Hi, I was travelling to a job last Friday in Frodsham so I made my way along the m57 from switch island Aintree to the end of Knowsley Expressway. On the way I counted 15 Sparrowhawks there are usually one or two around Stockbridge/Knowsley Hall but it seemed that there has been a population boom in recent times. I travel the M57 most days and not noticed that many before. I suppose that there could be several reasons but I could not help thinking it may be down to extensive building works of warehouses around the area of the motorway is forcing out its prey or the Farmers are busy at the mo and disturbing things enough to encourage a reconnaissance sortie. There were 2 within a quarter mile at the carriageway edge behind Asda Aintree. Perhaps its something to do with hot days such as that and maybe the rising heat currents from the motorway surface provides some additional lift to exploit. Amazing how they soar effortlessly on the thermals, an unmistakeable OTT spot with their mottled underside and huge span.
On the same day I ended up in Telford where I noticed a squadron of swifts (straight out of natures skunkworks) playing mach loop/bandits at 2 oclock screeching away as they dodged each other at unbelieveable rates of turn and speed in the dive.
Not seen any here yet though, 212 Africa squadron are usually over my garden every year without fail a sure sign summer is on the way.
