Days I will always remember growing up at Liverpool airport, collating Flypast in room 50 and all the great friends made then. I am now married in Wolverhampton and would like to get in touch again with anyone. Hi Phil, It was an MAS trip on a Sunday morning at the time when Cosford had limited opening (something like the first Sunday in each month) and the aircraft looked more like they were stored rather than on display - don't think it actually became a museum until 79. I believe it was October 75 or 76 maybe. Despite not having collected regs since 77/78 I still have my old log books, so I'd know the exact date if I could find them!! Nice to be in touch again - I knew you'd still be a Saints supporter!! Cheers, Dave

Ho, hum, suppose I'd better add my two penny-worth. I joined the then MSAE is about 1967 as a teenager. A few near-contemporaries of mine at school were already members, such as Pete Cherry, Ray Draper and Martin Potter, and then I ran straight into Phil Duckett, who had been in my class at primary school before we headed off in different directions. After I left school I went off to work for BAC in Filton before going on to uni, and although I returned to Liverpool I never really picked up the threads of MSAE/MAS membership again, although I did stumble over George Jones and Gerry Manning from time to time. I've got quite a few photographs of trips from that era, although they're mainly of aircraft rather than people!

Good to see some names from the past coming to light. Not heard about Phil Hewitt for many years. I meet Gerry Manning again last year on a trip to Oshkosh and see some people occasionally. I was on tThe Cosford trip and it was 3rd October 76. I am still interested, spotting & photo's and still working in the aviation industry, at Shawbury maintaining Hawk's. I see a few people when they visit the storage unit, look out for me if anyone visits on the enthusiast trips.
Many good memories from the 70's at Liverpool.
Graham Taylor, probably better known as 'St H' back then.

Well, I've searched 'hi&lo' for any reference to Hangar 50, so far with no results (or did I blink?!)! How many of y'all from those days of the MGAE are out there when we were in the hallowed company of Avro Avian, G-EBZM, and the Mossie? Just curious ! Cheers, G

Hi All Seeing Chris on the bike on the balcony recalls my sister in laws wedding last year. The sweetie shop at the base of the tower is now a posh bridal suite bedroom. Enter about a floor up and descend into the sweetie shop via a curved staircase. Where we bought sweeties is now a rather large bed, where presumably a different option is available. The best bit however is that the doors open on to the balcony. I was happy telling the new bride and groom tales of our spotting days but was thrown out for some reason. It sure brought back the memories of the loudspeakers announcing the arrival of a "Cessna from....." and we all got excited when we heard an aircraft was going to arrive.
As all the posts say, happy days
Best wishes to all
Clive H (aka Nod in the old days)

Just found this website and thread. Great memories. I was a member in the early 60's down in the old hangar with Fed Fruit and EBZM. I lived in Warrington and was the "Flypast" (original version of course) correspondent for the Vulcan detachments at Burtonwood. This week have been in the loft fixing the tv aerial due to digital signal problems and found my logbook from 1962 onwards to 65 I think. Started to read it and the memories came flooding back of the balcony on the old terminal and as someone else has said the announcements of arrivals like RAF Anson from Jurby etc. (picture of TX213 in my files). Also the Starways fleet of DC3's DC4's and later the Viscounts. Black and white photos of the Aer Lingus Carvair, BKS Bristol Freighter and all the interesting stuff that arrived on Grand National Day. Anyway enough of this "All our yesterdays" stuff. Keep it coming folks. As for me I'm now retired from the oil industry and drive Cessna 150's and PA28 for fun. Flew down to Coventry last week and it was great to see the ex-Starways DC3 G-AMPY looking in fine fettle and ready to fly!

I've managed to get into the hard drive of my old and semi-defunct laptop and retrieve this scan. I didn't take the pic, but it was on some MSAE jaunt down south late 1960s and someone might recognise himself! Lincoln by William Leece, on Flickr

Re Vulcans at Burtonwood for Jake3. As you probably know the path of the M62 runs more or less along the route of the runway at Burtonwood. The dispersal pans for the Vulcans (four off) were down at the eastern end of the runway. They were positioned at an angle to the runway for the QRA getaway which we used to see demonstrated at Finningley BoB dislpays. Always seemed strange that they were pointing away from the Soviets but now I am a pilot I suppose they were facing into the prevailing westerly winds! A public road crossed the runway I guess about a third of the way along it. The crossing was manned by police (civil I think but might have been military) during the detachments. No problems crossing most of the time. No pictures sadly as they were a bit far away for the simple b & w camera I had at the time. The log book I have found shows two detachments in 1965. 4/5/65: XL387, XL427, XM570, XM572 all logged as Vulcan B2 6/7/65: XL318, XL446, XM571, XM594, all logged as Vulcan B2 camouflaged. Hope this info from an old fart helps. It scares me to realise this happened 46 years ago!!!

This has stirred up a memory. I've just looked up in my log book to find that on 5th July 1965 I was on a Bomber Command call out from Benson. I was crew on the Argosy at that time and we took men and materials to the dispersal airfields. Starting at 0630 we went to Scampton, loaded up and at 1035 flew to Burtonwood. At 1130 we took off for Scampton and departed back to Burtonwood at 1425. 1550 saw us en route to Scampton again. I aaume that we had something to eat then as we didn't leave there until 1920 to return to Burtonwood, landing there for the final time at1955. Just to give us a break we were then tasked to go to Lossiemouth with a quick turnound and off to Benson arriving at 0030 on July 6th. Quite a long day eh?
Argosy was XP 441.
