INTRODUCTION TO THE 1960 AIRPORT VISITING AIRCRAFT LOGS This is the first of what will hopefully develop over the next couple of years into a complete coverage of Speke Airport’s aircraft movements in the 1960s and 1970s and hopefully back into the latter half of the ‘50s too. The 1960 movements were initially recorded by Phil Butler as a transcription of the ATC ‘Tower Logs’ at the time. All aircraft to be seen active at the Airport during the calendar year were recorded; visiting aircraft on each and every occasion, residents and regular scheduled airliners on their first movement of the year. The result is a fascinating, detailed picture of past activity. The Logs recorded date, registration, type, point of origin and destination, along with other details such as operator, diversion etc. During each year the first visit of year by each aircraft registration was noted, first visit of each type and first visit of each airline and air arm. On an’ Excel’ version these are shown in bold print, while first ever visits by type are also underlined. There are some weaknesses though. Regular airliners, seen daily, were only recorded once a year on their first visit – after that no mention, the same is true of the residents. At the time there was a feeling “well the locals know why a particular aircraft called, so why write it down?” means that the reasons behind visiting aircraft have largely not been recorded, neither were the times of arrival or departure. Some clues have been extracted from the monthly highlights in MGAE’s ‘Northern Aeronews’ (later ‘Flypast’) magazines of the time and personal records. The logs are also weak on recording the departure of residents and any alterations to schedule service operations. These weaknesses only apparent now, are of little significance when put against the remarkable historic record built up then – and indeed continues to this day. I’ve tried to use abbreviations as little as possible, other than fairly standard industry or ‘spotter’ ones. Then an aircraft ‘overshot’ (O/S), today it is a ‘Go-around’ (G/A). ‘Dvt’ shows the arrival as being a diversion from elsewhere, while ‘WX’ or literally ‘Weather Out’ shows a flight that has diverted in due to fog, snow or cross-wind conditions. Our own regular flights diverting out due to snow fall or fog are not listed. Up until 1966 I intend to use ‘local’ names for airports, so Birmingham becomes Elmdon, Cardiff – Rhoose, Edinburgh-Turnhouse, Manchester-Ringway etc. Two that might need some explanation are Nutts Corner, which was Belfast’s civil airport before a move onto the military Aldergrove(Oct ’63) and Renfrew , which was Glasgow’s civil airport before the move to Abbotsinch (June ’66). The Capital’s airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted are known as such throughout. Interesting to look at how often business twins and even GA used Heathrow and Gatwick throughout the '60s decade. I still have, so have been able to reference 1960 and 1961 Ian Allan 'Civil Aircraft Markings' to help with types and owners/operators. In the owners column, the owner given may (on a few occasions) be a known company with Liverpool connections, rather than the official registered owner. There are certainly a few occasions where even the official CAA G-INFO listing entry lags well behind actual ownership change. So treat owners/operators as a guide, not absolute fact. The well-thumbed, 55 year old log-books are hand-written, often originally transcribed from a weak carbon copy sheet. The airfields of arrival/departure were recorded as a 4 letter code. At times the like of EGHH (Bournemouth) and EGNH (Blackpool), or EGBE (Coventry) and EGBG (Leicester), for example are hard to tell apart, while a number of airfield codes have changed with time, a few may simply be written down incorrectly in the first place! Where a code has defied translation, I've used it in the from/to column in the hope it may gain a meaning in the future. My thanks to Phil Butler and to the 'Airfield Information Research Group' forum for their help. SETTING THE SCENEThe year 1960 was the last year that Speke Airport was operated by the civil servants from the Ministry of Aviation. The relatively small team of staff was led by Airport Commandant W.Harris, DFC and his Manager, Jack Chadwick. Although historians might state that while under Ministry control throughout the ‘50s, Speke lost out to Council controlled Ringway in terms of equipment, investment, operators and routes; 1960 at Speke was a year of developments and innovation, both by nationalised BEA and the independent airlines as the Airport headed towards a change of ownership. At the start of 1960 scheduled services were operated by BEA from Ringway, via Speke to the Isle of Man and Belfast Nutts Corner using Douglas Dakotas. Daily services to Dublin were operated by Aer Lingus with a mix of Dakota, Friendship and occasional Viscount equipement. Cambrian operated a summer season service to Jersey via Cardiff (in 1959 had mostly been by DH Heron). Locally based airline, Starways, operated year round to Heathrow as well as a number of summer season destinations and inclusive tour charters, using Dakotas and Skymasters. On a smaller, local scale ‘niche’ operator Federated Air Transport operated ‘mushroom’ and newspaper freight flights, mainly to Dublin using a Dragon Rapide and an Anson. There were very few private general aviation based light aircraft, indeed the sole resident aero club was down to just the one aircraft. Nearly every sentence in the previous paragraph changed during the year. After the Visiting Aircraft Log, I’ll include and ‘Annual Review’ summary highlighting the changes to scheduled service routes and operators, lists of all visiting aircraft types and registrations, airlines and the resident aircraft. These Logs were compiled day-by-day, week-by-week at the time by Phil Butler. In 1976 Tony Williams transcribed them into new books and compiled detailed listing of each visiting aircraft, type, airline and resident – which has helped me considerably. RESIDENT AIRCRAFT, AS AT 1st JANUARY 1960With Starways: Dakotas G-AMPO, G-AMPY, G-AMSN and Skymaster G-APEZ; while a further Skymaster G-APIN was away on winter lease to Trans Arabian Airlines. Federated Air Transport: Dragon Rapide G-ANZP and Anson 1 G-ALXC; while a further Anson 1 G-AMBE was away on lease for 10 months. The Merseyside and North Wales Flying Group had a single Auster G-AGVI. Other privately owned light aircraft were: G-AOEZ an Auster Aiglet; G-AOJH Fox Moth with Harry Patterson for pleasure flights; G-APVE Piaggio P.166 with Lord Derby’s Stanley Estate and Stud; EI-ALL Beech Bonanza; EI-AKR a Bellanca 260 and finally N9962F a Bellanca Cruisair that had not flown for quite some time. One recent departure had been Auster G-AOFJ which suffered an accident at Old Warden 27.11.59, and sold before repair was completed. The full list for 1960 follows in the tables after the Visiting Aircraft Movements Log.

ALTERNATIVE AIRFIELD NAMES and notes specific to the 1960s Perhaps controversally I have called airports/airfields by their 'local' names, they way most were known during the 50s and 60s. As 'Speke' grew up in 1966 into Liverpool Airport with the opening of the new runway, so in 1966 I have changed from 'local' to city or regional names.
So a 'decode' for the period 1960-1965 is required, along with a few notes. AIRPORTS/AIRFIELDS, where I have used 'local' name, rather than the City/Town name now applied. LOCAL NAME NOW CALLED LOCAL NAME NOW CALLED Abbotsinch Glasgow Airport (from 6.66) Langar military use ended 1963 RAF Aldergrove Belfast Airport (from 10.63)Lulsgate Bottom Bristol Airport Baginton Coventry Luton London/Luton Burnaston Derby (closed 1965, Middleton St George Teeside Airport 1966, now DTV 2004. with private flying until 1990) Nutts Corner Belfast (closed 10.63) Crosby on Eden Carlisle Peterborough at the time Glatton Crosland Moor Huddersfield (now known as Conington/Peterborough Business Airport) Dalcross Inverness Renfrew Glasgow Airport (closed 6.66) Doncaster eventually closed 1992 Rhoose Cardiff Airport (NB don't confuse with DSA ex Finningley) Ringway Manchester Airport Dyce Aberdeen Ronaldsway Isle of Man Airport Eastleigh Southampton Speke Liverpool Airport Elmdon Birmingham Squires Gate Blackpool Gatwick London/Gatwick Stansted London/Stansted Goodwood Chichester RAF St Mawgan Newquay Airport Hamble Airfield & CoAT closed 1985 Teversham Cambridge Hawarden Chester Turnhouse Edinburgh Heathrow London/Heathrow Usworth Sunderland (closed by 1984) Horsham St Faith Norwich Airport since 1969 Woolsington Newcastle Hurn Bournemouth Wymeswold closed 1968 RAF Jurby, IoM military use ended 9.63 Yeadon Leeds/Bradford Airport Kidlington Oxford Staverton Gloucester AIRFIELDS, where I have used the City/Town name, rather than local name! TOWN/CITY NAME ALTERNATIVE AIRFIELD NAME TOWN/CITY NAME ALTERNATIVE AIRFIELD NAME Barrow in Furness Walney Island Pwllheli Broom Hall Battersea Heliport Westland Heliport Southend Rochford Booker High Wycombe Stoke Meir (limited activity to 1973) or Wycombe Air Park Swansea Fairwood Common Dundee Riverside Sydenham Belfast City Airport since 1983 East Midlands(open 4.65) Castle Donnington Wolverhampton Pendeford, closed 1970 Perth Scone (NB this is not Halfpenny Green, today's Wolverhampton Airport!) AIRFIELDS with names constantly applied through time. Plenty of these, especially RAF stations eg Valley, Shawbury, Northolt and Woodvale. Many small fields eg Denham, Kidlington, Barton, Tatenhill, Fairoaks, Elstree, Biggin Hill, Blackbushe survive name basically unchanged. Many RAF Stations and factory airfields have closed with time eg Tern Hill, Andover, White Waltham, Sculthorpe Bovingdon, Abingdon, Driffield, Alconbury, Burtonwood, Woodford, Rearsby, Wisley, Hatfield and Samlesbury. A few that could do with an explanation are: RAF Jurby was in the north of the Isle of Man, while Silloth was north of Workington on the Lake District coast. Even a number of civil airfields, well known in the 60s have long closed and disappeared. A few are in the alternative names table above, one previously unknown to me is Mundde (near Wick). Another little known one is LEC Refrigeration's airfield at Bognor Regis (near Brighton). Any other strange airfield names, drop me a PM and I'll add to this list, or let 'Wikipedia' provide an answer.

Over the years these tables have been the source of much debate. How, and if, certain similar types should be combined, and in whch category aircraft should be placed. One type inparticular that had no clear 'home' was the Heron, not fitting comfortably as an Airliner, nor in with the GA twins! As the 60s developed so new types such as the Islander and Skyvan also provided debate. In the 70s a new group of commuter liners' was made to include these and the Twin Otter, Beech 99 etc. Originally that select group of types, mainly fighter, bomber and trainer types with military origins and no real civilian counterpart were grouped as 'others', now considered 'military designs', here with Mosquito, Invader and Meteor. Military transports/patrol types were happy included as 'Airliners' eg Hastings, Beverley, Shackleton, Belfast, Noratlas etc. These are only a crude measure of how interesting 'spotting' that year was. As the 60's decade progresses the pattern of decline/ increase in numbers of a particular type is interesting to follow, and each year there will be a short commentary in the 'Annual Report' on the main annual trends.

ANNUAL REVIEW OF ACTIVITY – 1960
Much changed during the year, the last of Ministry of Aviation control. During the year some 177,177 passenger were handled, significantly up on 135,701 the previous year. Freight was also up, with 1,606 tons, compared to 675 tons in 1959, while mail added a further 734 tons. There were 8,291 air transport movements. First, information on the changes to scheduled service operations. As I don’t have any 1960 timetables, this first section on regular airline activity does lack detail as to frequency of operation.
AIRPORT TERMINAL & INFRASTRUCTURE
The interior and exterior of the Airport Terminal (the 1939 Art Deco style curved terminal and control tower) changed little during the 1950s, with passenger handling on the ground floor and overnight accommodation and offices on the first floor. Number 1 hangar had been little used since Airwork Ltd departed in 1958 (check). Starways used Hangar 3 off Banks Road, but during the year built and moved into their own larger hangar (No.85) on ground adjacent to Speke Boulevard to the rear of No.2 hangar. Federated Fruit occupied Hangar 50 down towards the River.
BRITISH EUROPEAN AIRWAYS
Nationalised carrier BEA held a near monopoly over the prime domestic and European air routes. At the start of 1960 they operated from Manchester via Speke to both Isle of Man (Ronaldsway) and Belfast (Nutts Corner) direct with Dakota aircraft. From 1st April the ageing Dakotas were replaced by Viscount 701s, a great improvement in quality of service and reliability; however the penalty of using larger equipment was that flights were combined, with Belfast now served via the Isle of Man, rather than direct.
Dakotas: (mostly prior to end of March 1960) G-AGHJ, G- AGHM, G-AGHL, G-AGHS, G-AGHZ, G-AGIU. G-AGJV, G-AGJZ, G-AGNK, G-AGYX, G-AGZB, G-AGZC, G-AGZD, G-AHCV, G-AIWD, G-AJDE, G-AJHY, G-AJIA, G-AJIC, G-AKJH, G-ALCC, G-ALXK, G-ALXL (to Cambrian 3.60), G-ALXM, G-ALYF, G-AMGD, G-AMKE (27) A dozen or more Dakotas in the fleet did not call at Speke in 1960. Viscount 701s: G-ALWF, G-AMNZ, G-AMOA, G-AMOB, G-AMOC, G-AMOD, G-AMOE, G-AMOF, G-AMOG, G-AMOH, G-AMOI, G-AMOJ, G-AMOK, G-AMOL, G-AMOM, G-AMOO, G-ANHA, G-ANHB, G-ANHD, G-ANHE, G-ANHF, G-AOFX (22) G-AMOP did not visit in 1960 (accident Rome 8.60). Plus some V.802 and V.806 Viscount on diversion etc., but only V.701 on Speke schedules.
STARWAYS
The London Air Port (LAP, or today Heathrow) schedule was operated by Dakota aircraft, with a Skymaster available if loads required greater capacity. From 12th October an additional year-round Dakota schedule commenced to Glasgow. During the summer season, services and regular charters operated to the likes of Ostend, Tarbes (for Lourdes), Santander, Palma, Biarritz, Oporto, Rimini, Perpignan and Munich. These summer only routes accounted for some 41,000 passenger in 1960. The fleet increased for summer 1960 to 3 Dakotas and 3 Skymaster aircraft.
Dakotas: G-AMPO, G-AMPY, G-AMSN (3) Skymasters: G-APEZ, G-APIN (ret off lease 4.60), G-APYK (new, del 3.60) (3)
AER LINGUS
Aer Lingus operated Friendships on their Dublin scheduled service, sometime substituted or supplemented by the use of Dakota and Viscount aircraft. During the winter period flights appear to have been twice daily, increasing dramatically at peak summer. A strike grounded Aer Lingus aircraft for two weeks during March, necessitating the leasing-in of Dakota aircraft from Derby Airways, Dan Air and Silver City to cover their flights, as detailed in the March movements. In addition to passenger flights, there were also cargo services, mostly using freight configured Dakotas. The ‘Visiting Aircraft Logs’ have not recorded daily scheduled Friendship and Dakota flights, but as the Viscounts were not scheduled to operate into Liverpool, each (and likely every time) they substituted for a Friendship has been noted, although not which service of the day they were used on.
Aer Lingus held a contract to transport British Sunday newspapers to Dublin from Manchester, During August one Saturday night the flights diverted to Liverpool and were successfully handled. As a result the contract which involved both Aer Lingus, with mostly Dakota and Viscount aircraft and supplemented by B.K.S. usually with either a Dakota or Ambassador aircraft. Contract moved to Speke in mid-November 1960.
Fokker Friendships: EI-AKA, EI-AKB, EI-AKC, EI-AKD, EI-AKE, EI-AKF, EI-AKG (7) Douglas DC-3/C-47 Dakotas: EI-ACD, EI-ACE, EI-AHG, EI-AFA, EI-AFC (5) V.808 Viscount: EI-AJI, EI-AJJ, EI-AJK, EI-AKK, EI-AKL, EI-AKO, EI-ALG (7)
CAMBRIAN
Commencing the summer season around 3rd April, Cambrian ran a several times weekly connection to Cardiff and onto Jersey. During 1960 this service was operated by Dakota aircraft, upgraded from the Heron used in 1959.
Douglas C-47 Dakota: G-AGIP, G-AHCZ, G-ALXL (from BEA 3.60), G-AMFV and G-AMJX (5) By 1960 the Dragon Rapides, Dove and Herons (bar one used on specific service) had all departed from the fleet.
DAN AIR
Dan Air commenced their first scheduled service, using de Havilland Dove aircraft between Bristol and Liverpool from 4th April, initially on a Monday and Friday only.
DH.104 Doves: G-AIWF, G-ALVF (2) Also at times Dakotas: G-AMSS, G-AMSU, plus visits by Bristol Freighters and an Ambassador charter flight.
BKS AIR SERVICE
The great innovation of 1960 was the first scheduled Irish Sea car ferry service, connecting Liverpool and Dublin. The service commenced on 25th April for the summer season, initially at a frequency of daily, rising to 4 return trips at the height of the summer season. The season likely ended during October 1960.
From 11th November frequently sent a Dakota or an Ambassador on a Saturday evening to supplement the Aer Lingus Sunday edition newspaper uplift. A contract that lasted for a year.
Bristol 170 Freighter: G-AILW plus loan of G-AHJD and visits by G-AMLJ, also visits by their Dakota and Ambassador aircraft on charters and towards the end of the year on Sunday morning’s newspaper freight flights.
FEDERATED AIR TRANSPORT
Speke based “Feds” operated a Dragon Rapide and two Anson aircraft on ‘mushroom’ flights and other general freight work throughout the year. In January and February due to a shortage of their own aircraft some flights were operated using Skycraft’s Dragon Rapide G-ALBA. Their own Dragon Rapide G-ANZP was retired in October from freight work to become the personal aircraft of R.Gates, the company owner.
Avro Anson: G-ALXC, G-AMBE (ret off lease 1.60) (2) DH Dragon Rapide: G-ANZP (1), plus occasional use of leased-in G-ALBA.
CHARTER FLIGHTS
There were many charter airlines at the time, with a great number of ‘one-off’ charters operated, many short inclusive tours to Holland and Belgium, others with ship’s crew changes, some with freight. Just who aircraft were operating for has faded and wasn’t recorded by us at the time. Many of the charters that served Norway, and some to/from Rotterdam , Amsterdam or Antwerp were likely transporting a change of crew for ships at the Docks. Doves, Herons, Dakotas and Vikings were frequently to be seen, with a few Skymasters, Viscounts, Commandos and even the first Douglas DC-6 to call at Liverpool to add variety. British Airlines most involved in regular charters to the Continent were Silver City and Derby Airways. A fair number of charters were also operated by Fred Olsen and Braathens SAFE, both Norwegian Airlines, while towards the end of the year Martin’s Air Charter put in several appearances (later to be renamed Martinair). The most notable airline operating charters was Polish National carrier LOT, with a Convair Cv.240 and an Iluyshin IL-14, these too were probably with a change of ship’s crew. A UAT inbound charter brought in a DC-6, while Interocean and Seven Seas provided interest with their Skymasters, and Aviameer and Airnautic visited once each with Vikings.
Although football was a great spectator sport, the teams did not have the great financial support they have today. Indeed in 1960 LFC was still in the (then) Second Division. While there were trips into Europe by air later in the 60s, road and rail transported the teams and away supporters around Britain – although it could be that an occasional charter was football related, but which have now faded from memory.
Lourdes Charters do not appear in the Visiting Aircraft Logs for 1960, likely because Starways, as a Liverpool based airline operated any charters and ran regular I/T flights during the summer season to Tarbes for Lourdes Pilgrims. Such activity by resident aircraft was not recorded at the time.
DIVERSIONS
With a still short main runway and no GCA radar, plus relatively quiet airways in 1960, fog and snow tended to ground all flights, with not that many requiring to divert. There are just 29 arrivals in 1960 noted as ‘weather’ diversions, plus a fair few diversions by light aircraft and a couple of airliners with engine ‘tech’ problems. Most exciting were a Dan Air York and a KLM Convair Cv.340 likely on weather divert from Manchester, and an Eagle Viking diverting in from Dublin. With engine trouble came a USN Dakota, while a French Air Force Invader was a weather diversion from Warton.
MILITARY
The year got off to a good start with a French Air Force B-26 Invader diverting in. However much more frequent were Ansons, Pembrokes, Devons, Valettas, Varsity and Hastings aircraft of the RAF, along with UAS Chipmunks from Woodvale. The Royal Canadian Air Force visited a couple of times with their Dakotas, while towards the end of the year there were several USAF Dakotas visiting, possibly using Speke as the US presence at Burtonwood was being run-down. Unusual was a DHC-2 Beaver of the USAF in November. The US Navy called in May, the R4D-8 (C-117D Dakota) aircraft diverting in with engine trouble and subsequent aircraft in connection with this. Finally the Irish Air Corps Dove aircraft visited on a number of occasions, and two P.56 Provost aircraft were delivered through Speke, including the final P.56 Provost built.
GENERAL AVIATION
In 1960 the rules regarding import to the UK of new American built general aviation twins and singles was relaxed. The main Piper importer, Vigors Ltd (shortly to become CSE Aviation) imported many of their aircraft via the Republic of Ireland and can be traced in the logs either on delivery to the UK or passing back and forth across the Irish Sea. A number of Beech, Cessna and Piper designs which were destined to become common, first visited during 1960. There were though still many Auster, Percival and Miles types about, although their domination of the British skies was about to be eclipsed.
There were many Dragon Rapides, DH Dove and Herons in service with a variety of small charter operators, most notable of which was Morton Air Services. Another regular was Westair Flying Services from Blackpool with their Dragon Rapides. A number of well-known companies operated a company aircraft and are shown in the Logs: Fox’s Glacier Mints, English Electric, Vickers, Short Bros & Harland, Pressed Steel, John Liang Construction, Ind Coope and Standard Motors being some.
In 1960 helicopter movements were rare, there being just 3 different machines seen during the year at Speke, both types the Sycamore and Widgeon both being British built, but helicopters too were soon to be dominated by US built types.
SUMMARY OF THE YEAR’S ACTIVITY – AIRCRAFT & TYPES
A total of 377 aircraft, of 53 different types visited Liverpool/Speke Airport during the year. Out of the 53 types, no less than 11 were new! In addition, Aztecs and Debonairs also made their first visits, but are counted with Apache and Bonanza types being somewhat similar. The first DC-6 was a welcome addition to the list, while the IL-14 was somewhat unexpected, the York though proved to be a final visit of type. The Commando was an unusual type and at last an Ambassador has come to Speke, and have since become a familiar sight. The significant increase in American built light-planes evident, now that the Government has ended its import ban. British types still dominate in 1960. Significant GA types to first-visit in 1960 were the Beech Travel Air, Beech Queen Air, Mooney M.20 and aircraft from Avions Jodel n France. Types that had visited in 1959 that did not repeat in 1960 included the Hermes, Noratlas, Twin Pioneer, Dragon, Mosquito, Meteor and Bell 47. A number of single engine types that were only ever around in the 60s in small numbers also did not visit. Fuller details on the tables above.
SUMMARY OF THE YEAR’S ACTIVITY – AIRLINES & NATIONALITIES
In all 31 operators that can be classed as ‘Airlines’ operating Vikings, Dakotas or larger aircraft visited during the year. British Operators being: Air Condor, BEA, BKS, BUA, Cambrian, Channel, Continental, Dan-Air, Derby, Don Everall, Eagle, Jersey, Mortons, Orion, Overseas, Pegasus, Scottish, Silver City, Skyways and Starways. While from elsewhere around the globe: Aer Lingus (Eire), Airnautic (France), Aviomeer (Belgium), Braathens (Norway), Fred Olsen (Norway), Interocean (Luxembourg), KLM (Netherlands), LOT (Poland), Martin’s Air Charter (Netherlands), Seven Seas (USA), and UAT (France).
Aircraft came in the National markings of 14 countries: D, EI, F, G, HB, LN, LX, N, OK, OO, OY, PH, SP, VR-N. Of note no aircraft from Spain or Sweden during 1960. There were 56 foreign civilian aircraft visiting in 1960, while there were 270 from the British G- register.
Military aircraft came from 7 Air Arms of 5 Nations: Canada (RCAF), France (FAF), Eire (IAC), UK (RAF & RN) and the U.S.A. (USAF and USN). There were 51 military serials noted in 1960, although not all RAF Anson or Chipmunk aircraft visits were able to be identified by registration.
RESIDENTS LISTING 1960
Full list on table. Up from 12 aircraft (of which two were out on lease) on 1.1.60; to 19 aircraft on 31.12.60 aircraft; with 21 resident aircraft at some stage in the year, plus 2 operationally based and a further 2 non-flying resident aircraft.
As can be seen the number of resident aircraft near doubled during the year, with a notable increase in privately owned singles – a trend that continued through the 60s decade. The resident flying school, The Merseyside and North Wales Flying Group sold their Auster and purchased a Tiger Moth. Resident airline Starways increased their fleet by a Skymaster, while Federate Fruit were in their last full year of operation. Greatest increase was in the number of GA single-engine types owned by individuals.

CREDITS & COPYRIGHT
As already stated, the original recording in 1960 was the painstaking work of Phil Butler. However this Review was helped by a summary of annual activity created by Tony Williams in 1976 for MAS ‘Flypast’ magazine. This electronic version, with extended notes and greater detail, produced by Brian Jones, between October 2014 and December 2015, with assistance from Phil Butler.
It is anticipated that this should NEVER be copied as a whole, other than for personal reference (for which the Excel version would be much superior) and certainly should NEVER be cut and pasted in its entirety or major part elsewhere on the net. If small amounts of information are extracted for use on the web, then due credit should be given to Phil Butler, Brian Jones and nwan forum.

MY COMMENT
Well this thread I consider is very much in the 'love it' or 'ignore it' category.
I have material nearly ready (missing just the final 'Annual Report' section), for much of the 1960's decade - currently preparing the second quarter of 1968 visitors log. However by the then the visiting aircraft log is three times longer than that for 1960! It is my intention to try add a year every 3 to 4 weeks, probably add 1961 in the quiet 'Twixmas' period.
Hope those interested find these detail examinations of times past of fascination.
Eventually I'll gather photos for 1960 together from other posts in this section of nwan forum to illustrate 1960 movements. However do feel free to add your comments, memories, photos, timetables etc for 1960, and get them ready for 1961 for when the thread is posted.
Any queries, or corrections (in posts this size there are bound to be a couple) let me know by PM or as a post.

Well I LOVE it!! This is a true labour of love and I very much appreciate the hard work that has gone into this. Thank you!
I started spotting at Speke in about 1958 having had my first flight with Harry Patterson in the Fox Moth. Then I worked in the tower in the late 60s before being posted elsewhere. I am so looking forward to being reminded of the rest of the decade. You are bringing back so many wonderful memories.
Thanks again!

I fully echo those sentiments - fantastic, thank you.
For us here on the Isle of Man it provides a welcome insight to the Isle of Man / Jurby activities during the year, moreso because some idiot threw out some 15 years worth of Ronaldsway Airport movement records. We are particularly delighted to see how active the Jurby Station Flight Anson TX226 was, and this airframe still exists, dismantled in storage with the Classic Air Force.
On a more personal note, in 1960 I was still a trainee aircraft spotter up in Newcastle, and probably saw (but was not yet recording) many of the Liverpool - Newcastle movements that you have listed. Also to RAF Ouston. By 1962 I was keeping proper logs, and many of 'your' 1960 aircraft were still active and recorded by me. Sadly though, many of the older types had retired by 1962.
Oh for a time machine! I'd go straight back to 1960 with a decent camera!
P.S. One small typo - you refer to Sunderland / Unsworth - it was actually Usworth.

Thanks Richard and 'Acklington'. Have corrected Usworth, whoops! Thanks.
The RAF Jurby Station Flight Anson movements continue in 1961 and 1962 logs - indeed even changes of the based aircraft get recorded through the Speke Logs.

I'll second that, Ron. lots of memory-joggers there for me, who started spotting at around that time. I have some photos to back up the logs and will try to dig them out when this 'ere Christmas thing has passed.

Brian, a huge thank you for undertaking this quite daunting task of archiving Phil Butler's logs. I "only" started visiting the balcony in 1963-64, so will really look forward to future years being archived too. We are VERY fortunate to have people like PHB and yourself to provide us all with this glimpse into the past. I believe Phil would collate all the logs in the Landings Office, which was opposite the old British Eagle check-in desks. Whenever I could, I would spend every minute I could pouring over Phil's logs on a Saturday afternoon down at the MSAE clubhouse. Thus started a life-long passion with aviation for me, which ultimately culminated in a very enjoyable career in the industry. So these archives will be very much "going back to my roots."
