This first trip to the IOM was to become the first of many, the date was July 25th 1987. Accompanied by a friend from the Avro Flying Club at Woodford we routed via Blackpool to clear Special Branch and then on to our first sea crossing adventure. Our mount was PA38-112 G-BGEL which was leased from Ravenair at Manchester and operated by the Avro Flying Club (Although the titles on the fuselage read incorrectly Avro Aero Club). Conquering hero on arrival! Brown Air Gulfstream 1. I think this operated a route to Leeds? I think this Saab 340 G-HOPP was the only one to wear Manx colours? Viscount G-BFZL iin Manx colours. Former JEA Bandit G-BGYV. A few local scenes taken on our outbound leg. Douglas Harbour. Laxey Wheel. Cheers Shaun

Interesting pictures Shaun, and taken a couple of years before I got there.
So that's the first pic of the Brown Air Gulfstream that I've seen - nice one! I'm also sorry that G-HOPP and G-BFZL had gone from the Manx fleet before I could photograph them. But I can see their 146 G-OJET lurking in the background!
The sun used to shine in those days as well! ;D
Many thanks for posting.

Nice pics avro, acklington the tail in the background is of the BAC 1.11 that Manx Airlines leased from Airways International Cymru G-WLAD. I think it was used for a while as a temp replacement for G-BFZL for the London Heathrow service and although was not very popular with the islanders as a 7AM wake up call!! ;D.

As a follow-on, I took this photo on my first visit to the IOM (1983 I think).

All this nostalgia is making me feel old !!
I used to fly to Heathrow often in those days and checked my flights log for that time; I flew on GWLAD for the first time on 19 May 1987 and the last time on 28 Oct - also flew on GBFZL in between and recall that the 111 was in permanent use - in November they used G-CBIA and G-AXOX of BIA then on 10 Dec had my first flight on the 146 G-OJET - much quieter both inside and out and seem to recall some nearby residents had to buy alarm clocks !
Nice thread Avro - cheers

I was at King William's College in the 1960s and well remember Cambrian introducing the BAC111 on the London route, though they did refrain from early morning departures. Loudest airliners we'd had up to then were British Midland's Argonauts.

Loudest airliners we'd had up to then were British Midland's Argonauts. That's interesting, because it is the first reference I have ever seen of Argonauts serving the IOM. I help run the Manx Aviation & Military Museum, and we are interested in any records of aircraft that have been to any of the Island's airfields. Unfortunately some idiot dumped all the Airport's Movement Logs from the 60's and 70's, so while we have fairly comprehensive records from 1939 to the early 1950's, there is only one surviving book which covers 1964. The 1980's onwards are comprehensive. Also, the 'Diversion Logbook' survives and records all civil movements at RAF Jurby (which was occasionally used for diversions up to 1974). There were only about 12 occasions when it was used in the 60's and 70's, but it gives a useful snapshot of the airliners that were serving the Island on those dates. So if anyone has any records that they ever feel like photocopying ......!

Acklington Derby Airways summer schedules were operated by Dakotas in the 1960s, but the Argonauts were regular TT visitors. I think I still have my spotting log from the 1960s - if I can find it, I'll let you have a transcript of the relevant bits. Regards Nick
