Hi,
Been doing a bit of loft clearing and came across six volumes of "British Aviation Review" which for those that have not heard of it was the mag of British Aviation Research Group.
These are from 1977 to 1982. No when you consider we have just Mildenhall left , for those younger members who never had chance to visit proper USAF base this is typically what could have been seen.So for eg 2/11/1977 at Alconbury visitors were 2 WGAF F-104G, Five Canadian CF-104D. The next day 2 WGAF F-4F On 15/11/77 5 4sqdn Harriers visited. 2 WGN F-104G. 2 OV-1D. As you go through the month visitors were from Zweibrucken, Bitburg, Hahn, Spangdahlem Ramstein and Soesterburg.
Then lists for Lakenheath, Mildenhall, Upper Heyford and Woodbridge.
Another section lists Manufacturers. Remember these?? BAC, Faire Britten Norman, Hawker-Siddeley, Scottish Aviation, and Westlands,
Aaaah those were the days.
These volumes of BAR are not wanted and are up for disposal. Any body want them, all it involves is a trip to Hale to collect them!!

Only RAF Mildenhall left? RAF Lakenheath? RAF Fairford?
Whilst little of real interest there are U2s, B-52s, F-16s, and F35s of the USAF/USN here at the moment - probably more visiting aircraft than the RAF can field in a day.

Yesterday a B-52 flew over the house, having taken off from Mildenhall. The Ospreys are active, too. Each day this week, one or two B-52s have flown over the house each day out of Fairford. Although there is no flying now, the USAF still has a substantial base at Alconbury. An American couple, who live in the next village to me, work there. I've seen C-130s regularly pass over from Lakenheath especially in the past few weeks.

RAF Alconbury as it now exists has no runways the second WW2 watch office was on that area but was demolished a few years ago (first one is on the original site and is listed...recently restored too) after being used by the base fire office for a while. Runways and WW2/Cold-war era airfield are on the separate site being developed as a business area - owners are quite 'pro-heritage' and have allowed thorough documentary recording of the buildings before removal - Airfield Research Group has it's 'archive' there and there is also a museum supported by ARG and the base (though that might not be open due to SAR-COV19 concerns).

The one I saw yesterday showed it as coming out of Mildenhall, unless this was an aberration on ADSB - the coverage in these parts is not great. It was quite low < FL 100. It may have called there for some other reason. For what it's worth, it made so much noise that the FB page for my local town was inundated with requests as to what was going on. We see (and hear) a lot of military activity around here, so people are used to it, but yesterday's was unusual. Two went overhead about five minutes ago, definitely heading for Fairford. I believe they are doing some exercises quite close to southern Russia and there is video of them on the net being buzzed by two Su 27s. www.facebook.com/AmericanTelevision.News/videos/680849252514782Good news on Alconbury. The couple I know work in logistics and stores and were posted there from Guantanamo(!) I gather some B2s have been deployed to Diego Garcia, so the USAF are busy at the moment.

The one I saw yesterday showed it as coming out of Mildenhall, unless this was an aberration on ADSB I wouldn't be inclined to trust toy radar and especially so with aircraft that are known to use ads-b only rarely (two of the three today had theirs on for their whole sortie which took them over Poland and the Ukraine). If any of the hobby systems is to be used I'd suggest PlanePlotter as that is the only one which actually requiress those who upload data have precise station position so can do accurate multilateration (it can also do multilateration on Mode-A/C which none of the others can do).
