To resurrect an old thread.
In speke image51 I always assumed that the floodlights illuminated the the inverted triangles at the edge of the "Burma Road" which were to show the obstacle clearance limit for aircraft landing on runway 17. There was a line of approach lights with (I think) one crossbar.
