I see that Ceefax has not presented any flight arrivals for LJLA for the past three days. At a time of delays, diversions, snow and fog it is just when such a service is at its most valuable. Anyone any idea why it is not appearing?

As from the ceefax site:
'We are working on technical issues, this service is temporary not up-to-date.'
Thanks!

Does Ceefax still exist then? Can't get it on our telly since the digital switch over. Doesn't appear on our Virgin Media BBC channels. The BBC "red button" info is not so easy to navigate and can take ages to load compared to how Ceefax was.

Yes, it's still there. Go to page 440 for Flight Arrivals, then select North West and it brings up the option to select LPL, MAN or IOM, only problem being that the LPL info has not been fully updated since 19 Dec and it then disappeared altogether 3 days ago. I guess all the BBC techies on still on their Christmas break.

Thanks for that, but Ceefax is no longer available on my Virgin Media TV package. I cannot go to page 440 (or any otrher pages). Pressing the "text" buton on the digital channels comes up with "Text not available" in grey at the bottom of the screen. The alternative "red button" takes much longer to load than the almost instant Ceefax used to and it is quicker just to check the LPL webpage on the computer for arr/deps. I have navigated to the page on bbci via Home, Travel, Flight Info, North west and, what I assume would be the LPL page just states "no content", so they are obviously having the same problem. Having Googled Ceefax, I found this article from another part of the country that lost Ceefax in September (ours went in December). www.guardian.co.uk/culture/2009/sep/14/leo-hickman-ceefax Just about sums up my thoughts on it too. Cheers, Dave

Strange, our Sky+ box gives almost instant access to the pages when selected. Must admit, the 10 year old box it replaced did take an age.

Hi Dave
Virgin Media - press home then slect 7 then 2 then 3. Scroll to flight arrivals, press and pick which airport. Takes about 20 seconds to load once you know the number sequence.

Dave
Ceefax was the BBC name for their analogue text service, with ITV holding the rights to use the name Teletext for theirs. Ceefax will disappear completely from all UK screens once the digital switchover has been completed in 2012.
However, like the Banjo Player, I have no problem getting the BBC's replacement text service. I simply use the text button on my remote. It loads instantly and I can reach the NW page of flight arrivals on p.440 within 10 secs. Don't need to press the red button at all. All page numbers seem to match the previous Ceefax pages. I am merely using a TV with built-in Freeview through an aerial on my roof in Bromborough.
However, I also have another TV connected to a dish via a Freesat box and that will only provide text through the red button service which is indeed far slower and does not seem to have a Travel News section. Using this system and searching for p.440 brings up "page not found". I'm guessing that your Virgin service is cabled.

Mark Hi Mark, Thanks for that - you learn something new everyday!! That is certainly much quicker than the bbci red button. Looks like the different Freeview/Sat/Cable services differ quite a bit judging by the various replies. We do indeed have a Virgin Media package of cable tv, land line telephone and broadband internet. My original point stands re "Ceefax" though, this is fast becoming a thing of the past as the digital switchover happens. Yes it looked dated, but it worked pretty quickly. Much appreciated Cheers, Dave

The TV text service for LPL arrivals is page 463.
You can access this by keying in the page number and the the select button on the remote via the text button or the red button on all the BBC channels.

As per the discussion above - some digital tv packages do not offer a teletext service using text buttons and page numbers...Virgin Media for one certainly does not. The service is accessible via "Home" and "Interactive" as I have just learned today from markmai. The pages are not numbered.

Well my system has a Digital ready TV and a Sky receiver and they both can access the designated LPL page of 463 via the keypad.

So, thanks to our readers many who could not access LJLA on Ceefax or its new equivalent can now do so. However that does not answer my initial question as to why there is currently a complete lack of information regarding LJLA on the system. All the other UK airports are represented there so what is wrong? Is it an information gathering or an input problem at LJLA? The airport is missing an opportunity to keep itself up there with the big boys. More to the point, with a blank screen it is showing itself as being unable to keep pace with the tiddlers!

This is becoming a matter of concern. It has gone on for longer than one would expect. Surely there is an explanation for this lack of information? As I said in my initial posting it is at times of severe weather, delays and diversions that up-to-date information is most urgently required. Not everyone is on the Internet so does not have, like us, access to the airport's arrival and departure message board. Conversely, everyone has access to TV so should be able to access Ceefax in some form. It's about time the airport sorted it out - being off-air since 27 December is not acceptable.
