IWM DUXFORD - AMERICAN FLYING DAY - SATURDAY 23rd JULY 2022
These initial posts will focus on just the air display and all other aircraft outside at Duxford. Once sorted, further posts will cover some of the aircraft inside in the on-site museums and those airworthy or under restoration to fly exhibited indoors.
The flying day was a sell-out, and the weather on the day clear with some high cloud, warm and with a gentle breeze creating slightly cross-wind conditions. Used to pre-covid massive crowds at the popular 'Warbirds' event, found this flying day to be a much more comfortable experience. The limit on the number of tickets created a crowd line that had plenty of spaces to move into with a camera for 'opportunity' shots, many of the family groups sitting further back on rugs on the very dry flat grass. The actual display lasted for just a little over 2 hours, incorporating solos, duos and mixed aircraft formations, most illustrated further down this thread. Some interesting cameos, the only disappointment being the F-15E Eagle that arrived unexpectedly and performed a single curving, climbing pass before heading home - a rather disappointing, indeed pointless display appearance!
The log covers all the aircraft on the 'flight-line' and then the civil aircraft present - some resident, a few day-visitors. Apart from the civil aircraft collection,
there were few aircraft outside but within the crowd area.
