I hope we can see the removal of portacabins and the provision of more permanant structures. A southerly terminal extension would be logical, the old mail sorting building could be removed to allow for development. A couple of airbridges would be nice to attract trans-international carriers.

Starways Where have you seen the announcement?
geeforce I too hope that we can see the provision of more permanent structures. Puzzled by the reference to a southerly extension - onto the apron? or to use the hangers? The area described (old mail sorting building) is to the west of the terminal!!!!

Wouldn't hold your breath over removal of all the portacabins just yet. Report mentioned new security search area, improvements to arrivals and some changes to the retail facilities. My guess would be a permanent but probably single storey extension (as has happened at Bristol recently) accommodaitng a new search area and additional baggae reclaim belts. I wonder whether the relocation of the Premium Parking facility is anything to do with the proposed works? There's a nice site now available for an extension to the east....

What is needed is a new bigger, better, grander entrance into the terminal for arriving passengers off the apron.

Might work, but you'd risk losing too much in terms of apron space /stands.
I reckon that in the current market £12 million would buy you about 6000m2 of good quality terminal space - put in context that's probably about a 25% increase in the floor area of the 'new' terminal (i.e. the bit built in 2001).

You would lose no apron space because its part of the building as it is now.
What we have is a small pokey entrance that, as the airport gets bigger, will put people off flying if they have to stand and queue outside.

The benefits would be very limited IMHO as the current arrivals area entrance is surrounded either side by baggage conveyors which need access maintaining. You could do some minor improvements but they wouldn't solve the poor layout / congestion inside caused by the convergence of Easyjet and Ryanair pax from opposite ends of the building. It needs something on a larger scale (which a £12m investment would suggest?)
I am curious that no written confirmation (i.e. press release) seems to have surfaced yet which may give more details - the Radio Merseyside report remains the only source i've seen (heard).

Last 0927 (usually correct as no speculation used) reported Robin Tudor as saying nothing new for 18 months or so in view of the credit crisis, only finishing off current projects and tidying up things.

A mail from Robin Tudor has confirmed that the airport will be "issuing a press release and outlining the plans shortly"
No detail of timescales - plans might well be for the distant future.

I think the announcement about the £12m terminal investment was made early than Peel had intended. Radio Merseyside had contacted the airport to get a comment on news that day that Which magazine readers had voted LPL 23rd out of 38 in a poll that sought to establish the best passenger experience at the various UK airports.
The MD, Andy Gower, came on in response to the survey and after commenting that Peel were always seeking to improve passenger facilities that added the £12m comment in support of this. I do not think there was any mention of when the work would commence.
Personally, although I read "Which", I find some of their surveys are hardly worth the paper they are written on. In this particular survey BLK was voted "Best Airport", whilst Peel's DSA came third. I think both these airports might have been happier with more passengers instead.
Last year Which did a similar readers survey on Airlines which put Palmair, an airline with just one aircraft, on top. Palmair have now ceased trading. Even Globespan got plaudits from Which readers, so they can't have many subscribers in this area!

Wash your mouth out foxecho
Palmair HAVE NOT ceased trading.
The 737-200 aircraft they used last year and for several years prior, was owned and operated by European Air Charter, who have ceased trading.
This year's aircraft has been rumored to be being provided by several airlines, however their flights for this summer all have an "LS" prefix, so it looks like Jet2 are operating them.

Wash your mouth out foxechoPalmair HAVE NOT ceased trading. Until last December the Aircraft Operators Licence was held by European Air Charter Aviation Ltd (EAL), trading as Palmair Aviation. EAL then ceased trading. Before EAL, the Palmair flights were operated by Flightline Ltd trading as Palmair Aviation. Flightline Ltd also ceased trading. Palmair does indeed still exist but it is now a trading name of R E Bath Travel Service (Palmair) Ltd. This company holds an ATOL but not an AOC. They therefore rely on the AOC of their chosen charter airline, which as you say, is currently Jet2. Hope this claries any confusion. But all this is really drifting away from the original thread topic on the LPL terminal!

Correct.
Glad to see that you have accepted that Palmair have not ceased trading. Palmair has always been, for many years, a trading name of R E Bath Travel Service (Palmair) Ltd.
The last thing people need in the present economic mess, is mis-information.

I understand that the planning application covering the esterly extension of the terminal building and link to the new security search area in the converted Hangar 1 has been submitted to Liverpool City Council. Site notices advising of the application should be appearing anytime now...
