Attended the Biggin Hill Festival of Flight on the Saturday. Overall a slightly disappointing event with not too much to get over excited about. Lots of the items were things that have been included in the events the last two years - Turbulent & Great War display teams, Little & Large Extra, Muscle Pitts, Wingwalkers, Bronco etc plus the usual stalwarts Reds, BBMF, Sally B. Just the Chinook for current military, no fast jets, no foreign participants. The announced fly past by an RAF Typhoon failed to materialise - didn't hear any announcement why it cancelled.
On the plus side, the centre piece of the event was a Battle of Britain "Hardest Day" reenactment. This offered the chance to see, if I recall correctly, 8 Spitfires, 2 Hurricanes, the Blenheim and a quasi-Me109 (Buchon) in the air at the same time. Quite a few were based/Heritage Hangar items but still I suspect you won't see so many in the air at one time too often. The ground-based pyrotechnics seemed to impress the crowd as well, which seemed larger than previous years.
Perhaps the most interest, certainly among enthusiasts along static line before the display, was the inclusion of Spitfire "TB885". This had flown for the first time after its restoration/rebuild a few days earlier. As well as being included in the reenactment, this was given the honour of closing the show. Unfortunately during the final display it seemed to develop an engine problem - vapour/oil seen as it completed the traditional end of display 'wing-waggle' with a barrel roll. This was accompanied by a somewhat sick sounding circuit back to land. Talking to somebody after the show they said it performed a deadstick landing. Didn't see that myself because of the famous runway 'bump' but it certainly coasted to a halt mid runway with the prop static and had to be recovered by a tow truck. Hopefully any damage wasn't too serious.
I also had a chat with a couple of people from the flying clubs/schools about the stories they had been given notice to quit. They said the media/internet had exaggerated and they weren't going anywhere soon.
I have split the photos on flickr into 2 albums - one for FoF event (Biggin Hill FoF18) and one for bizjets, visitors etc not directly related to the show (Biggin Hill 20180818 (Non-FoF)). For those that are interested there is a review on the airshows.org.uk website with photos that probably put mine to shame.
Here my full log for the day with a few 'teaser' photos after it.
