This has just popped up on the net after news that flybe are to place an initial order for 35 Embraer E-175's with an option to but another 105 aircraft. Reading this it looks like LPL have recently staged the meeting with flybe with regards to opening up routes exLPL.. www.liverpooldailypost.co.uk/ldpbusiness/business-local/2010/07/20/flybe-aircraft-deal-could-lead-to-expansion-at-liverpool-john-lennon-airport-92534-26889488/FLYBE could make a serious return to Liverpool JLA after today announcing the purchase of 35 new Embraer aircraft and options on a further 105 more.
The deal could be = worth a total of £3.3bn.
Flybe operated six routes from Liverpool but pulled out in 2005 and only flies an Isle of Man link now.
However, spokesman Mike Rutter said the new aircraft, due to arrive next year, lend themselves to European business city routes and talks have already taken place with previous JLA owner Peel and the new majority shareholder Vancouver Airport Services.

Plenty of scope for unserved destinations from Liverpool including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, London, Newquay, Basel, Brussels, Budapest, Cologne, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Munich, Prague, Valencia and Zurich to name just a few.

Also with the flybe's tie up with Air France CDG would be a link that will generate traffic given EZY's cut back on the route probably due to its lack of crews.

I think the operative word there is 'could'. Surely this order is just to replace the quirky (ageing - in terms of hours and landings, difficult to balance and heavy on maintenance), Dash 8s? They could operate a service to Paris if they're getting into bed with AF, but this would dilute the KL revenue on the AMS service, so I'd be surprised if that happened.

Cologne would be welcomed in the NW if it ever materialised as it served with EZY as a stop for lots of Military serving in Germany who live or have family in North West UK.

No Airline operates to Southern Italy from the North West. Routes to Bari and Brindisi could be viable.

Surely this order is just to replace the quirky (ageing - in terms of hours and landings, difficult to balance and heavy on maintenance), Dash 8s? Flybe say its to enable growth into Europe. Jim French CBE, Flybe Chairman and Chief Executive said: “Flybe is delighted to announce this significant $1.3 billion order of 35 Embraer 175 aircraft. In doing so, we are securing an aircraft that fits with our stated aim of furthering our position as the leading regional airline in Europe.
“The 175 will allow us to preserve our two fleet strategy and the economic and environmental performance of the aircraft is in line with Flybe’s policy of only buying A and B rated eco-label aircraft as part of its commitment to invest in lower emission new technology aircraft.”
Mr. French continued: “The 175 will give Flybe significant added capacity and is particularly suited to the sector lengths prevalent in Europe that we are most interested in exploiting. In short, it perfectly fits the Flybe business model and we are delighted to be extending our long-running partnership with Embraer."

I seem to recall Jim French making very similar statements when announcing the large order for Dash 8Q-400's a few years back. Indeed if type specific references are removed, that statement would be about purchasing Dash 8s rather than Embraers!
Garstonboy's comments relate to an industry earned reputation of the Dash 8 has having a number of drawbacks once in service. The Embraers are only slightly larger than the Dash 8Q-400 and can be viewed as a natural replacement, particularly on Flybe's longer Dash 8 routes. I'd be mighty suprised if, when the ERJ-170s start arriving, Dash 8Q-400s don't start leaving the fleet, albeit in lower numbers. Flybe currently have circa 48 Dash 8Q-400s and 8 more on order. Certainly the ERJ family of airliners have a much more 'airliner' shape in the perception of the general public than the tube with big tail and paddle propellors Dash 8. As Flybe already operate the larger ERJ-195s, I'm a little suprised that they are not adding a few to this fleet as part of the purchase of the slightly smaller ERJ-175.

There is a change within 24 hours of the aircraft order announcement.
The airline will receive its first E-175 around six months earlier than yesterdays news of September 2011.
The airline will start it on the Guernsey/Gatwick route.

With Ryanair just announcing that it is stopping all services at Belfast City as of 31 October...is there a chance that flyBe might have another look at LPL-BHD or will easy get the Liverpool-Belfast route back to themselves?

This is excellent news. I've often wondered about Flybe's commitment to Liverpool, but this shows that they are happy to invest in routes and have stepped in to continue the link with BHD

Usually I am the world's super-optimist but when it comes to Liverpool and Flybe I always have that dreadful feeling in the pit of my stomach which says that as soon as Flybe find an excuse they will export the services to Manchester. Time will tell if I am wrong. I hope I am proved incorrect and this is just the start of an expansion programme by Flybe from Liverpool.
