ADVANCE INFO The annual pilgrimage to Lourdes is due to be flown this year by an Alba Star Boeing 737-400.
The aircraft is due to ferry in from Palma at 0730. It will return later in the day for a second flight.
Currently, their only passenger aircraft is EC-LAV, that started life as TF-FIA.
The returns are due on the 29th July.

Tony, Thanks for that info- also another heads up, which may produce an interesting visitor. Everton have a friendly against Villareal at Goodison on Friday 5th August 2011. So the Spaniards may come in on a charter of some kind. Happy days Bob

Interesting. When I used to live in LPL, charters to Lourdes were a common event throughout the whole summer, there was at least one per week as far as I recall. They were usually run by Cathedral Travel (which was owned by the same people as Starways) but the charters continued long after Starway's demise. Are they just a once a year event now?

The Archdiocese of Liverpool hold their annual pilgrimage once a year and normally they use LPL for this with the majority of the sick going by air. (There are a lot who go overland) Other diocese i.e Newcastle and Shrewsbury have used LPL but they are few these days probably due to the cost. We did lose out a few years ago when they used MAN for their pilgrimage but they soon came back to us as they received a much better service and more help at LPL. FoLA provide a lot of Wheel-chair pushers and help throughout the terminal to make it a much more pleasant journey, supplementing the help the permanent staff provide.

In addition to the Archdiocese arranged pilgrimage, there were commercial tours too. If memory serves correctly Tangey (Tagnay?) Tours were one such company with a couple of charters a year from both Manchester and Liverpool at least.
In my youth it seemed that every Roman Catholic 'over a certain age' pilgrimaged to Lourdes, now it is no longer on the agenda as a religious "must do", even for those with a belief. Even the number of coach tours for Lourdes seems much reduced.

I have a friend who is involved in the Lourdes pilgrimage and he has been full of praise for FOLA and the help they provide. But I think some flights go from Manchester because the airbridges are quicker for the wheelchairs.

Most of the dioceses use Mancunia Travel as the organising agent and they use Manchester airport.
