The reason that XV495 of 41sqn hada sharks mouth on the nose was a nose u/c collapse at Akrotiri in 1975 (I think), I was serving on 41 at the time and it arrived back just before the sqn aniversary, I think we disbanded soon after. I will look up the dates later & also post some photo's. In all I spent 14 very memorable years servicing F4's. (J's & M's)

Just looked up my logs for the mid 70's at Coningsby. XV495 arrived back from Akrotiri, Cyprus late August or early September 76 with the sharks mouth paint job & coded 1. It was at the 41sqn 60th anniversary display & as far as I can recall the sharks mouth was painted out soon after. The photo whilst having a Gnat in the background would not have been taken on MPC at Valley as no missiles are fitted also the recce pod and CBLS racks are fitted, so probably not an airshow either. The sqn disbanded on 1st April 74, so would not have been taken later than this. Here are some Phantom Photo's that I took during my time on them, I have plenty more. XV481 'F' 23sqn Mount Pleasant, Falkland Islands 2.88 XV489 'G' 23sqn Mount Pleasant, Falkland Islands 2.88 XV420 'BT' 56sqn Wattisham 24.6.89 XV472 'A' 56sqn Wattisham 24.6.89 ZE361 'P' 74sqn Mildenhall 24.5.86 ZE360 'O' 74sqn Bentwaters 16.7.89 ZE354 'R' 74sqn Wattisham 24.6.89 I hope you have enjoyed these pics, more if you want them. I have just had the time to read this thread in full and give my heartfelt thanks to those that contributed. I loved the Phantom but was sad that we had to cancel our own machines to be able to get it. It was seen as a second best, at that time, but whatever its role and whatever we might have thought it was a great machine. RT
