Hi
I am after some help and support regarding the best cameras and lens for taking photos of aircraft. I am in awe sometimes of some of the high quality shots of aircraft out of Liverpool and Manchester airports - keep up the good work.!
I have just sold my Canon 500d SLR and am looking for some advice on what to get next. My price range is 500-700 pounds on a camera.
Many thanks
Carl

Hi Carl,
Are you staying with Canon or looking at another manufacturer?
I have the Canon EOS 1200D which is an entry level camera but I have never had an issue with it. However, my main camera is the Canon EOS 77D which is very capable, has good optics and plenty of features. I have used it for the last couple of years and would recommend.
Just take your time deciding and don't rush.
Chris

I am a user of a Canon 500D and have got quite fond the Canon as a make. I am currently not always happy with the image sharpness, but feel that is an issue with my Cannon 100-400 Mk.1 zoom autofocus rather than with the camera body. Canon or Nikon does seem to hinge on what your previous camera was and continuation of lens mount. Is there at present much of a difference in value for money between the two manufacturers in terms of body and lenses at present?
Tell me, is there actually any logic to the Canon Camera numbering system or is it totally random? Is there any way of knowing from the model number how capable the body is, or is price the only way of initially assessing the position in rank of body performance, build, features and quality?
It is my opinion, csnewton, that the lens(es) chosen are actually more important than the body for sharp images at maximium focal length photography - which is what much aviation photography amounts to.
No help towards your decision, but might stir up some interesting opinions, as I need a new body and lenses, the question being how much of a bank loan will I need to get something to match the sharpness of philglt, Beemer and others. Suspect a great deal more than your stated budget, although I take it that you are looking for a body only.

Viscount, I agree the lens is far more important the big question is it worth upgrading the lens first? I guess it all about what you have now compared to what your end goal.
I took a bit of a punt before I bought my 77D and bought a sigma 150-500mm lens off Ebay. It was used and at a price of £350 I couldn't resist. I got what I think are great results with the 1200D.
A bit off camera body subject but I have heard of a shop lending lenses not sure on cost but it might be worth considering?

The 100-400mm L series USM lens was and still is a bread and butter bit of glass for paps and is a corker for aviation photography, image stabiliser and superb sharpness. MPB will probably have a few used ones.

It's what feels good in your hands I have had both canon and Nikon but much prefer the feeling of the canon in my hand I have a 5d mk3 with 100/400 lens it's a bit heavy to start with but I soon got use to it I would personally go to a shop and ask to look at them and feel the weight and comfort in your hand and go from there each person has a favourite for different reasons a bit like favourite music or tv programs everyone is different

I have a Canon 800D, it's my second Canon DSLR. As has been said above,it's how the camera "feels" in your hand. I've now bought a battery grip for mine, so I'm able to have two batteries so therefore, (hopefully), twice the length of time before I need to replace the batteries. I did have the Sigma 150-500mm lens, but swapped over to the Canon 100-400 Mk2 and it's a lovely lens, with nice crisp glass, and I've been very pleased with my images.
There are companies who will rent gear out, so maybe thats worth having a look at to see how you feel with either Canon or Nikon, or pop into the camera shop in town and have a look/chat in there and see what can be done on your budget......always check the internet too in case it can be bought cheaper elsewhere. I think Canon are doing one of their "cashback" options at the moment but not sure on what equipment, but I got a £600 cashback when I bought my 100-400 lens!! :-)
All thats really missing at the moment are trips to be able to actually USE the camera!!!!!!

Thank you very much for the advice.
I opted for the Canon 250d and will hope to get a better lens.
Here's to some busier action in the skies soon...
Stay safe and thank you
