Nord 260
A word of introduction to explain the identities shown here. Both the Armee de l'Air (French Air Force) and Aeronavale (French Navy) use the maufacturers' constructors number as a serial. The operating unit allocate a serial, as a radio call-sign. The Armee de l'Air display the 'last two' of this serial externally on the aircraft as a code, the Aeronavale do not. The radio call-sign serial links to the operating unit. F-RBA*, F-RBO* and F-SDM* are all Armee de l'Air units, F-YDA*, F-YDC*, F-YDD*, F-YDO* are Aeronavale.
Rarely is it known whether military visits are training flights, communications flights delivering/collecting personel/packages, or uploading fuel while on a training or communications flight.
The identity of aircraft visiting were gathered from a number of sources. Visually by enthusiasts, landing (tower) records, refuelling sheets, movement records at airport of origin/destination. At times these different sources conflicted or at least confused, eg see 1982, 1985 and 1994.
Number presented (*) is the number of different airframes in the year, (R) shows a record year, (R=) equals an earlier record year.
1969 (1)
The first visit of the Nord 262 was on 18th November 1969, when an Armee de l'Air example
No.46, F-RBOC routed from and to Paris/Villacoublay
1970 (3R)
The next Nord 262 would be the aircraft that visited most often. After having a number of types demonstrated to them, including the Twin Otter and Beech 99, Dan Air opted for a single Nord 262 for their 'Link City' service.
G-AYFR first visited on 3rd July, routing from Newcastle to Cardiff. The frequency and exact routing of the scheduled service varied season to season. Two further visitors were both military aircraft.
No.44, F-RBOA on 16th November and
No.53, F-RBOF on 28th November, Both operated from and to Paris/Villacoublay.
1971 (1)
Sole Nord 262 of the year was Dan Air's
G-AYFR on frequent scheduled service on the 'Link City' service.
1972 (1)
Again the sole Nord 262 of the year was Dan Air's
G-AYFR on scheduled flights. Early in the year the 'Link City' service was upgraded to HS.748s and the Nord 262 returned to Aerospatiale during February 1972.
1973 (0)
1974 (2)
Two civilian examples visited during 1974 within a fortnight. Cimber Air operated
OY-BCO on 31st May from Aberdeen and out to Billund, Denmark. On 10th June,
F-BPNY operated by TAT Rousseau Aviation, arrived from Bordeaux, routing onto Glasgow, presumably for an en route fuel uplift, but there is no mention of why this aircraft visited in the contemporary magazines.
1975 (1)
Aeronavale
No.53, F-YDAQ on 9th November, routed from Lorient to Kinloss. The sharp eyed will note that No.53 had visited earlier, in 1970, with the Armee de l'Air - this was one of several aircraft transfered to the Aeronavale, this one during October 1971.
1976 (0)
[glow=red,2,300]1977[/glow] (1)
On Friday 1st July, Aeronavale
No.72, F-YDOZ called on a training flight routing from Edinburgh/Turnhouse to Birmingham/Elmdon.
1978 (3R=)
On Wednesday 17th May two Aeronavale aircraft visited both routing Lorient to Lossiemouth, presumably calling for fuel.
No.60, F-YDAB and
No.45, F-YDAL. A few days later, on 23rd May, two Aeronavale aircraft called, this time from Lossiemouth to Lorient. While it may have been reasonable to assume it would have been the same two aircraft returning, one was different! They were
No.85, F-YDAA and a repeat visit by
No.45, F-YDAL.
1979 (1)
The Armee de l'Air returned, for the first time since 1970. On 1st August 1979 with Nord 262D
No.93, F-RBAP, presumably coded 'AP' though this was not commented on at the time. With flight number 'FM0510' routed from Villacoublay through to Amsterdam, so presumably collected fuel here.
1980 (2)
Armee de l'Air
No.68/AC, operated by GAEL called twice during January, on Thursday 10th from Prestwick to Amsterdam, with call-sign FM0530, and a week later on Thursday 17th Paris/Villacoublay to Amsterdam, with flight number 'FM0540'. Aeronavale
No.72, which was first seen at Speke in 1977, called again on Wednesday 6th February, from Amsterdam to Luton with flight number 'FA058'.
1981 (3R=)
Early in the year, Aeronavale
No.53 on Wednesday 21st January performed a touch and go while en route Rotterdam to Dublin as 'FA057'. Two Armee de l'Air examples followed later in the year,
No.68/AC, F-RBAC on Monday 23rd March, routing from Villacoublay to Amsterdam as 'FM0511', with the Unit given as CoTAM. Towards the end of the year,
No.107/AX, F-RBAX on Wednesday 16th December, at Liverpool 1020-1110, from Villacoublay and on to Amsterdam as 'FM0515'.
1982 (6R)
First two Nord 262s of the year were both civil registered.
F-BVFJ called on Thursday 29th April wearing Air Limousin colours and titles, but operating on a TAT flight number as IO4408. At Liverpool from 1115, when it arrived from Gatwick until 1430 when it left for Newcastle. No operator is known for
F-BPNS which called on the evening of Monday 17th May, routing from Dublin to London/Gatwick. Production lists show the operator as SFA, is this some form of government department?
June proved a busy month for spotting Nord 262s at Liverpool - indeed the fortunate noted 3 on the ground together here, a unique never to be repeated event. The Armee de l'Air brought
No.107/AX, F-RBAX on the morning of Thursday 10th June, as 'FM0540' from Villacoublay, to Amsterdam. The following Tuesday, 15th June
No.94/MD, F-SDMD from and to Villacoublay as 'F-SDMD'. The Aeronavale visited with
No.65 and
No.73 together. On Saturday 12th June at Liverpool 1056-1205 from Exeter to Edinburgh (No.73 and Glasgow (No.65) . The aircraft reappeared together on Tuesday 15th June here between 1500-1600 routing from Glasgow to Exeter. Confusingly on the flight plans No. 65 was quoted as F-YDAZ on 12th and F-YDAV on 15th, while No.73 was F-YDAX on 12th and F-YDAY on 15th.
1983 (4)
Aeronavale
No.104 called at 1640 on Friday 21st January from Aberdeen, departing the following day at 1555 for Paris/Le Bourget with flight number 'FA017'. Next came an Armee de l'Air example
No.92/AO, F-RBAO on Wednesday 8th June arriving 1035 from Villacoublay - departure details were not recorded by the Tower. Call-sign 'FM0542'. Next came more Aeronavale aircraft.
No.52 Thursday 23rd June as 'FA056' 0910-0945, routing Glasgow to Dublin, while on Wednesday 13th June
No.62, F-YDCY routing Lorient to Kinloss, at Liverpool 0910-0955 for fuel, used the airframe serial as a call-sign.
1984 (2)
Aeronavale
No.71, F-YDAW called on Saturday 16th June between 1505-1610 routing Lorient to Kinloss. In IGF year, there were two French Navy ships in Liverpool Docks at the time, so it is assumed, despite the routing that this was a communications flight. An Armee de l'Air example
No.64/AA (presumably F-RBAA) performed a touch and go on 27 at 0847 on Wednesday 22nd August en route Villacoublay to Amsterdam, calling 'FM0511'.
1985 (6R=)
Another good year for seeing Nord 262s at Liverpool.
No.80/AW, F-RBAW called twice. On Wednesday 27th March the aircraft diverted to Liverpool due to the weather at Hawarden. At Liverpool 0902-1007 as 'FM0541' from Villacoublay to Amsterdam. Later on Monday 18th November the same aircraft as 'FM0521', 1025-1110 from Moret/Episy to Amsterdam.
On Monday 10th June
No.??/AX, F-RDAX (quoted at the time as No.59, so is this an error for Armee de l'Air No.107/AX, F-RBAX, or Aeronavale No.59 call-sign F-YDAX??), called 0918-1018 from Lorient to Edinburgh. However, the real
No.59, F-YDDA of the Aeronavale called on Sunday 30th June 1725-1840 from Brest to Lorient. Aeronavale
No.71 called 0757-0848 as 'FA029' on Saturday 6th July from Lorient to Brest (collecting someone dropped off a week earlier I now wonder?). Armee d l'Air
No.107/AX, F-RBAX called on Thursday 22nd August 1010-1100 as 'FM0540' from Evereux to Amsterdam. Aeronavale
No.28 on Wednesday 13th November performed a touch and go only at 1453 en route Dublin to Northolt as 'FA072'. Aeronavale
No.65 visited at some stage during the year ........................ I'll keep looking for the date!
1986 (2)
Armee de l'Air aircraft performed a touch and go at 1438 on 27 on Friday 30th May, en route Glasgow to Villacoublay. Flight planned as F-RBAW, it is assumed the aircraft was
No.80/AW. On Wednesday 3rd September Aeronavale
No.65, F-YDAA as 'FA029' called 1103-1210 Landivsiau to Lossiemouth, while on Sunday 7th it operated the reverse routing, 1200-1229. A third visit by No.65 brought it back to Liverpool on Thursday 5th December for a touch and go on 27 at 1047 as 'FA071' en route Northolt to Dublin.
1987(2)
On Wednesday 25th February
No.109/AM, F-RBAW called at 0846-0920, from Villacoublay to Amsterdam as 'FM0540'. This was followed on Thursday 2nd April by
No.95/ (code unknown) 1039-1216 as 'FM1500' from Amsterdam to Dublin.
1988(7R)
A record of 7 different Nord 262s passed through Liverpool during 1988, some 20 years after the type first vsit. Most of the aircraft in 1988 were Aeronavale aircraft.
No.65 came first on Thursday 9th June, 1349-1452, from Lorient to Kinloss as 'FAF9022/3', next
No.79 on Wednesday 15th June from Lossiemouth at 2146 to night stop and depart the next day at 0831 for Lorient as 'FAF9029/5', then
No.63 on Saturday 18th June, 0940-1036, from Lorient to Kinloss as 'FAF9028'. On 22nd July
No.71 called twice on 22nd July, between 1103-1152 from Lorient to Stornoway, then later on the reverse routing 1737-1832 as 'FAF9028'. On Wednesday 7th September brought
No.59 1000-1034 from Landivisiau to Lossiemouth as 'FAF0929'. Final Aeronavale aircraft of the year was
No.65 calling for the second time in the year, this time on 7th September from Lossiemouth to Landivisiau, 1459-1525 as 'FAF0928'.
Armee de l'Air aircraft were
No.64/AA, F-RBAA on Wednesday 19th October, 1104-1240, from Birmingham to Amsterdam as 'FM0543'. Also at some stage during the year
No.107/AX visited, but I have to trace a date as yet ...........
1989 (2)
The two Nord 262s that called in 1989 were both airframes not before seen at Liverpool. Armee de l'Air
No.105/AE on Tuesday 31st January as 'FMT0543' called 1111-1237 routing from Brussels to Jersey. The second visitor of the year was within a fortnight later, on Thursday 9th February, Aeronavale
No.79 from Kinloss to Lorient, 1413-1531, calling 'FAF9028'.
Don't worry about missing .......information - I have the information, but need to find it!!
