The airport failed to renew the license so the frequency was allocated elsewhere (from what we could gather by the random transmissions, a ground handler at Manchester airport). This was only discovered after complaints of interference from the ATCOs. After some necessary upgrading to the equipment, a new frequency was allocated to Liverpool. So there you go, they are different because they've recently been changed. Simples (again).

I dont know how far you are from LJLA? but have a look at maplins they stock a high gain ant for hand opperatred scanners it will increase recep by 40-50% i can recive LJLA at 8 miles with one, I live in woolton and can recieve Manchester ground from there I'm near Aintree, so probably about 10 (ish...) miles as the crow ( or an airplane ..) flies. I've got a slightly better than stock antenna on the hand scanner already, and also bought a discone & cabling last year , but aside from setting it up for a few days in the spare room, haven't had much chance to do any comparisons , need to get it mounted somewhere (or just clear some space in the spare room to leave it up!). Sometimes I do get the tower, but more often than not it's only the aircraft side of the conversation, but that's what I'd expect given my location. I'll take a look on Maplin's site anyway to see if the antenna's better than the one I've got now. thanks
