Hi, Had a walk to see the helicopters last night. We parked near The Village Store in Hightown, but there was spaces on Thistledown Drive (this is a new road so doesn’t appear on some maps). We just followed the path that runs alongside the railway. Lots of warning signs along this path once you get parallel with the camp Altcar Training Camp, Formby by ian531531, on Flickr First to be seen where the Wildcats, one with its engine running The first Wildcat looked great hiding in the woods ZZ534 Agusta AW159 Wildcat, Royal Navy by ian531531, on Flickr ZZ534 Agusta AW159 Wildcat, Royal Navy by ian531531, on Flickr ZZ397 Agusta AW159 Wildcat, Royal Navy by ian531531, on Flickr The Merlins and Chinooks could be heard as we headed down the path, just as we were getting to the bridge they all decided to take off, We were 2 minutes too late! Looked like a flight of 1 Wildcat, 2 Chinooks and 2 Merlins So just a couple of snatched shots in the evening light B-V Chinook HC5, Royal Air Force by ian531531, on Flickr EHI-101 Merlin, Royal Navy by ian531531, on Flickr The question is, did a Merlin stay on the ground or had it already departed by then, can anyone help? The walk to the bridge over the River Alt takes about 25 minutes, but it’s worth it. You do pass over a smaller bridge before you get to the bigger bridge over the river River Alt by ian531531, on Flickr On the way back some nice wildlife and a fuel delivery for the helicopters Dead tree by ian531531, on Flickr Gatekeeper Butterfly by ian531531, on Flickr Crow by ian531531, on Flickr Royal Air Force, Oshkosh tanker by ian531531, on Flickr If you’ve not been before, like me, it’s worth making the effort Ian
