With the demise of Monarch it got me thinking of all the airlines which I have flown who no longer exist.
My very first flight was by BEA from Liverpool to the Isle of Man and back in 1959 in a Pioneer (DC3). OK they still sort of exist as British Airways.
My next flight was by Britannia and again it has been rebranded several times now.
Going back to those no longer in existence.
Invicta. Flew in a Vickers Vangaurd - Lpl to Rotterdam.
Calidonian. Man - Ibiza BAC 1/11, Gatwick - Orlando. DC10-30
Dan Air. Man - Alicante B707-300 / Comet. Gat - Mykonos B737-200
Orion. Gat -Crete B737-200
Capital. Glasgow- Leeds S360
Brymon. Heathrow - Plymouth return via Newquay Dash7
Airtours. Stansted - Berlin, Stan - Vienna MD87
My-Travel. Stan - Palma, Stan- Reus MD83
Canadian Pacific. Man - Toronto DC8-63/B747-200
Continential. Gat - Houston DC10-30, Hou - Los Angeles A300, LA - Honolulu B747-200, Hon - San Francisco B747-200, San Fran-Newark B747-200
Peoples Express New - Gat B747-200
Pacific South Western LA -Las Vegas 146-100
Air UK. Stansted - Leeds F27
Air UK Leisure. Stan - Palma B737-300
Leisure International. Stan - Orlando B767-300
European. Gat - Sanford B747-200
Air Europe. Stan/Man - Bangor/Orlando B757-200(this flight was delayed at Stan for 5 hours whilst the airline looked for a navagation bulb. Eventually one was found at Man and the aircraft diverted there so it could be fitted for the transatlantic flight. It then landed in Bangor, Maine to refuel and so the passengers could clear customs and immigration.)
Gat - Bangor - Orlando -Acapulco B757-200
Tower Air. Acapulco - Orlando - Gat. B747-200
Viasa. Heathrow - Orly - Margarita DC10-30
BIA. Gat - Ajaccio 1/11-500. Only 10 passengers on the outward flight and about 25 coming back. It didn't even appear on the departure board? No wonder they went bust a few months later.
Go. Stan- Edinburgh x3 B737-300
Travel City. Gat - Sanford B747-200
British Airtours. Gat - Faro Tristar 100
Monarch. Birmingham - Kefalonia B757-200, Gat.- Rhodes A300, Gat - Dalaman B757-200, Gat - Zante B757-200, Birmingham - Palma B757-200
I also remember a flight from Stan to Palma which should have been operated by U.K. leisure but was operated by B737-300 from a Sth American airline which by the time we came back two weeks later was registered as a Portuguese airline, but same plane.
I'm sure that there are a few more but the log book I used has gone missing for some years in the house somewhere.
Looking at the list I'm sure there's a moral there. Don't start an airline! Too risky?
It might have been easier to list the ones still flying.
