Owensy. The tours are organised by a Forum member and a lot are "advertised" so to speak on the forum. I am sure he will put future ones on aswell if there are places to fill. Regards Beemer.

Some nice photos there Chris. Seems like the Air Force has more frames in storage than they have on the front line! I didn't realise they had any F3's stored i thought they were just retired to Leeming and scrapped. Nimrods next then?
How do you get access to the assault gliders collection of bits and pieces?
Cheers
Shaun

I was surprised to see so many Gazelles in store, when the Army have been looking for ways of transporting men in Afghistan to save so many being blown up. OK, I know they are small and limited, but to have them in store when they could be used for comms or observation seems daft. (Of course, maybe they are waiting there for parts or software which may be coming along in 15 years time.)

The Gazelles are now fairly old and lack defensive and offensive armament. To send them to Afganistan would be no different to sending standard Land Rovers. While all are marked 'for sale' onto the civilian market, recent sales are for spares as the cost of checks/overhaul to civilian standards is high, as are operating costs. Also I have a dim recollection of reading some time ago that the Gazelle, which was designed in the Cold War for operations on the German Plains was not that good when it came to 'hot and high' desert operations. Note that there are no retired Lynx in store at Shawbury, although much the same age, they have been updated in service and possess considerable battlefield fire-power, even though replaced in the front-line by the Apache. The February edition of 'Aircraft' has a picture (p.10) of some of 22 former Shawbury, ex RAF Tucanos now owned by civilian organisation in the USA. First to be civilianised by RS Warbirds of Phoenix, Arizona (at Deer Valley Municipal Airport, Phoenix) being ZF168/N868RS, ZF200/N822RS, ZF136/N885RS. www.rswarbirds.com

Thanks for the reply Viscount. I am surprised at what exactly is to be seen at Shawbury. Its a far more interesting place than ever I gave it credit for. RT

Although the Tucano's have been sold to the States, in 2 batches, none are yet flying, although they have all been registered. It is likely that none will ever fly due to the fact that they have been dismantled for transport. When they are re-assembled it is impossible ( or at least very difficult) to get the wing mated to the fuselage correctly. they never fly right again.

I will bet they do not fly straight. The plan was for some of the latest batch was to fly over on delivery, but it never happened. The shimming of the fuselage /wing is never the same on rebuild. They were not jig built, every aircraft is different, but its nice to know that they are airborne again.
