AN OVERVIEW FOR MARCH 2015.

AIRPORT AND AIRLINE DEVELOPMENTS

BLUE AIR TO BACAU SERVICE STARTED

Right at the end of the month Blue Air commenced their second route to Liverpool. The inaugural Bacau service was operated by Boeing 737-300, arriving on Tuesday 31st at 2304 on OB233, departing LJLA at 0054 on April 1st on OB234

FLYBE TO AMSTERDAM

Hard on the heels of commencing flights from Belfast City (early February) and increasing the frequency (late March), right at the end of the month they announced a third Liverpool connection, this time to Amsterdam. The service is to start on Monday 7th September with a frequency of three flights per day Monday to Friday and reduced at weekends. Operated by Dash 8Q-400 aircraft outbound flights operate early morning, lunch time and late afternoon, with fares advertised as from £35. The great advantage of this service is that interline connections will be bookable with Flybe through Amsterdam, a facility not currently available with point-to-point EasyJet.

Once the Amsterdam service commences, Flybe will be operating some 120 arrivals and departures per week through Liverpool making it a major player at LJLA.

MONTHLY AIRPORT PASSENGER FIGURES

The Airport monthly passenger figures increased in February and again in March, as reported on the forum and LJLA website press release news section. Good news after several years of mainly losses.

SCHEDULED SERVICE AIRCRAFT

EASYJET (U2/EZY)

Despite wind and fog causing diversions into LJLA, the conditions at Liverpool caused very few diversions away in March with both EasyJet and Ryanair having a good month. Indeed the only diversion away noted during the month by an EasyJet flight was on Monday 16th when G-EZAW on EZY608 from Belfast was about 10 minutes out when Ryanair’s Lear Jet M-ABGV suffered a problem on landing and blocked the runway. The EasyJet made an instant decision to divert to Manchester, however the runway was not blocked for long, the next inbound only being 20 minutes after the Lear Jet. It was 2 hours 20 minutes later that EZY608 passengers eventually got to LJLA, landing at 1839.

Just one EasyJet positioning flight to cover for a problem noted in March was on Tuesday 24th when an A.320 G-EZUF positioned in from Luton as EZY9007 from Luton at 1035, then operated the EZY7101/2 Madrid rotation, before departing at 1737 as EZY9009 back to Luton. On Saturday 28th one of the Geneva rotations operated in reverse as EZY7284/3 in late afternoon, the flight being operated by A.320 HB-JXB.

No training/crew validation flights noted using Liverpool during March either for training or night stopping.

Biggest news for the enthusiast during March was the first visit by an aircraft in EasyJet’s new colours. G-EZEV arrived on base via Belfast during the evening of Thursday 19th, joined on Monday 30th by G-EZDE which arrived via Naples. Both aircraft rotated off Liverpool station early in April.

A.320: G-EZTC/EZTG/EZTT/EZUF/EZUG/EZUP/EZWL/EZWY/HB-JXB. That makes 38 different aircraft, although 2 were only here due to being diverted in from Manchester on 31st.

RYANAIR (FR/RYR)

As with EasyJet, a relatively smooth month of operation, helped by having 6 aircraft on station for the first fortnight, operating a schedule only calling for the use of 3 each day. EI-ENV positioned to Manchester as FR7001P at 0905 on Friday 13th; EI-EVM to Manchester as FR7001 at 0959 on Saturday 14th and EI-ESM to Manchester as FR7001 at 1004 on Sunday 15th. As the summer schedules call for 4 aircraft based at LJLA, the day before EI-EMC arrived from Manchester as FR7 at 1506 on Saturday 28th.

Ryanair aircraft noted at Liverpool during March were:

B.737-800: EIDAF/DAM/DCF/DCJ/DCW/DHC/DLB/DLV/DLX/DPG/DYC/DYN/DYR/DYY/EBE/EBS/EBT/EBX/EFB/EFC/EFD/EFN/EFO/EFP/EFR/EFT/EFV/EKH/EKI/EKL/EKN/EKP/EKR/EKS/EKW/EKX/EMC/EMD/EMF/EMH/ENO/ENP/ENV/ENW/EPE/EPF/ESM/ESN/EMS/EVA/EVI/EVM/FIC. Which makes 53 aircraft, although 3 called only on diversion (DAF, EBT & EKI).

FLYBE (BE/BEE)

In comparison to both EasyJet and Ryanair, Flybe suffered a number of cancellations and disruption on their services from both the Isle of Man and Belfast City.

On the Manx service, on Monday 9th on the first rotation BE601 operated to Manchester, then continued to LJLA as BE601A, arriving at 1019 using G-JECY. LJLA was open at the time. On Friday 13th the afternoon flight JE605 arrived using G-JECK, which then stopped at Liverpool until departing on the evening outbound JE608, so BE606 and BE607 were cancelled. Then towards the end of the month, on Sunday 29th the afternoon rotation BE605/6 was cancelled.

On the Belfast service the morning rotation was cancelled on Wed 11th, Thurs 12th and the later morning rotation on Fri 13th – all likely due to weather in Northern Ireland, which may also have been the case early morning of Fri 20th. However the cancellation of the early morning rotation on Thurs 19th was likely due to brief fog at Liverpool. The route expanded to 4 daily from Monday 30th March.

An increasing number of aircraft are to be seen in the new purple colours, however one of interest was G-ECOK in full Brussels Airlines scheme and titles, only the first IoM rotation on Tuesday 10th.

Flybe aircraft noted at Liverpool during March:

Dash 8-Q400s: GECOB/ECOC/ECOD/ECOE/ECOF/ECOG/ECOH/ECOJ/ECOK/ECOM/ECOO/ECOP/ECOR/FLBA/FLBB/FLBC/FLBE/JECE/JECF/JECI/JECJ/JECK/JECM/JECN/JECO/JECP/JECR/JECX/JECY/JECZ/JEDM/JEDP/JEDR/JEDT/JEDU/JEDV/JEDW/KKEV. Making 38 different aircraft, of which JEDN was only seen on diversion in.

WIZZAIR (W6/WZZ)

The Gdansk and Warsaw flights operated smoothly through March. With the summer schedule introduced at the very end of the month there are changes in timing and an extra flight, with further increase and the Riga service to come in future months.

BLUE AIR (OB/BME)

Big news during March was the launch of the twice weekly Bacau service on Tuesday 31st, with the inaugural flight operated by Boeing 737-300 YR-BAF, departing very early on April 1st.

As there is still interest in the Blue Air visits, I’ll list the aircraft used along with the date of visit.

YR-BAJ (-400) Mon 16th, Wed 18th, Fri 20th.
YR-BAO (-400) Mon 23rd, Mon 30th.
YR-BAS (-400) Mon 2nd, Wed 4th, Fri 6th, Mon 9th, Wed 11th, Fri 13th, Fri 27th.

AIRCRAFT USING LJLA DURING MARCH

More details can often be found in the visiting aircraft log which cross-references to the details summarised here.

CHARTERS, TOURS & FREIGHT OPERATIONS

Fewer charters during March and all had football connections. Out of 12 matches played by LFC and EFC (8 Premiership, 2 FA Cup, 2 Europa League) only 4 required teams to travel by air.

First in was Windrose of the Ukraine with A.320 UR-WRM arriving shortly after midday Wed 11th, departing in the early hours of Friday 13th transporting Dynamo Kyiv to Goodison. For the return leg EFC flew out on Titan’s Boeing 757 G-ZAPX during the morning of Wed 18th, with supporters following the next morning on Transavia Boeing 737-800 PH-HZI, both aircraft arriving back in the early hours of Friday 20th. Domestic matches brought in Newcastle United arriving on Saturday 14th, departing the next after the match at Goodison on a BMRegional Regional Jet RJ-145 G-RJXC, while LFC flew out to Cardiff for their Monday evening match against Swansea on Cello’s BAe.146 G-RAJJ, out on Sunday 15th, back in the early hours of Tuesday 17th.

Not quite the end of this section, as for the LFC v MUFC game at Anfield on Sunday 22nd, supporters arrived from Stavanger on a charter operated by Wideroes Dash 8Q-400 LN-WDI arriving lunch time Friday 20th, and returning home after the game on Sunday 22nd on LN-RDV. There were also a number of biz-jet visitors in connection with a Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher organised charity match on Sunday 29th March at Anfield.

Freight flights again fail to excite, with just 3 Metros being the sum total. Early morning of Tuesday 3rd two Bin Air aircraft arrived with car parts from Ostrava, D-CAVA and D-CNAC, both day stopping at LJLA before one left for Doncaster Sheffield and the other for Cologne. Later in the month Air Nova Metro EC-JCU arrived during the evening of Monday 23rd from Ostrava, departing in the small hours of the following morning for Prague.

DIVERSIONS – GAINS & LOSSES

It is thought that only on Thursday 19th did flights divert away from Liverpool due to morning fog around 7.30 to 9.00am. The early morning Flybe Dash 8 from Belfast City may have cancelled rather than diverted , certainly the morning EasyJet IoM rotation was cancelled, and a Gulfstream biz-jet expected at Liverpool diverted to Manchester and flew over later in the day. The Ryanair Dublin and Derry, Flybe IoM and EasyJet Belfast early inbounds must have all held for a while until the fog thinned shortly after 9am. The rest of the day operated normally as the fog soon cleared totally. As already described in the EasyJet section on Monday 16th an inbound EasyJet diverted to Manchester as the runway at Liverpool was blocked by a Lear Jet – in the event LJLA was only closed for just 20 minutes.

In contrast, Liverpool accepted a number of diverted airline flights during March. Falling snow at Dublin caused Ryanair to divert one aircraft to Liverpool on Sunday 1st, with EI-EKI arriving from Rome early afternoon, continuing its journey to Dublin after an hour on the ground.

Late on Wednesday 11th a Loganair/Flybe SF.340B G-LGNG and a Flybe Dash 8 G-JECI both diverted in after holding waiting for fog at Manchester to shift. Both aircraft dropped their passengers and within an hour had returned to Glasgow and Inverness respectively. A week later and it was early morning fog at Manchester that caused disruption on Wednesday 18th, with 6 airliners diverting to Liverpool, 3 Flybes from Edinburgh, Belfast City and Inverness, a Ryanair from Dublin, a BM Regional RJ-145 from Aberdeen and best of all, after spending a considerable time in the hold, Sunwings/BAW Do.328JET D-BMAD from Billund. All 6 aircraft returned to their point of origin, some empty, others (eg Ryanair and BMR) likely with passengers coached from Manchester. While the larger jets operated into Manchester using Cat.III autoland, if the aircraft is not so equipped, the equipment is tech, or the crew not current on flying Cat.III, then the aircraft are limited as to the RVR acceptable and divert.

Gusting cross-winds caused problems for pilots on a number of days during March. However in the early hours of Tuesday 31st several arrivals at Manchester found conditions to be over the acceptable limits and diverted. Two EasyJet A.320s from Amsterdam and Corfu landed safely at Liverpool. Later the same day, during the afternoon two Ryanair flights found conditions unacceptable at Leeds/Bradford and diverted to Liverpool from Krakow and Dublin. The Krakow aircraft was on the ground nearly 2 hours before continuing to Leeds, while the Dublin passengers were bussed to Leeds, and the Dublin bound passengers brought to Liverpool, the aircraft being on the ground at Liverpool some five and half hours.

TRAINING

No crew training/validation flights, other than by those on go-around only during March.

BIZ-JET VISITORS

Another good month, with a fair variety of types calling. Undoubtedly some were football related in one way or another, but it not easy to say for certain which. Not just for Premiership and Cup games, but on Sunday 29th for a Steven Gerrard organised charity match. It is also noticeable that increasing numbers of non-British operated biz-jets are collecting and a few days later returning with Liverpool originating passengers. There must be a place for a Liverpool based biz-jet operator, but meanwhile let’s enjoy the variety to be seen. I make the count 55 different biz-jets in March featuring 16 different registration nationalities: German, Spanish, Irish, French, British, Italian, Manx, American, Austrian, Belgian, Denmark, Holland, Cayman, Serbia, Israel and Malta.

While there were no BBJs, there were Legacies, a Global Express, Challengers, the first Gulfstreams of the year, A Falcon 7X and a Falcon 900 representing the larger biz-jet types. The Legacies were Hangar 8s G-OTGL on Friday 6th from Luton and night stopped before departure to Farnborough; 9H-WFC on Sunday 8th Stansted-Luton and Avcon Jet’s OE-IDB which departed on Thursday 12th to Kiev soon after the Europa League game at Goodison. The single Global Express was N900GX on Sunday 22nd from Glasgow to Kemble, while Challengers were PH-HWM on Sunday 1st f&t Antwerp, London Executive Aviation’s G-MRAP on Friday 13th, Iceland Food’s Hawarden based M-FRZN on Sunday 22nd and Saturday 28th, night stopping on both occasions and regular G-SJSS twice on Tuesday 31st.

While there had been no visits by Gulfstreams during either January or February, this was made-up for by four during March! Gulfstream 4 N2DF arrived on Monday 9th and left on Wednesday 11th; Eli Lilly’s Gulfstream 4 N312EL on Thursday 19th to Luton, having initially diverted into Manchester due morning fog at Liverpool; Tamir Airway’s Gulfstream 4SP 4X-CPX on Saturday 21st, departing Sunday 22nd Stansted to Barcelona (this aircraft has been to Liverpool before, April 2008) and finally Gulfstream 5 N45JE evening Sunday 22nd departing Monday 23rd. Of note is the fact that both N2DF and N45JE departed direct transatlantic.

Falcon 7X OY-EKC on Monday 2nd was noted with small Lego logos with a further Danish Falcon 2000 OY-CKK from and to Northolt Wednesday 11th (last time this registration was seen at LJLA it was on a Citation 560XLS). A further Falcon 7X was provided by Lion Air Services of the Cayman Islands with VP-CUH on Sunday 8th, to Stuttgart on 9th, returning on 10th before flying across to Manchester. While mentioning Falcons, smaller Falcon 900 M-ROWL arrived on Sunday 22nd departing for Faro the next day and Falcon 50 I-CAFD from and to Milan on Thursday 26th.

Further mid-sized biz-jets were Hawker 800s EI-WXP, likely football related on Sunday 22nd and M-INOR on Sunday 29th and Beechjet 400 G-KLNR on Thursday 12th of Saxon Air. Lear Jets were more numerous than usual with five examples. German aircraft D-CAPO on Tuesday 3rd night stopped and again on Thursday 19th and D-CPRO on Saturday 28th and night stopped; Air Medical brought in G-JMED from Stuttgart on Saturday 7th and G-ZMED from Las Palmas Friday 13th, both likely air ambulance flights and both night stopped; finally Ryanair’s Lear Jet 45 M-ABGV on Monday 16th from Stansted at 1619, however a fault developed on landing and the aircraft briefly blocked the runway. It received attention inside the Ravenair hangar and eventually left on Saturday 21st at 2117 back to Stansted.

As is usual aircraft from the Cessna Citation range were the most numerous type with 25 aircraft out of the 55 visiting biz-jets in March. A fair few Cessna 500/550s with G-CGEI twice, G-FJET, G-IPLY twice, G-SPRE, G-FIRM and the sole non-British YU-BZZ on Sunday 22nd. Fewer Citation 510 Mustangs than usual with Blink’s G-FLBK twice, regular Beauport Aviation G-XAVB and Globe Air with OE-FHK Monday 2nd and OE-FFB Sunday 22nd. Citation 525 CJs featured OO-LIE, OO-ACC, Air Hamburg’s D-CAST, Bristol Aviation Centre’s G-SONE, EC-HIN on Sunday 29th with a football star for the charity match and F-HIJD which arrived on Monday 30th to operate out to Gothenburg returning the following day. Most numerous were the larger Citation 560XL series with G-DEIA, G-EYUP,G-GXLS, G-CHUI, regulars G-OJER and G-CXLS, YU-SVL Wednesday 25th until 27th, Air Hamburg’s D-CSUN Monday 30th and OE-GKM arriving Tuesday 31st. Finally, Citation 680 Sovereign D-CEIS on Friday 27th until Sunday 29th to complete this paragraph.

To bring this section to a close, smaller biz-jets featured Phenom 500 9H-FAM of Luxwings here to operate for a few days, arriving Sunday 8th and operating to Frankfurt, returning on Wednesday 11th to operate a return trip to Paris Le Bourget before leaving for Luton. The Blackpool based Book-a-Jet operated Phenoms both called in March, with G-IOMC arriving on Tuesday 3rd departing Thursday 5th and G-OOMC arrived early Wednesday 11th to operate a day-return to Kortrijk, night stopped and departed for Avignon 0705 on Thursday 12th – however around midday, inbound from Dusseldorf into Blackpool it suffered a nose-wheel collapse on landing there, so will be out of service for a while.

GENERAL AVIATION VISITORS

Another not especially exciting month for GA prop visitors, but then March is effectively still a winter month. British twins mainly featured King Airs with 6 different aircraft: G-ERSE particularly active in the first half of the month, G-FRYI, G-IASA, G-FPLD as ‘calibrator’ on Wednesday 18th, G-NIAA of Northern Ireland Air Ambulance on Friday 20th and G-BYCP. Seneca G-JDBC arrived from Hawarden for maintenance work on Tuesday 3rd for 10 days. Finally for this paragraph Cessna F.406 G-TDSA twice, both times operating from and to its Farnborough base on Tuesdays 3rd and 10th.

On Capital Aviation’s Isle of Man Hospital contract Navajo Chieftain G-VIPX operated regularly until Thursday morning 26th, with G-VIPU from Thursday 26th afternoon. Also their King Air 200 G-WVIP was employed on Thursday 26th and Saturday 28th.

In comparison twins from further afield were few and far between, but do feature the first Avanti visit of the year, with D-IZZY on Tuesday 3rd from Paris/Le Bourget and flying out to Dublin. UK based Navajo N3544M called from and to Denham on Wednesday 18th and on the same day N2086P a PA-23-150 Geronimo (an Apache conversion) arrived from its Caernarfon base and stayed at Liverpool for maintenance work.

By comparison non-UK singles were a little more numerous with PA-46s N916C for LFC home games on Sunday 1st and Sunday 22nd from and to its Elstree base, with another of the breed F-GPKL on Wednesday 11th from and to Tours. I always feel PC-12s should be more common visitors, however M-DRIL called on Friday 20th. Two Cirrus SR.22s were N321W on Monday 23rd from and to Coventry and OY-JCA on Thursday 26th from and to Randers in Denmark with finally a mention of a rare Irish GA movement with Cherokee EI-DJM staying from Monday 6th to Wednesday 8th, from and to Waterford.

Visiting British GA singles mainly featured Cherokees, indeed the only non-Piper noted was frequent caller Cirrus G-OGGM. There were 5 Cherokees: G-COVA on Tuesday 3rd from and to Coventry, G-BTNV on Thursday 5th routing Barton to Sleap, G-GFRA twice out to its IoM home on Sunday 8th, G-BOOG on Friday 20th and finally G-CBWD from Carlisle on Tuesday 24th and onto Biggin Hill on 27th.

Helicopter visitors were well down, and mostly regulars. The more up-market types only featured The Royal Flight Sikorsky S-76C G-XXEB on Monday 23rd, Agusta A.109 G-MAOL on Sunday 15th and again Thursday 19th along with regular M-YMCM Bell 429 on several days. Squirrels just featured G-NLDR until departing on 3rd, G-NTWK Tuesday 17th and night stopped with G-ORDH on Tuesday 3rd with passengers to and from Cheltenham races. That just leaves mention of visits by Robinson R.44 G-CFNF and G-CEKA which both have Helicentre connections.

RESIDENT AIRCRAFT ACTIVITY AND CHANGES

No changes to resident aircraft noted during March. Several good calm days, especially when at a weekend, brought out the general aviation aircraft in some numbers. Mooney M.20F G-BIWR arrived from Sleap on 27th, likely here for maintenance.

Over with Helicentre Robinson R.22 G-OBIO was frequently active, as were the local Robinson R.44s. Although Liverpool is a good distance from Cheltenham Races, the associated ‘Jockey’ call-signs were to be heard with two residents, EC-120B G-OMEM as ‘Jockey 121’ on Wednesday 11th arriving from Cheltenham in the early afternoon as ‘Jockey 121’, having departed LJLA the previous afternoon for a private location. Meanwhile, also on Wednesday 11th Robinson R.44 left in the morning as ‘Jockey 141’ returning from the races the same evening. On Friday 13th Cheshire Helicopters Squirrel G-ORDY collected passengers for Cheltenham in the morning as ‘Jockey 47’, bringing them home the same evening.

MILITARY AIRCRAFT VISITORS

Following the civil registered French Air Force Grob aircraft last month, in March a French Air Force Xingu called, no.084 coded ‘YH’ late morning of Friday 13th, staying for a little over an hour and a half. There was also a French Navy Falcon 10, but that is correctly covered in the ‘go-around’ section.

Only aircraft from the British forces to land during March was RAF BN-2T Islander ZG998 on Thursday 19th operating from Waddington in mid-afternoon.

GO-AROUND ACTIVITY

The most notable aircraft on go-around was French Navy Falcon 10 No.129 on Tuesday 10th at 1331. Otherwise excitement was restricted, although there were two Tornados, with ZA553/045 at 1425 on Tuesday 17th with ZD705/118 at 1637 on Wednesday 18th and Hercules ZH885 on Wednesday 4th in the morning and late afternoon Wednesday 11th. Otherwise only the ‘regular’ King Air 200s ZK458/D and ZK459/X both appearing several times and the regular Hawk T.1s and T.2 from RAF Valley.

Civilian twins were Hawarden based King Air 90 M-TSRI twice on Thursday 12th and Twin Star G-CEWN several times on Tuesday 10th. Cherokee Arrow G-BOOG was noted on approach and go-around Thursday 19th. Police MD-900 helicopter featured regular G-GMPX on Monday 9th and Thursday 12th, with a different one, G-YPOL, on Wednesday 25th. Finally, Robinson R.66 G-SYES was noted on go-around Thursday 19th.

EPILOGUE

Once again hard to pick out a single highlight, however airliner-wise the Windrose of the Ukraine Airbus A.320 and the two Wideroe Dash 8Q-400s stand out, as does the Sunwings Do.328 with German registration and BAW colours on diversion. Biz-jet wise, the Israeli Gulfstream 4 is none too common, seven years after its previous visit; while the Cayman Falcon 7X stands out too. Military wise the French Navy Falcon on go-around stands out while the French Air Force brought in a Xingu, staying for little under two hours on Friday 13th.
