. That pretty much kills off any potential Glasgow air service although the Edinburgh journey time may be viewed as excessive at present.
