Hi Guys,
Do you remember the competetion to design the MAS logo? My friend Graham Smith finally won with the red, white & blue 'swirl' design. Sadly Graham is no longer around.

Thinking back to the MGAE/MAS days, I remember there were two brothers amongst our group, but just cannot remember their names. I have a clear vision of them, however, in my mind. One of the two, claimed to have some original autographs of the Beatles, (You can guess the timeframe) and he had a postbag of enoumous proportions when he offered to share them with a suitable "friend" Now, is this a fantasy, only in my head, or can anybody verify the existance of the indivduals, who they were, and where are they now? RT Hmm! Might be me and my twin (Nick). Belonged to the MGAE and MSAE etc, remember hanger 50 and the clubroom and the old valve aircraft radio, remember being there when President Kennedy got killed, use to be a young committee member called Barry (Lloyd?) and of course Phil B. Yes I remeber taking a photo of Paul Mc at the airport in his chauffered car but not the Beatles as a group. Could well be another member as well, I just seem to sort of fit the bill so to speak. Nick is still spotting around Waddington area (now retired) where he lives and of course yours truly still involved locally so to speak - anyone remember the so called ghost that supposedley use to hang round the peri-track? Cheers Dave O

Hi Brian. Yourself and Gary Nuttall where very helpful to myself when I seriously got involved in aviation around 1983. I still see yourself every now and again at LPL. What ever happened to Gary? Mark To (mis)quote someone more famous than me "Rumours of my demise are premature". Memories blur over time but I seem to recall, in additions to Brian's great summary, that I edited the last edition of Flypast, took a short break and then became the editor of North West Air News. Am sure I edited EGGP and FoLA's 09/27 at some point too. I moved away from Liverpool in the mid-nineties and hung up my binoculars after a spotting 'incident' in Belarus which involved viewing Russian Army helicopters, detention by the FSB (aka KGB) and a Dutch guy who spoke sufficient German to explain to the German-speaking FSB officers that we weren't spies. ...Let's just say that I really appreciate the phrase "Lost in Translation" :-) Still have a keen interest in aviation though - whilst I no longer write the numbers down, I'm an active glider pilot and am always helpful when any spotters peer into the hangars at Wycombe Air Park. The old editorial drive kicked in at some point too and I ended up revitalizing the gliding club's newsletter from an infrequent one page of A4 newsheet into a 16 page monthly magazine...old habits die hard!

Gary Good to see you still around I'll never forget that incident in Kobrin in 96. Still remember being escorted by a couple of Lada police cars to the police station and all that ensued. Don't think it was a coincidence that we where tracked all the way to the next stop at Brest and then given a full turnout by Belarus Customs at the border.Think the Dutch guy saved a serious political incident plus the fact that we had a fully escorted tour the previous day of Minsk Mausulische Airbase. Warsaw never looked so inviting after all that. Happy days Colin

Hi Ron,
Alan Schofield lives in Rainford near to my daughters school.
He does a lot of work for TAS Manchester, his main specialism being Ringway
I did have his e mail address but lost it when my provider closed down.
If you e-mail admin@tasmanchester.com I'm sure they would forward on your mail to him.
Good luck,
Griff

I have some correspondence from the 70's when I contributed to Flypast some aviation movements in the Wrexham area (where I had moved to from Liverpool in 1969). Dave Peel looked after the overflights section and when he moved, John Coghill took on that section. The headed paper from 1973 shows Chairman R A Scholefield Secretary K Ellis Treasurer R G C Kittle Editor "Flypast" S G Jones Publications B Workman
By 1974 some changes had taken place
Secretary now B Billington Treasurer P H Butler Editor "Flypast" K Ellis Hon Registrar J N Price
I've often wondered whether the Brian Jones involved with the society was the same Brian P Jones who wrote an article in the Childwall C E School magazine of 1961-2 (he was 4 years older than me but my first article in print was in the same magazine!) His article read as follows (could equally be at home on several of the threads on this forum)
In Liverpool we are fortunate to have an airport which is expanding rapidly. Many new air services have begun this year, and more are planned for the future. This means that new types of aircraft will be seen at Speke, and these are welcomed by spotters. Recently Euravia started a service every fortnight to Spain, using Lockheed Constellation aircraft, an unusually large type to be speen at Speke. Although air spotters are keen on large airliners we are also pleased to see small executive and pleasure types of aircraft. Providing spotters behave themselves they will find the airport staff friendly, and willing to answer all our questions. Occasionally they allow keen spotters aboard aeroplanes. This year's airshow in May worked out so well that there is going to be another next year.
Brian P. Jones. Class 4A
48 years on and at least the number of new services eventually came - but not as fast as we would have liked in the 1960's! Are there any 11 year old spotters around these days?

The answer has to be yes, but I have no recollection of a Childwall CofE School Magazine, yet alone an article about spotting. However the year, location and of use full name do place me firmly as the culprit. The formal use of middle initial due to there being two Brian Jones's in the same class - indeed thoughout school years I was known as "Beep" or "B-P" as a result of name clashes. Article a very early indication of the direction my hobby was to take me!
Thanks Rob125 for that little gem. My interest in aviation started early - and remains to this day. BPJ.
