Did anyone else note how gleefully the BBC announced(twice) last night that Liverpool airport was closed due to snow. Did not notice such a BIG FUSS WHEN mCR CLOSED.

Yes, I noticed that. It was the stop press item on NATIONAL news and then BBC North West rubbed it in later. The difference between the Liverpool news item and the closure the previous day of Manchester airport was marked. The Manchester story got all the positive spins it could - 'passengers coping, airlines handling the situation etc etc" - with an airport spokesman smiling benignly. There was nothing positive about the Liverpool story and I just wonder what the airport, and the city in general, has to do to get a fair crack of the whip from the media.

I think one of the main reasons last night was that BBC Look Northwest reporter, Lisa McCalister just happened to be aboard a RYR 737 which taxied out to the runway and was forced to taxi back in again when the snow took a hold, so they had a couple of photos she'd taken (of the night-stopping KLM F70) plus her on-the-spot report (I think she was only going home for Christmas).
I have to say I saw plenty of coverage of "Stranded" passengers at Manchester on TV news a few days ago when they got the heavy snow.

Liverpoolman1, I wouldn't worry too much because Manchester as a city has a major inferiority complex and needs all the help it can get. Liverpool is now a world-class city with a wonderful waterfront and impressive architecture from many eras. No wonder tourists are flocking in from all over Europe. It is proven that Ryanair and easyJet are not just taking Brits out; it is a two-way flow. In contrast, I was in Manchester recently and - Piccadilly Gardens apart - got the impression that it was just a bunch of building near a grotty canal.

Hmm. I dont want to turn this thread into a Manchester v Liverpool slanging match, but I feel as someone living in Manchester and working throughout the NW, I have to respond. There is more to a city than an impresive waterfront, if you drive around Liverpool you'll see that for yourself. I see more run down areas in Liverpool than anywhere else. Inferiority complex?? not sure where you get that from. Bigger airport, bigger football team. Instead of having a go at Mancs, complain to the BBC if you feel they are biased.

Point taken, CloudWarrior, but I was really talking about the city centres. My post was a little tongue-in-cheek. Merry Christmas!

Wasn't that the reason why those from the cobbled end of the East Lancs built the Ship Canal so as to 'compete' with Liverpool?

Don't know what your all worrying about. Sounds like it got a whole load of free publicity. I hope they mentioned a few of the places we fly too and showed lots of coverage of our ultra modern facilities. Including the hotel, should they be stranded over night. Lets also be thankful that our airports closure is now worthy of national news (stop press) coverage as a few years ago it would only get local coverage a day or so later.

;D I only wish.LOL
All publicity is good publicity--but unlike Ringway we did not have the happy photos of an international airport coping well with a minor problem--just gleeful announcements lest we think somehow Liverpool airport has been efficient enough not to have the Mcr problems
It would have been nice to see an airport full of delayed but unstressed international passengers awaiting their ride to all those exotic places but then the media is not based in Liverpool but in some place else.
Those who read Airliner World may also detect the same problem.

The airport is still not accepting diverts (except in emergencies) until 18:00hrs tonight at the earliest. It's to be hoped that the necessary supplies of de-icer and equipment can be sorted quickly as many of the airports in the south east are under threat of heavy snow from later this afternoon until tomorrow. Dublin was also closed this morning due snow. The potential for aircraft needing to divert over the next 24 hours could be high - it would be nice to know we were in a position to accept some diverts (though I appreciate our own flights should have priority).

The airport is still not accepting diverts (except in emergencies) until 18:00hrs tonight at the earliest. Most of the airports in the UK are accepting only limited or emergency diversions at this time. On Wednesday night the BA MAD-LHR ended up at up at Edinburgh and the BA238 from Boston at Glasgow.
