NOTES AND ABBREVIATIONS

31/1508 shows that the aircraft stayed over midnight, departing on the date and time shown

f&t = from and to. Where the point of origin and destination are different, both locations are named separated by a - .

All times are quoted as ‘local’ time, so are GMT/UTC + 1 hour. As the source material is in UTC, an error by one hour is possible, but hopefully very infrequent.

G/A refers to an aircraft that did not land, performing a go-around only, but did not touch down. t&g is 'touch and go'.

The registrations of aircraft operating on call-signs, especially RAF aircraft on Go-Around are not always 100% accurate. Where a code and direction of Go-Around are given, this means that the registration was confirmed by Mk.1 eyeball (well, usually a digital image!).

Where an aircraft operated on call-sign, this is noted by official 2 or 3-letter abbreviation. If there is no call-sign, then the aircraft operated using the registration. Where there is just one call-sign, the same flight number was used both in- and out-bound.

'Football related' or similar comments are generally determined by the times and point of origin/destination and is guesswork, not absolute known fact.

The source material does not name non-registered airfield sites, these are covered by the blanket term ‘private site’. Nor does it identify diverted flights or the reason for the diversion, however these can usually be worked out from other sources.

'WX' = literally 'weather closed', 'Dvt' = diverted in, 'chtr' = charter flight.  More detail in the Report section that follows.

AER LINGUS TO RETURN

2015 is shaping up to be a good year for the Airport with yet another new operator selecting Liverpool for a new route. In this case Aer Lingus will be returning in October on the Dublin route to challenge Ryanair, who through putting on poorly timed flights and then cutting back frequency have been running the route down. Aer Lingus, with 16 well-timed flights a week have the significant advantage of being able to offer competitive through fares transatlantic. They will be using A.320 jets, not commuter props, which is another plus. Undoubtedly Ryanair will put on more flights with more low fare seats in retaliation, which will be good for customer choice and undoubtedly the route will grow back to and hopefully exceed the record passenger figures of a few years ago.

What this does, following on Flybe commencing Belfast City flights, is to place Liverpool firmly back on the map as the passenger’s number one choice for Irish Sea crossings.

MORE FLIGHTS DEPART ON TIME FROM LIVERPOOL THAN OTHER AIRPORTS

During 2014 over 90% of flights at LJLA arrived or departed early or within 15 minutes of the scheduled time. Quite a record which the average across the 10 busiest British Airports comes anywhere near equalling or even bettering.

PASSENGER GROWTH CONTINUES

The Airport have already published their figures for passengers through LJLA in May 2015 which are up a healthy 7.5% over May 2014 at 375,623, and the total for the first 5 months of the year up 5% on the same period.

TERMINAL INTERNAL CHANGES

Following the pictures on the link given last month showing the results of winter changes within departures, a new phase of internal changes has commenced with the replacement of the former Wetherspoons unit on Level 3. Good to see that overall passenger experience ranks as a high priority for the new management team.

SCHEDULED SERVICE AIRCRAFT

EASYJET (U2/EZY)

Hardly any disruption to LJLA flights during May, and what disruption there was, was kept to a minimum. On Friday 1st evening flight EZY7076 G-EZBL destined for Nice, diverted to Lyon, so returned to Liverpool later as EZY9010. On Sunday 3rd the early afternoon IoM rotation EZY635 G-EZGB returned to LJLA after 1 hour 20 minutes in the air, as Ronaldsway was closed. Presumably most passengers completed their journeys on the evening flight. Due to a problem elsewhere, G-EZAJ departed to Luton as EZY9019 evening of Tuesday 12th, with G-EZDI arriving from Paris as EZY9020 early hours the following morning. On Friday 15th G-EZFB positioned in from Manchester as EZY9006 to operate rotations to Berlin and Nice, before positioning to Belfast as EZY9016 shortly before midnight. On Saturday 23rd G-EZAJ positioned from Southend as EZY9006 to operate the Barcelona and Alicante rotations, before leaving the following day as EZY9001 for Lisbon, finally on Friday 29th G-EZBW positioned from and to Berlin as EZY9011/9012 in order to operate a rotation to Krakow.

The training aircraft overnighted at LJLA between 12th and 14th using G-EZED, visiting Chateauroux, Doncaster-Sheffield and Newquay for circuit training/crew validation.

RYANAIR (FR/RYR)

Ryanair seemed to have a trouble free month during May, certainly no positioning flights were required.

FLYBE (BE/BEE)

Flybe too had a relatively trouble free month. On the Isle of Man service, on Friday 1st BE601 operated by G-ECOB arrived on time, but did not depart, so BE602 passengers had to wait for the afternoon flight, while their aircraft even later in the day flew off to Birmingham as BE042D. On Sunday 3rd early afternoon outbound BE606 passengers on G-ECOO may have initially diverted into Belfast City before completing their journey to the IoM on the same aircraft. On the Belfast City route the first morning rotation on Monday 4th and Monday 25th did not operate, but as these were both Bank Holidays they may never have been entered in the booking system. The final rotation on Wednesday 20th was cancelled, while the first morning rotations on Friday 8th and Wednesday 27th were operated by ERJ-175 jets.

Again most of the Dash 8 fleet visited during May: G-ECOA, ECOB, ECOC, ECOD, ECOE, ECOG, ECOH, ECOI, ECOK, ECOM, ECOO, ECOR, FLBA, FLBB, FLBD, FLBE, JECE, JECF, JECG, JECH, JECI, JECJ, JECK, JECL, JECM, JECN, JECO, JECP, JECR, JECX, JECY, JECZ, JEDM, JEDP, JEDR, JEDU, JEDV, JEDW, KKEV and ERJ-175s G-FBJC, G-FBJI. Total 39 Dash 8s and 2 ERJs.

WIZZAIR (W6/WZZ)

With 8 flights per week to Gdansk (Tue, Thu, Sat mornings), Warsaw (Tue, Thu, Sat evenings) and Riga (Fri and Monday late evening) Wizzair have a much greater presence at LJLA than last summer. All flights operated.

A.320s operated into LJLA in May: HA-LPK, LPL, LPM, LPN, LPO, LPQ, LPR, LPS, LPT, LPZ, LWC. LWD, LWF, LWP, LPZ, LYA, LYG, LYJ, LYN. Total 19 different aircraft.

BLUE AIR (OB/BME)

With both their Bucharest and Bacau flights now getting established, another smooth month of operation, with a number of flights arriving early. As there is still interest in when individual aircraft visit, I’ll also give dates, the ‘B’ indicating a Bacau flight.

CHARTERS, TOURS & FREIGHT OPERATIONS

In interesting month with a fair variety created by passenger inbound and outbound charters along with those for football teams.

Half of the Premiership games played by LFC and EFC in May generated team charter flights. Arriving Friday 8th and departing Saturday evening, Sunderland FC used Eastern EMB-145 G-CHMR to fly from and to Newcastle for their game at Goodison Park. Eastern used to be a regular transport for football teams, but this is their first visit to LJLA this year. Same weekend LFC returned late Sunday 10th from Luton on Cello BAe.146 G-RAJJ, having earlier played Chelsea. The following weekend BM Regional EMB-145 G-RJXG arrived Friday 15th, departing late Saturday, from and to Gatwick with Crystal Palace, playing at Anfield. While on the final day of the regular 2014/15 season Spurs travelled from/to their meeting with Everton on BM Regional EMB-146 G-RJXD from and to Stansted Saturday 23rd, departing mid evening Sunday after the match.

Two weekend break and match charters operated from Scandinavia for the Anfield, LFC v. QPR game on Saturday 2nd – when the trips were planned this looked like being a major European Cup qualification decider game, in the event it was little more than a routine end of season match with a disappointing result. One group arrived from Stavanger on a Wideroe Dash 8 –Q400 LN-RDV arriving Friday 1st, departing on Sunday 3rd. The other group arrived from Oslo on a Jettime Boeing 737-300 OY-JTC, also Friday 1st, the aircraft positioning out. The return flight on Monday 4th did not go smoothly, as positioning Boeing 737-700 OY-JTS was declared ‘tech’ on arrival and could not be fixed immediately. Near six hours late the group left on a replacement Jettime Boeing 737-700 OY-JTT, with OY-JTS following empty the next afternoon after 27 hours on the ground. Jettime don’t have a good record at LJLA as it was one of their aircraft that stranded LFC supporters here a few years back, going ‘tech’ before the outbound leg of a supporter’s charter.

One further group charter, which may have been a sports team operated on Sunday 3rd, using Van Air Europe’s LET-410 OK-RDA for a day-return from and to the Isle of Man.

The short series of Spanish language student’s charters which commenced in April continued into June, with flights on Fridays 8th and 22nd in the early afternoon, both the Evelop Airline flights were operated using Orbest Airbus A.320 CS-TRL. On 8th routing Leon-Valladolid and on 22nd routed Salamanca-Valladolid. The last of the flights operated in early June. A one week Newmarket Holidays tour to Northern Italy operated in May, the first for a while. Both outbound and inbound flights were operated by Small Planet Airlines Airbus A.320 LY-SPA, departing to Verona early on Wednesday 20th, returning from Verona early afternoon Wednesday 27th. Final passenger charter of the month to cover is the outbound leg of a JWT/Wrexham Diocese Lourdes Pilgrimage, departing early on Wednesday 27th to Tarbes, operated by Transavia Boeing 737-800 PH-HZO. They returned in early June.

Good month then for passenger charters, but a disastrous one for freight with not a single flight being identified as a freight charter in the whole month.

DIVERSIONS – GAINS & LOSSES

Thankfully for the passenger, May did not suffer from severe adverse weather, strikes and unexpected situations that marred April. Consequently there is not a great deal for this section to relate.

On Sunday 3rd the early afternoon EasyJet flight EZY635 to the Isle of Man could not land there, held for a while, then returned to Liverpool. The EZY Gatwick flight returned to Gatwick and it is possible that the Flybe Liverpool-IoM flight diverted to Belfast City, later completing the flight to the IoM as the same aircraft later operated the evening IoM-LJLA rotation. The later afternoon easyJet flight operated without problem, presumably absorbing the delayed passengers. As the weather was benign, possibly the problem was some form of ground incident. On Tuesday 5th Ryanair Boeing 737-800 EI-DWG diverted into LJLA during the morning due to strong gusting cross winds at Leeds/Bradford. The aircraft continued to its destination after 2 hours on the ground. On Monday 25th British Aerospace communications ‘hack’ BAe.146-200 G-TYPH arrived mid afternoon from Bari, Italy. Not a true diversion, as BAe ops knew in advance that its usual destination was closed on Bank Holiday Monday. The aircraft was parked on ‘Tango’, the EasyJet apron, and departed for Warton shortly after midday on Wednesday. Finally EasyJet Airbus A.320 G-EZWK from Corfu landed at Liverpool early afternoon Saturday 30th. Although windy, the diversion was likely due to landing delays at Manchester after some sort of ground incident earlier. The aircraft departed for its intended destination after only 45 minutes on the ground here. On Sunday 31st a Monarch A.321 G-ZBAI requested diversion from Manchester while in the hold there due to a delay while debris was cleared from the runway in strong winds. The aircraft though proceeded to land at Manchester as scheduled.

Despite periods of strong gusting winds at LJLA, as the direction was usually near down the runway (rather than across it as in April), no flights were recorded as diverting away from Liverpool – so a good month for travellers from LJLA by air.

TRAINING

Although the EasyJet crew training/validation Airbus A.319 stopped overnight at LJLA during one week of May, no training circuits were flown at Liverpool. Aircraft training that did not land ie on go-around only have their own section later.

BIZ-JET VISITORS

In terms of numbers and variety of types rather an average month, but plenty still to comment on. By my count 36 different biz-jets of 12 registration nationalities but of just only 9 main types. Fewer larger biz-jets this month, most interesting being Carnival Cruises’s Gulfstream 650 N305CC which arrived in the very early hours of Monday 25th direct from Chicago and onward to Hamburg the following day. Carnival now own Cunard and brought in top management for the 175th anniversary and ‘Three Queens’ event. Challenger G-SJSS is a regular and called on Thursday 28th, while Falcon 2000 OY-CKK which was active at LJLA between Tuesday 26th and Friday 29th was very likely in use by Sir Paul McCartney as transport between concerts. While a number of regular types did not put in an appearance during May, Lear Jets clocked up no less than 5 different examples. On ambulance flights came Canadian C-GIWO on Tuesday 12th from Keflavik, returning to Canada via Keflavik on Thursday 14th and LX-LAR from Palma on Friday 1st. The others were all German registered with Air Alliance’s D-CITY on Friday 8th from and to Cologne, Quick Air Jet Charter’s D-CFGG from Turkey on Thursday 14th and night stopped, while D-CPRO called on Saturday 16th and again Wednesday 27th from Zagreb on both occasions. The only other non-Citation biz-jet were Phenoms M-YTOY out to Montpelier on Fri 1st, returning on Sunday 3rd with Luxwing’s 9H-FAM from Genoa to Dublin on Thursday 7th, and Dublin to Guernsey on Saturday 9th.

As usual well over half of the visiting biz-jets are various marks of Cessna Citation. Older Citation 550s were YU-BTB from Arad, Romania on Monday 25th and the regular London Executive operated G-SPUR twice over the last weekend of the month, when Spurs played at Goodison Park, not a co-incidence! Five of the small Citation 510 Mustangs, three from Globe Air of Austria with OE-FWF early in the month, OE-FNP on 16th, and OE-FCB on Friday 29th from Dublin to Nice. London Executive Avn G-LEAA called twice, and D-IKOE on Saturday 30th and night stopped, from Dublin to Rendsburg. Just 6 of the larger Citation 560 XL and no examples of the Citation 680 Sovereign. Air Hamburg’s D-CAHO on Monday 11th Jersey to Exeter and D-CEFO on Saturday 16th Geneva to Bresica, with Prince Aviation’s YU-SPC called again on Tuesday 12th, from and to Dublin, while London Executive’s G-GXLS, Fly Vectra’s G-VECT and Beauport Aviation’s G-OJER are all regulars.

Well over half of the Citations, indeed a third of all visiting biz-jets in May were Citation 525 CitationJets, with 13 in all. Four were German registered, with Air Hamburg operating D-IBJJ out to Brescia Saturday 2nd, returning Tuesday 5th, D-IMGW from Brescia Tuesday 19th and D-CAST from Arad Friday 22nd along with Aeroline’s D-IMAX from Nice Saturday 16th, returning there Monday 18th. Bristol Flight Centre call-signs were used by G-TBEA Tuesday 19th and return the next day, and G-SONE on Friday 29th while Blink’s G-FBNK called in Tuesday 19th. Manx registered G-WMWM arrived Tuesday 19th and stayed until 21st, while from and to Billund OY-NDP arrived Sunday 24th, leaving on 26th. From further away in Europe came Queen Air’s OK-PBS to Frankfurt Saturday 2nd returning on Tuesday 5th, YU-BUU on Saturday evening 2nd from Constanta to Belgrade, Jung Sky’s 9A-JSC from and to Zagreb on Saturday 16th and Luxwing’s 9H-ALL to Milan on Tuesday 12th, returning on 14th.

GENERAL AVIATION VISITORS

May proved to be a varied month with a variety of UK based, US registered aircraft and a greater number of different Cirrus aircraft than usual. There were also two, first visit of types in a single month.

Of the GA and taxis twins, King Airs were less numerous than in recent months with regulars G-ERSE and G-FRYI , Sunday 24th, joined by G-FLYW on Friday 29th and Northern Ireland Air ambulance G-NIAA on Tuesday 26th and Saturday 30th from and to Belfast Intl. Most notable was N700UT a Beech 350 King Air which arrived from Reykjavik on Tuesday 19th before flying on to Leicester. This aircraft bore the University of Tennessee logo on the tail. Other American twins during May were Isle of Man based Twin Comanche N8818Y on Wednesday 13th and regular Fairoaks based Baron N266EA on Tuesday 19th. Air Med brought in their Oxford based Cheyenne III G-GMED on Saturday 23rd, while Cranfield University brought their Jetstream 31 G-NFLA up for multiple half hour locals sampling atmospheric conditions over the Irish Sea with students between Monday 11th and Wednesday 13th. Another aircraft here to fly locals, but this time for calibration purposes was Cobham’s Diamond Twin Star G-COBS on Thursday 21st, having arrived the day before and left the day after.

The Manx Government hospital flights were operated by Capital’s Navajo Chieftain G-VIPU until the morning of Wednesday 27th, after which it had a problem at Ronaldsway, replaced the same afternoon by G-VIPV that took-over until beyond the end of the month. These flights were busier than they were during April.

Quite an increase in May of visits by overseas registered single GA types. Of the larger single turbo-prop types were a PC-12 OY-NBS calling again on Friday 1st from Roskilde, Malibu Meridian N46WK and Manx resident Cessna 208 N533DL, both on Saturday 30th. Another Manx resident was Maule N982NW on Tuesday 12th likely on its way home from White Waltham, while Cherokee Six N129SC on Thursday 14th routed through from IoM to Weston near Dublin having night stopped. Polished metal Mooney M20M N333DE, a North Weald resident arrived on Sunday 17th and night stopped. Cirrus SR.22s during May were more numerous than usual, properly reflecting their growing popularity, with D-EPRS on Thursday 7th from and to Paderborn, N928SK from and to Leeds/Bradford on Friday 8th, N696PG from and to Bournemouth on Saturday 16th, N141HT from and to Staverton on Thursday 28th, Blackpool based regular G-OGGM twice each on Tuesday 5th and Friday 8th, G-OOUK on Monday 11th routing through from a private site to Staverton on Monday 11th.

Cherokees featured visits by G-MPAA from Sleap on Friday 1st, G-BGVN an Arrow from Fairoaks on Wednesday 13th, Carlisle Flying School’s G-RNCH on Friday 15th, Flintshire Flying Group’s G-NINC on Monday 18th and Gloucester based G-BKCC on Sunday 24th. Sole visiting Cessna 172 was Woodvale resident G-BCVJ on Saturday 30th.

A first visit of type during May was a Stoddard-Hamilton Glastar G-MHGS, which arrived along with Czech Sportcruiser G-OFSP from Shobdon on Thursday 21st. The Glastar then flew home to Barton, the Sport Cruiser left behind for Permit Renewal maintenance here.

The second first visit by type during May was G-VVBZ a Guimbal Cabri G2, a small 2-seater helicopter, which arrived from Elstree on Tuesday 19th. Larger helicopters included regulars, Bell 429 M-YMCM, Dauphin EI-GJL and S-76 G-PACO. Of more note was Agusta A.109 G-POTR on Friday 15th and with Royal family passengers, S-76C G-XXEB Thursday 14th and Agusta A.109 G-XXEC on Friday 22nd. Although seen overhead, routing through the zone on occasions, two Bond HEMS Air Ambulance Eurocopter EC.135s actually called-in during May, G-WASC on Sunday 10th and G-NWAA on Wednesday 13th. Other Eurocopters being EC.135 G-MSPT from and to Elstree on Thursday 14th and EC.120B G-OTFL on Thursday 7th. Jet Rangers are now rather infrequent visitors, however during May G-TREE called on Friday 13th. The ‘Three Queens’ event on Monday 25th, with the 3 cruiseliners together in the Mersey for the 175th anniversary of the first transatlantic sailing by Cunard Line brought in three camera equipped helicopters operating for tv news companies, with Squirrels G-VGMC and G-DCAM and Robinson R.44 G-PIXL. To wind-up this section just mention that the regulars, Robinson R.44s G-CFNF and G-CEKA, Robinson R.66 G-SYES and Ecureuil G-GMCM all put in appearances during May, so making quite a good active month for rotary visitors.

RESIDENT AIRCRAFT ACTIVITY AND CHANGES

Another new resident has moved in, G-BRNV a Cherokee Archer which arrived on Thursday 7th, likely from its previous home at Great Oakley, Essex on a change of ownership. Since arrival it has flown locals and visited Caernarfon and Barton. The more settled days during May have seen a number of our GA residents up and flying, such as Citabria G-BFHP on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd, Aerostar N711TL venturing out to Turweston on Wednesday 17th, Cessna 303 N889VF to Caernarfon on Monday 4th, Cherokee G-ARVT on Saturday 30th, while vintage Cessna C-165 G-BTDE ventured away to Derby/Egington on Monday 4th and Duxford on Sunday 17th. A particularly active older resident was Chipmunk G-BCSL which visited Barton, Welshpool, Sleap, Shobdon and Old Warden (for a 69th anniversary of the type’s first flight) during May.

Helicentre’s helicopters were heard on Friday 8th using ‘Jockey’ call-signs, so presumably out to Chester races with Robinson R.44 G-OGJC as ‘Jockey 4’ and EC.120B G-OMEM as ‘Jockey 8’.

MILITARY AIRCRAFT VISITORS

Another disappointing month, with not a single military aircraft landing – those on go-around are recorded in the next section.

GO-AROUND ACTIVITY

Not a bad month, but nothing to get too excited about, with 8 Hawks, 5 Tornados , an A.400M, a Hercules and a Grob from the RAF, along with a couple of Police helicopters and a flight checker King Air 200.

All the Hawks were Valley based, only XX161 was of interest on 27th May, as it had no 208 Sqdn markings applied to nose or tail. The Tornados wereMarham Wing’s ZD844/107 (no unit colours) early afternoon and ZA456 mid evening on Tuesday 12th May; ZA607/EB-X mid evening Wednesday 13th in full 41 Sqdn, Coningsby marks; finally ZA546/038 (no unit markings) and 41 Sqdn marked ZA607/EB-X again, together, early afternoon Thursday 28th May. The Hercules C.4 was ZH867 early afternoon Thursday 14th, while the A.400M Atlas ZM402 performed two Go-arounds of 09 early afternoon of Friday 8th – the same day as the crash in Spain that grounded the type pending investigation. That leaves just mention of an infrequent Grob G.115 Tutor sighting with G-CGKS from Woodvale during the afternoon of Tuesday 26th.

Civilians were police MDH.900 Explorers G-GMPX morning of Wednesday 6th and G-CMBS mid evening of Friday 29th, both operating from Barton. Finally a straight and level, undercarriage up pass along 27 by Cobham’s calibration King Air 200 G-FPLD at midday on Thursday 14th May.

EPILOGUE

May has been an excellent month for in and out-bound charters, using aircraft registered in Norway, Denmark, Portugal, Lithuania, Holland, the Czech Republic and Britain operated by Wideroe, Jettime, Evelop, Small Planet, Transavia, Van Air/Citywings, bm regional, Eastern and Cello. Who would have thought that not long ago we would have biz-jets registered in Croatia, Serbia, Malta and Czech Republic calling routinely? The BAe.146 operated by BAe Systems, although based not far away at Warton is rarely seen away from factory locations. Good to see an increase in light aircraft visiting, while on the ILS and go-around the A.400M provides a distinctive shape and sound, while the Tornados generally do add sound as they exit up the Mersey! Just one highlight, then likely a tie between the BAe Systems operated BAe.146 and Carnival Cruise Lines Gulfstream 650 N305CC!
