I'm not sure this is the right section for this thread, (mods please move if required) and this info may exist in the dark recesses of the NWAN forum... However, I'm hoping the knowledgeable members here may be able to help. I'm looking for info on which Luftwaffe units were involved in the bombing of Liverpool and the surrounding area during WW2. Particularly helpful would be the id codes for those units/squadrons e.g. G1+FL Also, if possible details of any aircraft brought down in the greater Merseyside area.
I appreciate any help that can be given. Thank you.

This isn't a particularly helpful reply, but just to say that I've been trying to find the same information for particular air raids near Newcastle in 1941. An extensive trawl of the internet produced nothing that applied, and published books tend to concentrate on the Battle of Britain period but not later.
The only thing I have found that is helpful are reports on individual combats where an enemy aircraft was shot down. These often identify the aircraft ID and unit involved, sometimes with a photo of the downed bomber. There is a good publication for the North East "Northumberland Aviation Diary", which identifies units and aircraft, presumably having obtained the info from official records. But I haven't been researching the Liverpool area so don't know what might be in print, although I have just found a photo of a downed Ju88 in "Action Stations No.3 Military Airfields of Wales and the North-West". The Ju88 was shot down by 312 (Czech) Sqdn Hurricanes from Speke on 8th October 1940, and it belonged to KG 806. The photo of it lying at Bromborough, Wirral shows it has the individial white-outlined letter 'D' but the other three letters can't be made out in the photo. However, entering 'Bromborough' in google brings up many photos and it is identified as M7+DK of 2 Staffel KG 806 a Ju88A-1 wn 4068, the letter 'D' being in red with a white outline.
So that gives you one!

A few years ago I wanted to find information on a raid that caused damage to the Liverpool Hunts Cross suburbs house I was then living in. The Liverpool Reference Library staff were most helpful and we tracked down the date and newspaper coverage - helped by the fact that a local off-duty PC was killed in a house that was destroyed, so the raid merited special attention. However on another occasion I wanted to find a date for photos I have of a school in Central Liverpool burnt out in a raid, but failed in the Library indexes and references - I imagine likely because it may have been hit during one of the major raids so was not worthy of mention being (at night) an empty building. Although apparently requiring much patience to work through, the Civil Defence records can provide detail of raid damage, aircraft shot down etc. - not a source I have used though. There used to be an excellently researched site detailing North West England wartime aircraft crashes. The Liverpool List of allied aircraft is on: www.south-lancs-aviation.bravepages.com/Speke%20Incidents.htmHowever when I've just tried this link, after a long while just a basic list appeared, and appears to be just one page of a now withdrawn website.

Are there any societies in Germany that would have better records? As people have said the units taking part are rarely listed....google bromborough Ju88 for details of that unit involved ....

Many thanks everyone for your help and suggestions, it's all been very useful (especially the info on the Bromborough Ju88). Cheers! Edit Jan 30th, if anyone's following this thread, I've since found this smashing little on-line publication. Brilliant! issuu.com/newferryonline/docs/bromborough_dock_ju88_incident

My grandad was the first person on the scene of the Brombough crash site as he was on duty at the gate for levers (Richard (Harry) Gill) and I still have some artefacts from it ie the binoculars and somewhere some photos of it,there's also some parts at perch rock museum if it's still open. We met the pilots who survived the crash many years later and said how kind my grandad was making them a cup of tea while they were waiting for the military to arrive to arrest them he commented that wouldn't have happened in Germany Richard

Received this by e-mail from George Jones, two non-Internet sources which could help "Voodoo101" take his research further:
That cast my eyes towards my own bookshelves, and a quick thumb through Volumes 2 and 3 of 'Wings Across the Border - a History of Aviation in North Wales and the Northern Marches' Derick Pratt & Mike Grant, Bridge Books, find a couple of pages in both with detail descriptions of downed German aircraft, many with side code and unit details reearched, indeed a couple of photos too. A brief read finds many of these aircraft downed over Wales were on their way to/from Liverpool raids. If "Voodoo101" can contact me by PM with his e-mail, I'll scan the relevant pages if he feels they would be useful.

A further list of references from George Jones provided via an e-mail so copied and pasted here, which are likely to be of interest to "Voodoo 101":
George also mentions that as of yesterday afternoon the Llangollen Railway suspended operations through to end of April following the example of others,

Thanks everyone again for all your suggestions, links and recommendadtions. It became clear early on in my investigations that Ju88A-1 M7+DK was the aircraft that I was looking for. Funny that until I posted my original request I'd not heard of the incident or knew of the items at Fort Perch Rock. That bears a future visit... As an aside, I'm now in communication with the gentleman that was responsible for the document on issuu.com, he tells me that he has gathered more information and photos since the original document was made available. Cheers everyone!
