Transport for London (TfL) have ordered (and in a break with tradition are paying for) 600 Wrightbus Borrismasters that will hit London streets over the next four years. 93 are due in 2013, 200 in 2014, 250 in 2015, and the remainder in 2016.
TfL decided to purchase these as it will allow greater flexibility to transfer them between operators when contracts come up for renewal. They will also benefit from savings associated with ordering on mass.

Thanks for the links Speedbird1960. Yes it's a weird design but keeps growing on you. The idea behind them is to replace the Routemaster which was ideal for the capitals streets as people could jump on and off (at their own risk) between stops. With the modern single person operated buses you can't do this and the drivers risks prosecution if they allow people to get on and off between the stops. So, no good in a traffic jam which just about sums up central London.
The thinking behind the Borrismaster is that it can be operated as either a one/two person vehicle. One person operated outside the city and two persons within. The rear door can be closed off when not required. So, more jobs for the people of London and happier (not so late for work) passengers to boot.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh the Routemaster.......memories!!!!!!! Standing on the back, waiting for the "right" speed to jump off.............leaning down with "blakeys".....anyone remember them, on your shoes, and watching a trail of sparks behind you!!!!! :-) :-) :-) :-)

i cannot find out if this was the alternative to the BorisMaster. Wow! Never knew about this one. Fantastic find. Unfortunately, it's not an alternative to Boris's design. Boris always intended the New Bus for London would be duel purpose (one/two person operated). This bus is a two man development of the Yutong ZK6116HGS which first entered service in 2008. It was specifically designed for the European market as a standard rear engined front entrance bus . As some European counties still have conductors all they have done is altered the body to place the driver in a cab of his/her own. You will note the distance between the rear end of the bus and the rear door. The Borismaster however was designed as both a rear engined and rear platformed bus. To achieve this the engine had to be mounted sideways on to accomodate the platform. A design feature that took up most of the development costs.
