NOTES & ABBREVIATIONS
eg 27th/1115 shows the aircraft stayed overnight, departing on the date and time shown.
f&t = from and to. Where the point of origin and destination are different, both locations are named.
All times are quoted as BST ‘local’ time
G/A refers to an aircraft that did not land, performing a go-around only.
Where an aircraft operated on call-signs, this is noted by official 2 or 3-letter abbreviation. If there is no call-sign, then the aircraft operated using the registration. Where there is just one cal-sign, the same flight number was used in- and out-bound.
The source material does not name non registered airfield sites, these are covered by the blanket term ‘private site’. Nor does it identify diverted flights, or the reason for diversion, however these can usually be worked out from other sources.
Some types may not be name and mark accurate, although I have tried harder this month to look them all up!

AIRLINE NEWS
After a year of contraction and nothing positive, some good news in the past two months as the hard work being put in by Airport management to reverse the trend bears fruit.
BLUE AIR
Romanian Airline, Blue Air, who currently operate a fleet including 8 Boeing 737-400s is to commence a three times weekly service from Bucharest from 15th December 2014. Flights will operate on Monday mornings and on Wednesday and Friday early evening.
WIZZAIR
WizzAir are to add to their services from Gdansk and Warsaw from 22nd April 2015 with a mid evening departure to Riga, the Latvian capital, on Mondays and Fridays. This route was formerly operated from Liverpool by Ryanair, before transfer to Manchester.
RYANAIR
With summer ’14 schedules well established, looking forward Ryanair have announced that the three times weekly Shannon service will be moved from LJLA to Manchester from the commencement of winter schedules, end of October 2014. However, partially balancing this for summer 2015 by an increase in frequency to Bratislava and Krakow.
FLYBE
The winter programme offers the same frequency as the summer, with 18 rotations per week between the Isle of Man and LJLA. The lack of a winter Saturday evening rotation shows a lack of initiative by the Airline’s planners, as it denies islanders a match-day, day-return facility. Mind you, with the number of Sunday matches last season, maybe a Sunday morning flight is needed too!
EASYJET
With their summer '15 programme yet to be announced, nothing newsworthy at this stage.
SHORT SEASON INCLUSIVE TOUR CHARTER PROGRAMMES
It is good to have short season tours offered again from Liverpool. OSKA Travel have one week holidays to Antalya, Turkey on offer, with departures on 5th and 12th November 2014, with flights operated by Corendon Airlines Boeing 737-800.
Newmarket Holidays have a single, one week holiday on offer, to Verona, departing on 17th May, to be operated by Small Planet Airlines.
EUROPEAN FOOTBALL
With both Liverpool and Everton mounting European campaigns this winter, speculation is rife as to what might be used to transport certainly the teams and maybe supporters into Liverpool Airport. Liverpool have drawn Real Madrid (Spain), FC Basel (Switzerland) and Ludugorets (Bulgaria); while Everton have FC Lille (France), Vfl Wolfsburg (Germany) and Krasnodar (Russian Federation).
The programme of matches could produce some interesting weeks:
Tuesday 16th September LFC home to Ludogorets & Thursday 18th EFC home to Wolfsburg
Wednesday 1st October LFC away at FC Basel & Thursday 2nd EFC away against Krasnodar
Wednesday 22nd October LFC home to Real Madrid & Thursday 23rd EFC away at Lille
Tuesday 4th November LFC away at Real Madrid & Thursday 6th November EFC home to Lille
Wednesday 26th November LFC away in Sofia v Ludogorets & Thursday 27th Movember EFC away at Wolfsburg
Tuesday 9th December LFC home to FC Basel & Thursday 11th December EFC home to Krasnodar
Already Ryanair have announced an extra schedule to/from Madrid on 4th and 5th November for LFC fans. The Official tour agents for both LFC and EFC are Thomas Cook Sport. Although they proposed a trip to see Everton away at Krasnodar, this has been since cancelled, possibly due to problems getting an airline to operate in the proximity of Crimea and the Ukraine conflict, linked with proposed cost due to sheer distance and Visa expense.

AIRCRAFT USING LJLA DURING AUGUST
AIRCRAFT USING LJLA DURING AUGUST
In many of the next few sections, more detail can usually be found in the main log in the movements for the day quoted, this being just an overview summary of activity.
RESIDENT AIRCRAFT ACTIVITY AND CHANGES
A long-term resident, Boeing Stearman G-BRUJ, which has had three different owners while at Liverpool left for new owners at Halfpenny Green on Wednesday 20th. Before departure the aircraft had a few days away at Barton 28th July until 4th August.
In the opposite direction, Mooney M.20F G-BIWP which has spent long periods at Liverpool in the past, returned from Sleap (in the company of Tomahawk G-LFSN) on Monday 4th, and has not flown since.
The major LAA Rally at Sywell was attended on Saturday 30th by Cessna 165 G-BTDE (day-return) and Gemini G-AKKB (returned Sunday via Stapleford Tawney) and on Sunday 31st by Cherokee G-YAWW day-return.
Over at Helicentre there has been much activity. Robinson R.44 G-CEKA which arrived in June, was active until mid August, then left for a non-airfield destination on Thursday 21st. On the same day Robinson R.44 G-CFNF which arrived in June and left for Barton in mid July, passed through Liverpool also on 21st en route to Booker (possibly collecting a pilot to deliver Robinson R.22 G-OBIO to LJLA later in the day). The third of the June R.44 arrivals, G-CJLL was active at Liverpool throughout August. EC.120 G-OMEM was here inactive for much of the month. A short term visitor with Helicentre was all white Squirrel G-JOZI 5th into 6th with a local flight on the day of arrival. A new resident with Helicentre is Robinson R.22 G-OBIO, which arrived from Booker on Thursday 21st, however has only been active since 27th. G-OBIO, which has been used by Helicentre before, clearly replaces G-PACL which was damaged in an accident in July.
SCHEDULED SERVICE AIRCRAFT
EASYJET EZY/U2
Most notable easyJet during August was the appearance of an easySwiss A.319, HB-JZV, late afternoon of Friday 8th which had rescued stranded passengers from Lanzarote/Arrecife due to a LJLA based G-EZGE going ‘tech’ there the day before. It then positioned out to Geneva. August was not an easy month, with ‘tech’ problems affecting based aircraft on several days, usually requiring an aircraft to be positioned in to help clear a flight backlog.
A small amendment to July’s listing. G-EZGE did not leave LJLA base on 31/7, but continued into August. It was ‘tech’ for the day on 31/7 and substituted by G-EZFY for one day only. I have amended the July report to incorporate this.
Aircraft based at LJLA during August:
A.320:
G-EZUR (30/6-18th), G-EZWM (18th-28th), G-EZUC (28th-Sept)
G-EZTH (28/7-3rd), G-EZTV (3rd-15th), G-EZWC (15th-17th), G-EZUP (17th-Sept)
A319:
G-EZDH (June-1st), G-EZGD (2nd-4th), G-EZDH (4th-13th), G-EZDE (13th-Sept)
G-EZIM (13/7-10th), G-EZDV (10th-18th), G-EZAI (18th-29th), G-EZDW (29th-Sept)
G-EZGE (14/7-7th), G-EZFN (8th), G-EZGI (9th-Sept)
G-EZIO (23/7-Sept)
G-EZDE (29/7-8th), G-EZAW (8th-Sept)
With for a day, on temporary duty: G-EZWI (on 6th), HB-JZV (on 8th), G-EZIH (on 22nd)
Positioning flights (including some aircraft that did not stay at LJLA long enough to be considered based):
G-EZFY to Manchester Fri 1st at 0906 as EZY9006 having arrived from Manchester 31st July as a substitute aircraft
G-EZWI from Berlin Wed 6th at 2038 as EZY9008, operated to/from Bordeaux; then to Edinburgh early hours of Thurs 7th at 0320 as EZY9002. Required to clear backlog, due G-EZDE ‘tech’ at LJLA.
G-EZFN from Gatwick Fri 8th at 0044 as EZY9011, to replace G-EZGE ‘tech’ at Lanzarote. G-EZFN did not stay at LJLA long as a based aircraft, as it swopped with G-EZGI late evening at Palma.
HB-JZV having ‘rescued’ the stranded pax from Lanzarote, to Geneva Fri 8th at 1750 as EZY9005
G-EZIH from Luton Fri 22nd as EZY9006, operated to/from Mahon; then to Luton Fri 22nd at 1518 as EZY9007, required due G-EZAI ‘tech’ at LJLA.
So used on scheduled services through Liverpool in August: A.319s (both LJLA and Belfast based): GEZAI/EZAW/EZBO/EZBW/EZDB/EZDE/EZDH/EZDK/EZDL/EZDV/EZDW/EZDZ/EZFN/EZFO/EZGC/EZGD/EZGE/EZGI/EZIH/EZIM/EZIO/EZIR/EZIW/HB-JZV. Plus G-EZFY positioning to Manchester morning of the 1st and G-EZFH on diversion (see main log for 5th).
A.320: G-EZTH/EZTV/EZUC/EZUP/EZUR/EZWC/EZWI/EZWM.
G-EZIO wears UNICEF colours. Good, at long last, to see ‘sharlet’ fitted EasyJet aircraft based at LJLA, with G-EZWI for a day and G-EZWM based for 10 days.
RYANAIR RYR/FR
For each week in July, the early Tuesday morning Dublin rotation had been operated by a leased-in Boeing 737-400, either EI-JRD or EI-JRE. However, throughout August this flight returned to being operated by a Ryanair main-line Boeing 737-800 aircraft. In August it was the early morning Dublin rotation on a Saturday that was operated by one of two leased-in Air Explore (of Slovakia), Boeing 737-400s. The aircraft are in full Air Explore scheme and titles, although it has been only OM-CEX appearing each August weekend. Well nearly, as on Saturday 2nd main-line EI-EMK substituted. Appearances by leased-in aircraft are included in the main visitors log above. Ryanair appear to have had a very smooth operation during August, certainly there was never a requirement to draft replacement aircraft in from elsewhere, as did easyJet.
Working out the overnight based aircraft during August is confused by several aircraft returning after leaving to be based again, while others appeared from other operating bases either before or after being Liverpool based. The majority of changes were with Cork, Dublin or Shannon bases, although changes with Barcelona and Oporto aircraft appear once each in the research.
EI-EFV (16/7-1st), EI-EBS (1st-15th), EI-EFO (15th-22nd), EI-EBS (22nd-31st), EI-EFM (31st-Sept)
EI-EBK (29/7-1st), EI-ESR (1st-6th), EI-DHG (6th-10th), EI-DYP (10th-13th), EI-DLE (13th-Sept)
EI-EFO (30/7-8th), EI-EFV (8th-27th), EI-EKT (27th-29th), EI-EFO (29th-Sept)
EI-EBF (31/7-3rd), EI-DPJ (3-4th), EI-DLD (4th-10th), EI-DHH (10th), EI-EBF (10th-20th), EI-DYP (20th-Sept)
EI-DAM (31/7-4th), EI-EGC (4th-7th), EI-EVT (7th-Sept)
No less than 88 different Ryanair aircraft (out of around 300) operated scheduled services through Liverpool during August. Indeed it takes me far longer to sort Ryanair activity than it does to compile the actual LJLA visiting aircraft log! During August then we saw:
EIDAM/DAO/DAR/DHF/DHG/DHH/DHS/DHW/DLB/DLD/DLE/DLI/DLV/DLW/DLX/DPF/DPJ/DPL/DPP/DPR/DPY/DPZ/DWI/DWM/DWP/DWV/DWY/DYF/DYH/DYJ/DYP/DYS/DYT/DYW/DYY; EIEBA/EBF/EBG/EBK/EBM/EBS/EBT/EBV/EBX/EBY/EFA/EFC/EFH/EFI/EFM/EFO/EFV/EFY/EVZ/EGA/EKA/EKE/EKL/EKO/EKR/EKT/EKV/EMC/EME/EMF/EMK/EMN/EMR/ENF/ENO/ENW/ENY/EPC/EPH/ESL/ESP/ESR/ESV/ESY/EVE/EVJ/EVO/EVR/EVT/EVY/EVZ/EXF and leased-in OM-CEX.
Of interest in this list is EI-EMK which appeared twice on Saturdays, from Dublin on 2nd (0908-0954) and Pisa on 30th (1559-1645) in ‘National Express’ billboard scheme (there are to be two others, one being EI-DLJ, to look out for in this scheme). The newest aircraft in the list EI-EXF, did visit during 2013, but made its first visits of 2014 appearing from Barcelona on Friday 22nd (1618-1706), Saturday 23rd (1441-1537) and yet again on Monday 25th (1441-1547). It is this aircraft that has "U NEVR BEAT D'IRISH" painted under the belly. EI-DYT noted on the Shannon flight on Friday 29th has the addition of beach balls painted on the nose.
FLYBE BEE/BE
Scheduled IoM service continued at 3 flights per day on weekdays, one on Saturday morning, two on Sunday evening. As a general pattern the same aircraft operates the two evening flights and the morning flight the next day – but not always!
In all during August a total of 19 different aircraft were used IoM-Liverpool, without any real disruption. The aircraft were G-ECOA/ECOC/ECOD/ECOH/ECOK/ECOT, G-FLBB/FLBC/FLBE, GJECE/JECG/JECH/JECI/JECJ/JECO/JECY, G-JEDP/JEDV/JEDW. Main colour scheme variation noted was that G-ECOK, which only appeared on just the earlier evening flight on Sunday 10th, was still in Brussels Airlines livery.
WIZZAIR WZZ/W6
The thrice weekly Gdansk and twice weekly Warsaw flights brought in 13 different A.320 aircraft during August, however these were mostly older aircraft in the fleet, disappointingly not a single sharklet to be seen. Calling were: HA-LPF/LPJ/LPM/LPN/LPQ/LPR/LPT/LPX/LPZ, HA-LWA/LWB/LWE/LWT.
DIVERSIONS, INBOUND & OUTBOUND
Despite being summer a few diversions were handled during August. Early afternoon on Tuesday 5th a Thomson Boeing 737-800 and an EasyJet A.319 diverted from Manchester to Liverpool. This was due to congestion as aircraft were held while airspace was cleared for an inbound Qatar A.330, subject to a threat, was escorted down to the ground by a Typhoon. Other holding aircraft were close to a diversion decision when the airport re-opened and included an Air France A.320 aircraft F-GKXU which was in the descent for LJLA. A Monarch A.321 and a Thomas Cook Boeing 767 diverted to Birmingham.
In mid-afternoon of Monday 18th, the Chester bound Beluga diverted to Liverpool due to strong, blustery cross-winds at Hawarden, having first tried an approach from both ends of the runway there. The aircraft night stopped at LJLA. Further details of these aircraft are in the main log above.
On Tuesday 26th, Navajo G-JAJK on the regular early morning supply flight, which operates direct EMA-IoM briefly called at LJLA, this likely an operational diversion, rather than due to weather.
CHARTERS, I/Ts and FREIGHT OPERATIONS
The only general passenger charters in August were the two Lourdes pilgrimage flights that departed in July, returning on Friday 1st. This time the Titan Boeing 757 operated both inbounds more or less when scheduled.
All other charter flights were football team related, bringing in quite a variety of airlines and aircraft types. I’ll start with charters related to Everton FC’s pre-season friendlies and the start of the Premiership season. FC Oporto arrived in the UK for a short tour on a Carpatair (of Romania) Fokker 100 during the evening of Saturday 2nd, for a match at Goodison on the Saturday before moving elsewhere by coach. EFC a week later had an away game at Paderborn in Germany. They left on CityJet RJ85 EI-RJE (in Air France colours) during the morning of Friday 8th. They were due to return on the same aircraft late evening of the Saturday, but as the aircraft developed a fault after start-up, it was around midday on Sunday 10th before they got back to Liverpool, on EI-RJH (also in Air France colours). Home fixtures against London clubs brought in BM Regional EMB-145 G-RJXG on Saturday evening 23rd to take Arsenal FC home and G-RJXA arriving evening Friday 29th, departing evening of Saturday 30th carrying Chelsea in and outbound.
Liverpool FC returned from Miami, at the end of their US tournament, direct, on Tuesday 5th in the early afternoon on executive charter Boeing 767-200 ZS-DJI. A pre-season warm-up European friendly brought Borussia Dortmund to Anfield on Sunday 10th on a WDL BAe.146-200 D-AWUE, arriving in the morning, returning early evening. For the first Premiership game of the season, Southampton FC arrived evening of Saturday 16th on CityJet RJ85 EI-RJH, returning home early evening of the Sunday, after the match.
Aviation wise, not a bad start to the new 2014-15 season, and with both teams in Europe this winter, hopefully the flow of interesting aircraft will continue.
The same cannot be said for freight charters. Not a single aircraft in the visiting aircraft list can be identified as to likely have been carrying freight.
BIZ-JETS
Clearly August was never going to be a repeat of July; however 32 biz-jets passed through LJLA during August. Of these 19 were Cessna Citation 510/550/525/560, with the more notable ones being D-CAWM Sun 3rd, LX-FGB Mon 4th, OO-ATM Thu 7th, D-CJOS Mon 11th, OE-FXM Tue 12th, OE-FZD Wed 13th, PH-DRK Sat 23rd and EC-LQF on Sat 30th.
There were a variety of larger biz-jets, with Challenger 300s G-MRAP on Wed 6th, D-BIGA on 4 different occasions and 600 M-FRZN on Sun 17th. Sole Gulfstream, a Gulfstream 5 was also the sole NetJet of the month, CS-DKF on Thu 21st, with a Falcon 7X M-MNCC on Fri 22nd and an EMB Legacy G-LEGC on Sun 24th.
Lear Jets were more numerous this month with M-ABEU on Sun 3rd as ‘Ryanair One’, D-CGBR on Tue 12th and again Fri 22nd, with G-DDDJ on Sat 23rd. Which just leaves mention of Phenoms G-ITSU on Mon 4th and regular M-YTOY; along with Premiers regular G-IOMC and G-OOMC on Wed 13th.
GENERAL AVIATION and other notable visitor highlights
Not the most inspiring month. King Air 200 OO-INN and C90 D-IAVI both on Tue 19th deserve mention, as does Twin Star M-OUTH on Tues 12th and 19th. Oddly non-British singles were more interesting than the twins during August. From Germany came D-ECFZ Cessna F.172K Mon 11th- Wed 13th, Aquila D-ESGN Fri 15th-Mon 18th and D-EEMK AA-5B Tiger Wed 21st and stopped overnight. Irish single Cessnas are rare visitors, which makes EI-MCF a Cessna 172R on Fri 15th and stopped overnight worthy of mention. Finally mention of N278DB Mooney M.20R on Wed 6th and Saratoga N88NA on Sat 30th.
British twins were dominated by King Airs, with no less than 7 different aircraft calling. Rarer was an elderly Aztec G-AZYU on Sun 24th and Fri 29th. While the Capital Navajo Chieftain ‘Prestige 99' (EGL99) air ambulance service flights from the Isle of Man is a regular operation, in August using G-VIPU and G-VIPY, two other air ambulance flights brought in Air Medical Piper Cheyenne G-GMED from Tarbes (Lourdes) on Sat 9th and King Air 200 G-NIAA as ‘Causeway 999’ from Belfast Aldergrove on Wed 20th.
British singles visiting were few and far between, but varied, with Woodvale based Cessna 172 G-BCVJ on Thu 7th, Cirrus G-GCDC on Mon 18th, Beagle Pup G-AZCP on Wed 20th and Jodel D.120 G-BMYU Sat 23rd worthy of mention.
Helicopters featured the usual regulars, but also a number of larger executive machines, with Dauphin A7-HMD twice over a weekend Sat 23rd & Sun 24th, Bell 430 M-DWSF Tue 26th, Agusta A.109E G-EHMC Fri 15th and Mon 18th, and finally the Royal Flight Sikorsky S-76C G-XXEB on Sun 31st.
Sole Jet Ranger was G-XXIV on Fri 22nd, while non-regular Robinson R.44s were G-WAPA on Thu 7th and G-POET Thu 14th. Finally a far from common, indeed rather rare occurrence on Wed 20th was the arrival of a Gyrocopter, G-CGNC – apparently from and to a site near Bath, so quite a flight each way!
MILITARY ACTIVITY
As the Royal Flight Sikorsky S-76C G-XXEB on Sunday 31st does not strictly count, I mention it as the only military movements that did land at Liverpool in August were also both rotary aircraft. RAF Valley based ‘Rescue’ Sea King HAR.3s XZ592 on 3rd and XZ599/P on 31st both appeared to call for fuel following operational missions.
GO-AROUND ACTIVITY
With no Typhoons in August, go-around activity was quieter, although a few days of Tornado GR.4 activity brought about go-arounds by ZA606/069 on Tuesday 12th and again Wednesday 13th along with ZA373/007 on Friday 15th. RAF Valley Hawk T.2s were noted on several occasions, with for variety a RAF Leeming, 100 Squadron Hawk T.1 on Wednesday 6th. Sole RAF Hercules was ZH886 on the afternoon of Friday 15th. To complete this section, mention of a number of go-arounds by the regular 3 King Air 200s from Cranwell.
STATISTICS
It is my wish to see this once regular section return.
EPILOGUE
Well the Carpatair Fokker 100 YR-FKA on 2nd was a welcome rare sight, along with Qatar registered, but UK based, Dauphin helicopter A7-HMD on 23rd and again on 24th. Returning charters brought back both Boeing 757 and Boeing 767 types, while Beluga F-GTSD/4 landed on diversion Monday 18th. At the other end of the scale: Jodel D.120 G-BMYU on 23rd, while on 20th both a Beagle Pup G-AZCP and a Rotorsport MTO gyrocopter G-CGNC show the diversity of movements at LJLA in August!
