Photographed at Upper Heyford in 1987,this variant is a EC-130H 'Compass Call' Electronic Countermeasures platform,which was based at Sembach,Germany.Items of note are the aerial array connected to the fin,and the extra inlets just in front of the udercarriage bulge,to provide extra cooloing for the electronics suite.

elevation 76 I know exactly where that field is ;D Knew the Swede was in Lyneham but couldn't get down to the trials The last shots I took of XV197, November 2008. I believe she is now wfu at Boscombe Down.

Re "somewhere in Wiltshire", I have seen a C-130 at Deptford Down, a small grass field on top of a small Hill, just inside Danger area D123, although I must admit, those photos do not look like the same place. Seems altogether bigger and more open. If not Deptford it will be somewhere else within the hinterland of Salisbury plain. Whilst flying in Wiltshire I have been passed by C-130s flying beneath me, overtaking from behind, thankfully with prior warnng from Lyneham ATC.
This is a great thread and shows the versatility and success of this wonderful aircraft. RT

Although this has been primarily a pictoral thread (and an absolutely excellent one at that), my big Hercules memory could not be photographed!
While I think I once related this on the former xsorbit BB, it is worthy of repetition.
Sometime (early 90s, maybe late 80s) I had been at Valley, then moved down to camp at Caernarfon, in the caravan site right on the 26 threshold. At around 10pm, as I left the club house after a meal, there was a great thrashing noise. Immediately the thought 'absolutely impossible', then 'Hercules', then 'absolutely impossible' again entered my head and I made my way to the gate and the lane down to the threshold as quick as I could on a dark cloudy night. As I reached abeam the threshold, it quickly became apparant that while the air was full of Hercules thrumming, I could see absolutely nothing - despite knowing that I was almost at touching distance from the aircraft. No runway lighting at Caernarfon, the tower was black, no stobes or rotating anti-collision beacons, no powerful landing lights, not even any cockpit glow - just the loud engine noise - then ever so slowly a single red wingtip light passed high in an arc though my line of vision then a dark wedge against the sky denoted the tail, as the Hercules performed a 180 to backtrack 08. Quite an erie experience. A Chinook, again identified purely from the wokka, wokka of the blades landed, then both departed. Must be the only time as a spotter that I logged a single light of an aeroplane, without ever seeing the aeroplane! Both returned after midnight, the Hercules overshooting before landing this time.
Quite a testament to then newly installed Night Vision (NVG) technology and the performance of the Hercules. Caernarfon is not the longest or broadest of runways, coupled with a shingle bank hazard at one end and trees at the other (this was before the cross runway was reinstated).
I often wonder though, what the pilots thought of a single bright infra-red figure pointing a monocular at them in the dead of a dark night in the middle of nowhere.

Saw my very first Herc around 1957 over the Wirral southbound at about 2,000ft. It was a C-130A with red Arctic rescue markings on fin and outer wings. Probably out of Burtonwood on a demo flight. I have the serial and date somewhere.
