INTRODUCTION TO THE LATE 'FIFTIES SPEKE AIRPORT, VISITING AIRCRAFT LOGS.
This post introduces final three years of Speke Airport movement highlights for the 1950s decade - a personal selection compiled during late. Clearly the criteria for selection varies over the decade, possibly in part due to what information was available. Regular scheduled airline activity has been totally ignored throughout, charter flights at times recorded, as are visiting GA singles and twins, but at other times seemingly completely ignored. Based aircraft are occasionally covered, but some not at all.
What we have though is a fascinating window into what visited Speke Airport during the first half of the 50s decade. Certainly far fewer aircraft than there are around today, but a very much greater variety of types, especially of airliners and military aircraft.
From the start of 1957, for the final years of the 50s decade, the record is of most, if not all visiting aircraft including some that repeat a number of times during the year. However there is still no attempt to record resident aircraft or the regular scheduled airliners until 1959. In 1959 an attempt was made at the start of the year to include first visit of the year for BEA and Aer Lingus aircraft, although this petered out after a few months. Interestingly in the middle of 1958 not only were times recorded for some visiting aircraft, but also the regular daily Mosquitos of the Woodvale based Thum flight. However this imitative too petered out after a few months. 1957 onwards will each have their own thread.
Right through 1950-1959, the Logs record registration and sometimes point of origin/departure to (as 4 letter codes), along with occasional comment. Initially only very, very rarely was the aircraft type ever recorded for 'common' aircraft. The notes were written in fountain pen, frequently in tiny writing with a rather personalised way of forming letters, so even with use of a magnifying glass many registration and airfield codes are far from certain, especially in the earlier years. As a result there could be occasional transcription errors to add to the errors transcribing the original from earlier or official records. Aircraft types are all cross-checked with modern sources (paper and/or www), however aircraft modified during their lifetime present a problem eg mark of Dove, or Austers converted eg J/1 Autocrat to J/1N Alpha etc. Early DH.89s may appear as DH.89A Dragon Rapides in confusion with later ones. Further confusion is the change from using Roman numerals to numbers by the military, Harvard II and Harvard T.2 also Proctor IV and Proctor 4 are just two examples. Generally Dakotas are DC-3, C-47, C-47A or C-47B - the Dakota 3, 4 or 6 mark is sometimes used, but often ignored as a number of C-47B Dakota 4s became Dakota 6s for a while. There could well be types appearing in these 1950s lists which are unfamiliar, let google and/or Wikipedia be your friend.
Cross checking the Sabres, Vampire NF.10s and T-33As (1953-1957) with other sources (mainly Alan Schoefield in 'Rapide' magazine) proved to be such a nightmare, that I ceased trying! There are countless recording and transcription errors that are impossible to eradicate! Until the end of March 1959 the airfield codes used a system, whereby many airfields had very similar looking letter-groups eg GJBA Ringway, GJBH Barton, GJCA Squires Gate, GJEA Speke, GJFA Ronaldsway, GJHA Nutts Corner. With the compiler of the original record (Phil Butler) writing capital A and D, H and N, J and U, B and G, O and C, J and S in a similar form, there is plenty of scope for miss-interpretation, while I've tried hard, I'm fairly sure a few a registrations and certainly a number of airfields could have been miss-interpreted after 65+ years. Although a good list of British airfield codes came with the note-book Logs, there was no decode for the European ones - where I have not been able to decode a code, I've recorded it, should I ever find a decode list to translate them in the future.
From the end of 1956, the MGAE local enthusiast's magazine 'Northern Aeronews' (later the MSAE 'Flypast') recorded in print a selection of the best movements each month. This has added extra information and confirmation as to why aircraft visited and changes to residents and based airliners. It also provides a welcome cross-check between registration, types and operators for the more noteable movements.
As I don't have the detail, in terms of timetables etc, the 'Annual Report' to each year is brief and lacks a list of aircraft visiting, airlines etc.
Resident aircraft are rarely included in the Logs, however enough is known from other sources to be able to put together a reasonable list. A complete 'annual review' of visiting aircraft is now becoming practical as annual cross-reference lists were compiled from 1957 for visiting aircraft, so will be included to give a more complete picture of activity in the style of the 1960s annual reports and appendices.
VISITING AIRCRAFT LOGS
1957 - AN INTRODUCTION
1957 - AN INTRODUCTION
AIRLINE ACTIVITY
B.E.A. for the second half of the 50s decade the Irish Sea operations operated with little change, the network featuring Manchester, Liverpool, Isle of Man and Belfast being operated by their Douglas C-47 Dakota fleet. In December a couple of Viscount diverted into Speke due to poor weather elsewhere.
Aer Lingus continued to operate their Douglas C-47 Dakotas on the Dublin service throughout 1957. The Visiting Aircraft Logs do show that in February, June and December a Viscount 700 operated through Liverpool, mostly due to weather diversion.
Starways The pattern of operations in 1957 continued very much as that for 1956, with the scheduled service to London and summer I/Ts flown from Liverpool and Glasgow by Dakota aircraft. During December a DC-4 Skymaster aircraft was acquired, entering service in January 1958. Also during December a C-47 Dakota was leased out for the winter to Air Jordan.
Cambrian Airways during 1957 operated 3 DH Herons and 2 C-47 Dakotas. All 5 operating on Liverpool schedules to Cardiff and the Channel Islands.
Federated Air Transport during 1957 operated a pair of Ansons and a pair of Dragon Rapides throughout the year mainly bringing fresh vegetables and fruit to the UK from Ireland, but also available for passenger or small freight charter work.
AERO CLUB ACTIVITY
The Merseyside and North Wales Flying Club started the year with three Austers, a Taylorcraft Plus D and a Tiger Moth. Many of the contracts that had sustained the Wright Aviation and Dragon Airways operated aero clubs - RAF flying scholarships, TA anti-aircraft co-operation flights and to a degree pleasure flying had by now ceased. The club’s emphasis was on private pilot training and leisure flying. June was an eventful month, taking delivery of a Proctor, while the Taylorcraft was written off in a crash just inside the aerodrome boundary following engine failure on take-off. In September a further Tiger Moth was acquired, this one being unusual that it was a Coupe, with a glassed over cockpit.
OTHER BASED AIRCRAFT
During 1957 three aircraft were brought to Speke Airport to be based, but not directly linked to the Aero Club. Both W.T.Clarke in 2/57 and Eric Bemrose in 8/57 acquired Auster aircraft, while in 9/57 Lord Derby and the Stanley Estate acquired the first Piper Apache to be registered in Britain. Aircraft sales and importers, Aircraft Associates based their Beech Bonanza here from 10/56, although it also spent time at Dublin.
AIRWORK LTD
By the end of the year, few aircraft remained at Speke with contracts now completed and despite great effort, with no new contracts forthcoming much of the Liverpool workforce was laid off. However work did continue on the Sabres with most of the stock of aircraft leaving during the year.
A trickle of other work did arrive. The first of 7 DH Doves of Iraq Petroleum for overhaul arrived during December 1956, with the final one departing end of December 1957. Two former R.A.F. Dakotas arrived in September 1957 to be civilianised for Sudan Airlines. 3 Bristol Freighters arrived for storage, the first in December ’56, the other 2 in January and February 1957; two departing in April and the final one in May 1957.
THUM FLIGHT EXCHANGE THEIR SPITFIRES FOR MOSQUITOS
The RAF Woodvale THum Flight exchanged their remaining 3 Spitfire PR.19s (the last operating in RAF markings) for DH.98 Mosquito TT.35 aircraft. The final Spitfire sortie took place on 10thJune 1957.
MAIN RUNWAY 08/26 RELAID
Completion of the project to re-lay the whole 5,127ft of main runway 08/26 enabled the Airport to handle larger aircraft. The number of Skymaster and Viscount visits increased dramatically in 1957 and even more so in 1958 as a direct result. While Skymasters and a Constellation had visited in the late 1940s, visits were strongly discouraged, indeed effectively banned, during much of the 1950s. While a Viscount had been accepted on diversion in 1955, the next also on diversion was not until very late in 1956; before a series of charter flights in September 1957 once the runway work was complete. Other types now able to visit before the end of the 50s were the Argonaut, Hermes and L-749 Constellation, and followed in 1960 by the Ambassador and Douglas DC-6B.
TERMINAL BUILDING ALTERATIONS, WINTER 1957/58.
The East Wing of the terminal, which pre-war on construction had been intended for use as a hotel, was re-modelled to provide more ground floor passenger and handling space.
EVENTS AND TYPES TO LOOK FOR:
Grand National was held on 30th April – a rather disappointing list of aircraft visitors for that day though, although the day before was a little better. The 2nd British F1 Grand Prix was held at Aintree on 20th July, although little special was to be seen at the airport.
Look out for charter using Dakotas and Viking aircraft. Why 10 Fred Olsen Dakota charters were required within a week during April was not recorded, just that the flights operated. Note the German registered Viking in August and US Skymasters in February and May. Also of note the Philips’s Beech 18 in July, Sudanese Dove in September and Aerovan in June and October. ‘Our’ Prince G-AMLZ, now preserved outside the former terminal building visited during March. During 1957 there were a number of ‘first visit by type’ which include a Piper Tri-Pacer in February and a Piper Apache in March. Many may need to look-up what a Globe Swift (in June) looked like.
A great number of military aircraft called, look for Meteors, Vikings, Varsity, Canberra (November), Dakotas, Avro C.19s, Spitfires and Mosquitos. To me the greatest surprise is that the RAF still had a Domine (Dragon Rapide) in use in June.
ISSUES WITH THE ANNUAL LOG FOR 1957.
Although many more visiting aircraft feature in the 1957 visiting aircraft log, it is still not a complete list of every aircraft that visited, or every time a particular visitor called. I have two different versions of the end of year record of aircraft visiting. One from Phil Butler’s log, transcribed from ATC Tower records of ‘highlights’ (the basis of the annual log below), the other compiled to record every aircraft that either landed or took off from Liverpool/Speke during the year and is used in one of summary lists at the end. There are differences.
Seems all the RCAF/RAF Sabres processed at Speke were Sabre 2 or 4, however small differences eg to gun sight and heating ducts were all that differentiated the RAF Sabre 4s into Sabre F.1 and Sabre F.4.
Some types not always pin-pint accurate eg Auster J/1 Autocrat many converted to Auster J/1N Alpha by time of visit. Many Doves converted in service, so too Vikings - so mark may well be different at time of visit.
Used the abbreviation MTCA - Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation throughout the 1950s decade. Also can be referred to as Ministry of Civil Aviation (MCA), then the Ministry of Aviation (MoA), and later as Board of Trade (BoT). Unsure too, when the operation of their aircraft became the Civil Aviation Flying Unit (CAFU).
